About this deal

Some Witches like to change their altar cloth according to the type of ritual they are doing, or following the Wheel of the Year, having a different one for each season and each Pagan holiday. If you’re on a budget, simply use any piece of cloth that you have at home. A kitchen or dining room altar could be an option, but only if you think the energy or vibe of the room connects well with your practice.

Even though there are only four cardinal directions, you’d be surprised at how many different opinions there are about what direction your altar should face. Speaking of vibe–I’ve never seen a bathroom altar for this very reason. But hey, if it works for you…

The Importance of a Wiccan Altar

Symbols and objects that reflect your practice such as images or items to represent deities, ancestors or the elements Halloween is right around the corner, but that’s not the only reason witches seem to be everywhere as of late. Increasingly, they’ve been popping up all over the place, from pop culture—see: Luca Guadagnino’s remake of the horror film Suspiria, Netflix’s remake of Sabrina the Teenage Witch—to the runways of Fashion Week (Celine and Burberry were just two of the seemingly dozens of brands that served up witchy vibes this past season alone). There are, of course, deeper things at play: Witchcraft and covens have also proven to be a source of solace and solidarity for some in the #MeToo era, following an increasing association between witches and feminism. Add a cloth, tray or plate to your altar for decoration and to protect the surface from candle wax and water spills. Okay, let's set up a simple, small altar that you can use for an everyday practice, like morning meditation or intention setting, or an evening gratitude shrine. We'll get into some more specifics about these daily practices later on. Making a Basic Altar:

A Wiccan altar is just one aspect of this religion–there’s plenty more to be learned! If you’d like to know more about Wicca, I’ve got some suggestions for further reading. The Wiccan Bible for the Solitary Witch Chalice: you use this to hold a ceremonial drink or to offer libations. It is a feminine tool, so place it near the element of water. East is another option, as it is the direction of the rising sun. This is a practice that’s found not only in witchcraft, but other world religions as well. Facing the rising sun can bring an energy of newness and life into your practice. There are eight Wiccan holidays, known as Sabbats, that celebrate the cycles and seasons of nature. These include the four seasons (Winter, Spring, Autumn & Summer), the mating habits of animals and the reaping and sowing of crops. Based on the Sabbat, the altar is decorated accordingly. For example, the Summer Solstice altar cloth should be white and the altar decorated with Summer flowers, fruits and anything else that symbolizes Summer. [2] This goes for each Sabbat. Certain Wiccan traditions may have different colors but universally, the altar is usually decorated to represent the time of year.

What is a witch altar?

Crystals are a beautiful way to decorate your witch altar and incorporate the element of air. They’re extremely versatile and can be used in moon rituals, spellwork, and baths. Hold them in your hand while meditating, or lie down and place them on your forehead or at your heart center while visualizing your wildest dreams. I can provide you with all the puzzle pieces, but it’s up to you to put them all together. There are so many different types of Wiccan altars, and I’m excited to see what you come up with!

The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home. We use this space multiple times a day for nourishment and comfort. What we put into our bodies in the form of food has a profound effect on how well we function in the world. So imbuing our food with healthy, clean, soothing energies is the kitchen witches' specialty. But these altars are often stealth. The candle in the middle of the table? Yes, lighting that may be all it takes to gather the energies and give gratitude to the nourishing animals, vegetables, herbs and minerals that made your meal the magical elixer of health that it is. Around that altar may be a vase of flowers, a pitcher of water or juice, a salt and pepper shaker . . . all seemingly mundane objects, but for the energies and intentions that you give them. In this article, we’re going to break down everything you could possibly need to know about how to set up and how to use a Wiccan altar. From the purposes it serves to how to make it look beautiful and work great–we’ve got you covered. On a practical level, a Wiccan altar is a centralized place where all your most important tools for spellcasting reside. There’s a lot less hunting for missing objects when they have a designated space. On the other hand, if your altar serves a very specific purpose–like honoring a deity or performing a specific kind of spell–you might be better served by paring down the objects on your altar. This will allow you to really focus on those elements that are amplifying your purpose to its fullest potential. Many Wiccans will suggest creating your altar facing north, as this is traditionally associated with the element of earth. A northward-facing altar can help you feel grounded and secure in your practice. There are two main benefits to constructing your own personal altar–one of them is spiritual and the other is practical. And despite the fact that we often emphasize the spiritual over the practical, I think it’s important to look at both aspects for your own journey. Spiritual Benefits Creating an maintaining a Wiccan altar isn’t the most time- or energy-intensive thing you can do, but it does take work. And if the thought of adding another obligation to your plate sounds like the last thing you want, then it’s perfectly fine to hold off on creating one. Firstly, a portable altar would probably do better outdoors. You don’t want your altar to be damaged by the weather, and unless you’re living in paradise, you probably don’t experience clear skies and nice temperatures 365 days a year. Place the feather on the Eastern side of your altar, and welcome the spirits of the East: the air, intellect, gratitude for breath, intuition, etc. Your feather represents the element air.

Additionally, you could rearrange the objects on your altar without adding any new ones to help better serve your specific purposes. For example, if I’m performing a spell that invokes the four elements or cardinal directions, I will sometimes rearrange my altar into four quadrants, with each representing a different element. Just Changing Things Up There’s no denying it–I’m someone who loves planning involved rituals with plenty of symbolism and other bells and whistles. But that’s not the only way to be a witch–and I get that. This post explains a bit about the many ways you can create a powerful magical witch’s altar that is perfect for you and your practice.
