Periogard (chlorhexidine gluconate oral rinse, 0.12%) is an antiseptic indicated for use between dental visits as part of a professional program for the treatment of gingivitis as characterized by redness and swelling of the gingivae, including gingival bleeding upon probing. What Are Side Effects of Periogard? Chlorhexidine may have a bitter aftertaste. Do not rinse your mouth with water immediately after using chlorhexidine, since doing so will increase the bitterness. Rinsing may also decrease the effect of the medicine.

Measure your dose using the cup provided with the medication. Swish the medicine in your mouth for at least 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do not swallow the mouthwash. There is a natural alternative. To avoid taste interference, rinse with PerioGard® after meals. Do not rinse with water or other mouthwashes immediately after rinsing with PerioGard®.Tell all of your health care providers that you take Periogard (chlorhexidine gluconate (oral)). This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists. Wash your hands before and after using chlorhexidine. Keep it away from your eyes and ears. If chlorhexidine gets into your eyes or ears, rinse well with water. Dosage and how to use lozenges Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco. Other Medical Problems

Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) excursions permitted between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Do not add water to the oral rinse. Do not rinse your mouth with water or other mouthwashes right after using Periogard.

2. Key facts

PerioGard® may cause some tooth discoloration, or increase in tartar (calculus) formation, particularly in areas where stain and tartar usually form. It is important to see your dentist for removal of any stain or tartar at least every six months, or more frequently if your dentist advises.
