Amy This product is great for blemishes, bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes, burns, and rashes, to name but a few. It takes the sting out, and helps reduce the instance of scarring from almost any injury to the skin. WOW! N. Bradcoe Dear Sirs, I have received the items indeed - and I thank you very much for the kind and speedy service. I'll be sure to pass on the word to my friends. Best regards, Lena Olin While Sassafras has been used for hundreds of years in folk medicine, it has some potential side effects which should be noted even though the amount of Sassafras oil added to each Zam-Buk tin is very small; each 100 grams of Zam-Buk contains 0.62 grams (0.021 oz) of Sassafras Oil. Side effect symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, hallucinations, low blood pressure, and shallow or rapid breathing.

Finally found a source for Zambuk that we used any years ago in NZ. Great service and product is just like we remembered and in a tin too. B. S. Today, Zam-Buk is most frequently used in South Africa to relieve itching and pain. Zam-Buk Ointment Uses

Zambuk Ointment contains active ingredients such as eucalyptus oil and camphor to provide temporary itch relief. In the early 20th century, it was reported that the formulation comprised 66% paraffin wax, 20% pale resin ( colophony), and 14% eucalyptus oil, with small amounts of other ingredients. [2] More recently, the composition eucalyptus oil, 1.8% camphor, 0.5% thyme oil, and 0.65% sassafras oil. The English and Thai varieties do not contain sassafras oil. [6] A 1908 report published in The British Medical Journal estimated that the cost of ingredients for a standard 0.6-ounce (17g) box was one farthing, yet its retail price was 1 s 1½ d. Brian Vibert Zam-Buk Ointment is use to relieve the itchiness caused by insect bites and is not intended for use as a mosquito repellent.Zam-Buk Ointment contains active ingredients such as eucalyptus oil and camphor, that provides effective relief of pain and itch associated with minor wounds, burns, scalds, chapped hands, mosquitoes and insect bites. Use of sassafras oil is also associated with liver damage. Finally, there's concern that consumption of sassafras during pregnancy can result in miscarriage. Zam-Buk has been used by my family since 1968. It helps to heal faster than most other medicated ointments, it reduces the chance of scaring from cuts and burns and seems to take the sting out of abrasions. It is also helpful in reducing the discolouration caused by bruising. It has countless uses and all of them are effective. N. E. Bradcoe

Zam-Buk is a popular and inexpensive herbal ointment found in most medicine cabinets in South Africa for over 100 years. This is an excellent product. It has exceptional healing qualities. My parents used it on cuts and scrapes when I was a child. I have even used it on bad insect bites on my dog, and the healing time has been amazing. Morag Mathers The source of the name is uncertain, but a link to South Africa has been suggested. It remains very widely popular in South Africa. [3] The brand name was at one time used to refer to ambulance-men and first aiders at rugby league matches in Australia and New Zealand. [4]

The product itself was an important first-aid medicine for any cuts or abrasions of the skin. In a time long before anti-biotics, a footballer could come to permanent grief merely from scraping his knee on the ground and it becoming infected. Zam-Buk was a recognised treatment that could successfully kill germs that had entered the skin. Many of the Zam-Buk adverts used headlines such as "Do you realise the danger of a poisoned finger? Death often lurks in a cut." ¹ Camphor is a terpene (an organic compound) that is frequently used in vapor rubs and herbal salves to relieve pain and reduce itching. Camphor seems to increase blood flow to the area and stimulates nerve ending when applied topically. It also treats toenail fungus, warts, cold sores, hemorrhoids, first degree burns, and osteoarthritis. Zam-Buk was advertised throughout the early to mid part of the 20th century to be effective for a wide range of ailments, including cuts, bruises, dry and rough hands, elbows and feet, sprains, stomach ulcers, hemorrhoids (piles), colds, toothaches, and muscle pain and stiffness. There is no other product like Zam-Buk on the market that I am aware of. It is one amazing product. I have been using it for as long as I can remember. Gerald Kole

The exact source of the name is unknown but the word zambuk once commonly referred to ambulance-men and first aiders at rugby league matches in Australia and New Zealand. The 'zambuk' would race across the pitch to help an injured player. The name was eventually replaced in the 1970s, with 'trainers' and 'runners'. ¹ There are several formulas for Zam-Buk but they all contain camphor, eucalyptus oil and thyme oil all of which are somewhat antimicrobial and both camphor and eucalyptus have analgesic properties. Widely used in earlier times as an all-round antiseptic and healing ointment, particularly with rugby players worldwide.
