About this deal

First introduced in the fall of 2014, this limited release begins with fully mature Michter’s Small Batch Bourbon, then it is aged in a secondary toasted barrel. What to Know: The Michter’s US-1 Sour Mash was available in most liquor stores before. However, this expression is becoming invisible in liquor stores and bars due to high demand. (0.97 MiB) After that period of time, it’s generally been assumed that the source of the bourbon inside of Michter’s 10 Year transitioned to Brown-Forman. Michter’s didn’t have Brown-Forman begin producing bourbon for them until 2004. That means the earliest that M10 could have contained Brown-Forman produced bourbon was 2014. Technically, it was probably 2016 seeing as how Joe Magliocco has went on the record to state that no Michter’s 10 Year Bourbon has even been bottled younger than 11.5 years old. Pay attention to that last fact, it’s going to come up again. There’s simply nothing particularly amazing about Michter’s Small Batch. It’s a slightly above-average pour for a way above-average price point.

Why We Like It: This is a rare gem in the world of whiskey, having aged for a quarter of a century, and you can feel the patience and craftsmanship that goes into each sip. [ 2 ] Before the process is started, a distiller must first determine the mash bill: the exact makeup of grains from which the whiskey is made. To qualify as Bourbon, the grains must feature at least 51% corn. Then, a combination of rye, wheat, and malted barley can also be added. Why We Like It: As the name suggests, this spirit is crafted solely from whiskey, without any neutral grain spirits added, before undergoing an aging process in barrels that are “whiskey-soaked” and finally bottled.Moving into the finish, notes of marshmallow linger at first. This eventually transitions the notes of honey mustard. With heavy doses of generic spice, the finish retains traits that have pervaded throughout including an overall dry character. At its baseline, Michter’s is straight bourbon and straight rye. This means that the booze is aged at least two years, or in this case, over four (more on that below). There are other aspects to bourbon and rye, of course, but the main thing to know for Michter’s is the rye is spicier, and the bourbon is just a bit smoother.The next step differentiates Bourbon from whiskey.
