About this deal

Source: Harish Jonnalagadda / Android Central (Image credit: Source: Harish Jonnalagadda / Android Central) For WAN interfaces, the UDM-Pro has a 10 Gbps SFP+ and a 1 Gbps RJ45 port. For LAN interfaces, the UDM-Pro has a 10 Gbps SFP+, and a 8-port gigabit RJ45 Ethernet switch. It has similar hardware to the UDM-Pro, without the hard drive bay. The UXG-Pro has two 10 Gbps SFP+ ports, and two 1 Gbps RJ45 ports. It has the same CPU as the UDM-Pro, but half the RAM. It supports dual-WAN configurations, and the same policy-based routing and load balancing options as the Dream Machines.

The new UniFi Cloud portal provides simple access to all controllers and an increasing number of UniFi applications.Like the USG, the USG-Pro is old, and most of the limitations apply. The USG-Pro has slightly more powerful hardware than the USG, but not by much. If you’re comparing to the EdgeRouter line, the EdgeRouter Pro (discontinued) and the USG-Pro share a CPU, and have similar performance. Run the same Unifi Applications (Network, Protect, Access, Talk) and one other but we'll ignore that. The UDM and UniFi OS Consoles in general were a big change in the UniFi line. Before, it was easy to run the UniFi Network application anywhere, and add any devices you wanted. With the UDM, you’re forced to use the built-in Network application, meaning you can’t add a UDM to a Cloud Key or self-hosted UniFi Network controller.

Ubiquiti launched the UniFi Dream Machine and Dream Machine Pro around a year ago, with the UDM-Pro being launched in February 2020. Both devices take the modular approach that Ubiquiti has with UniFi and condenses a few products into one simpler to use and in some cases, less expensive but that can come with some added complication. The UDM combines a Cloud Key controller, USG gateway, 4 port ethernet switch and an access point. The UDM-Pro combines a Cloud Key controller, USG gateway, 8 port ethernet switch with 2 SFP+ ports and a 3.5-inch drive for UniFi Protect, essentially making it an appliance server. This really does make total sense as an addition that I could see becoming standard when the next version is released or certainly the ability to physically add the drive in after manufacturer if needed. It has POE! Playlists can be created with a configurable live camera feed rotation. Define the cameras you want included in the playlist and how long you want them to appear on the screen before moving on to the next live feed. The 3rd chart is for the standalone, independent UniFi gateways that require a Cloud Key or some other controller. The UDM SE or Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition has now been released, and we can take our first look at this brand new device. UniFi Cloud Gateway supporting all UniFi applications: Network, Protect, Talk, Access, Connect, and Identity. I have to think though that if you have a connection that fast your needs are probably going to be pushing what the software supports, that said a 2.5Gbe port does make sense even if it won't be needed that often - yet. Integrated 128 GB SSD

Initially, the aspect that we were worried about with the UDM Pro was fan noise, based on the experience of users with the UniFi USG-PRO-4. A number of users have complained in online forums about excessive fan noise with the USG-PRO-4, and some owners have resorted to changing out the internal fans. Fan noise can disturbing if the device is located nearby. With the UDM Pro, we have found fan noise depends critically on whether a hard disk is installed to store surveillance video. Without a hard drive installed, we are delighted to report that, although the UDM Pro is equipped with two fans, we have never heard fan noise in several weeks of testing. So, if you are sensitive to fan noise, opt for the UDM Pro instead of the USG-PRO-4. Forwarding ports is not an easy task. Moreover, a single mistake can even mess up your router’s firmware settings. Once you’ve collected all the necessities, you’ll then need to follow the steps below to set up port forwarding on your UDM Pro router: To access your server or applications without any interruptions, make sure to allow access to specific ports on your firewall. The default port for UDM Pro is:

UniFi gateway routers, like the Dream Machine or next-gen Gateway Lite, appear simple until you dig below the surface. There are two categories and a few models in each. Ubiquiti also have UISP Routers and EdgeRouters, which may be a better option for more advanced networks. UniFi is separate from UISP, and this guide focuses on UniFi. While many routers are able to support (WAN to LAN) throughputs of close to 1 Gbps in their default modes, switching on SQM (if available) usually reduces available throughputs dramatically. While throughput reductions may not affect broadband users with relatively modest speeds, up to now, broadband users with ultrafast broadband connections (with speeds in excess of 300 Mbps) have not (until the release of the UDM Pro) been well served. The beauty of the UniFi system is that you can mix the type of UniFi Access Points used, for example, deploying the highest-performing Access Points in high-traffic areas while providing cost-effective Wi-Fi coverage using cheaper devices in lower-traffic areas. There’s always a cost-effective upgrade path with this system. The UDM-Pro runs UniFi OS, which means it can also run the UniFi Protect, UniFi Talk and UniFi Access software if needed. UniFi Protect is their network video recording software. Talk is for controlling their VoIP phones, and Access is their upcoming access control system. More on those later. The UDM-Pro and UDM-SE are full UniFi Cloud Gateways, and they can run all of the UniFi applications:

Embedded Honeypot functionality can detect malware, worms, and other types of malicious traffic trying to scan your network for vulnerabilities. Ubiquiti's UniFi Dream Machine Pro (UDM-Pro) is an all-in-one network appliancefor a scalable network in an office, retail, or hospitality environment.Powered by a fast 1.7 GHz quad-core processor, the UDM Procombines multiple functions into a single device: Over the years, Ubiquiti have changed their naming conventions. Currently, the UXG-Lite and UXG-Pro are “ UniFi Gateways” while the UDR, UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, and UDW are “ UniFi Cloud Gateways”. Previously, the UXG-Pro was “Routing Offload”, and the Cloud Gateways were “UniFi OS Consoles” or “Gateway Consoles”. The UDM-Pro is a 1U appliance, made out of metal. It looks similar to the USG-Pro, with a few added features and much faster performance. The faster WAN port is nice but for me on the Sunny Isle of Man this isn't a selling point since very little gets that fast and we can just want to move right along.
