About this deal

In terms of design, the Seiko Prospex Sumo has a distinctive aesthetic that sets it apart from other dive watches. The watch has a bold and chunky case, with a large bezel that is easy to grip and turn. The dial is simple and easy to read, with large hour markers and hands that are coated with Seiko’s proprietary Lumibrite material for enhanced visibility in low-light conditions. We are also able to offer an exchange to a different product if required, please specify this when returning your product. The Seiko Prospex Sumo SPB101J1 has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. This means that it can run for up to 70 hours after being fully wound. Tuna, Samurai, Alpinist, Turtle, and many more… There are dozens of emblematic watches with Seiko‘s logo printed on their dials. Many are part of the Prospex range, dedicated to dive watches and professionally-speced models in general. The collection has been largely revamped recently, with many of the classic models updated and upgraded with more resistant materials and better execution – think about the King Samurai, the King Turtle or the new Shogun. Slightly overlooked recently, it’s now time for the Sumo to resurface, with new editions with revised materials and cool design elements. Here are the Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver 200m SPB321J1 & SPB323J1. An emblematic model from 2007 The Seiko SPB101J1 (SBDC083 ), also known as the Seiko Sumo, is perhaps one of the greatest entry-level sports watches and one of the better built-in Seikos line-up for the money. In 2019 Seiko finally updated their Sumo models giving them a slightly different and refined look, but perhaps most important an in-house improved movement Caliber 6R35.

Lastly, the Orient Kamasu (RA-AA0004E19A) is another comparable watch to the Seiko Prospex Sumo. It features a similar design with a stainless steel case and a reliable automatic movement. However, the Kamasu has a slightly smaller case size and a more affordable price point, making it a great option for those on a budget. The Seiko Prospex Diver 200m SBDC031 was launched in 2007, as a mid-range offer, above the entry-level Turtle and Samurai and below the MarineMaster 300m. A better movement than the two affordable pieces on one side, a case with more attention to details too, but a lower water-resistance and no sapphire crystal like the MM300. The Seiko “Sumo” Diver 200m SBDC031, as is was between 2007 until 2018.Yes, the Seiko Prospex Sumo SPB101J1 is water-resistant up to 200 meters. This makes it suitable for swimming and diving. Seiko – the brand that has become synonymous with affordable and qualitative affordable timepieces. In fact, we would even dare to say that Seiko’s watches are some of the best value money can buy if you factor in finish, quality, and durability. At its very edge, closest to the crystal, it is sloped. This means the bezel sits taller than the actual crystal, which keeps it protected and minimizes the risk of getting scratches on it. Speaking of the crystal, this watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal. This is something that the predecessor did not have. A big improvement indeed. In 2019, under the new references SPB101J1 and SPB103J1, the Sumo was slightly revised. The overall design was maintained, with only minor alterations. The bezel insert was redesigned with a more discreet scale, a new green dial/bezel model was launched. What really changed was the use of a sapphire crystal and the new calibre 6R35, with a beefed-up power reserve. The 2022 Seiko Sumo

This is a serious dive watch, so naturally, it has a good water-resistance. The Sumo SPB103j1 has a water-resistance of 200m/660 feet which makes it suitable for swimming, diving, and essentially any type of water activity. What is particularly interesting about this design is that its design has remained more or less unchanged since it was first presented, which goes to show it is a truly timeless design. Something watch enthusiast love, and proof that Seiko has done a great job with the design. The watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal, making it extremely durable in rough conditions, and with a water resistance of 200M, you won’t have to worry about using your watch in water. Although the water resistance is told to be 200M, Seiko always tests their watches to see if they can handle more pressure than they are made for, which is done by always testing 25% more than what is specified. With that said, inofficially the case is 250M water-resistant. The lugs are 20mm, which is one of the most common sizes for watch straps, and with the drilled holes on the side, it is easy to remove and change straps and bracelets on it.The drilled lugs also contribute to giving the watch a more tool-like appearance which really enriches the tool-like look.

Today, we sat down to take a look at the new Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver at Baselworld 2019: an update to a fan favorite. Overall, the dial is very well executed and manages to stay true to the Sumo design, whilst adding a very vibrant colorful touch. The lime on this watch is great and glows brightly for many hours, which we expect in a dive watch. Looking at the case and the overall design, these updated Sumo SPB321J1 and SPB323J1 are typical no-surprise models. It’s all about improving the quality, not the style. As such, the oversized dimensions of the original Sumo are maintained. No downsizing policy here, the Sumo was and still is a large watch with a 45mm diameter, a 12.9mm height and an unmistakable lug-to-lug measurement of over 52mm. Reading this will certainly stop more than one potential customer, however, keep in mind that despite what the specification sheet indicated, the Sumo has always been more comfortable on the wrist than you’ll ever imagine. But don’t expect the comfort of one of the new compact Prospex. The Sumo SPB321J1 here worn on our editor Robin’s 19cm wrist.
