About this deal

Lijjat subsequently developed three core principles: mutual affection and concern (employees all have an equal status); devotion (the workplace is treated not just as a place of employment but also one of reverence); and, sarvodaya or collective ownership (also called trusteeship, a central idea of the historical Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi).

In 17 Indian states, there are 82 branches of the Lijjat Papad Company. Currently, Lijjat Papad exports its goods with the aid of merchant exporters. They export their goods to over 25 nations, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, countries in the Middle East, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Japan, Canada, Australia, and South Africa, among many others. The Lijjat SistersOn 15th February 2018 our Institution was honoured with 'The Greatest Marketing Influencers Award 2018' for exemplary marketing leadership which has contributed to the growth of the Institution by World Federation of Marketing Professionals. The Award was presented to our President, Smt. Swati R. Paradkar by Dr. Jai Madaan, Renowned Astrologer & Numerologist at a funtion held at Taj Lands, Mumbai. The member-sisters used their organisation as a medium to promote their and their families' welfare. In the Valod centre, they set up an educational and hobby centre for the rural women. Orientation courses in typing, cooking, sewing, knitting and toy making as well as other courses like child welfare, first aid and hygiene were taught. [32] The first ever pucca (tarred) road in Valod to be built and inaugurated in 1979 was with the help of the Lijjat, Valod branch. [33] of India’s population was below the poverty line, and earning capacity of families was not enough to afford a decent standard of living. To make papad in the traditional way, women across India have for generations kneaded and rolled the dough by hand (often as a communal activity) into a thin, round wafer. Thereafter, the wafer is seasoned and dried (customarily under the sun) before deep frying or roasting on an open fire stove. Modern methods may use a microwave oven instead for heating the wafer. This process happens only in Vashi and Nasik. The mix of hing and pepper powder is added to the flour and saltwater is prepared in the final step. After this, dough is prepared and distributed among the employees. Everyone is given a standard base and rolling pin to ensure the equal size of papads from every region.

The flour would first arrive from the mills at the central location where the dough is made. After the dough is made, the sisters would be brought by a bus facility provided by the company. They would collect the dough, go home, make papads, dry them on the veranda and then deliver the papads the next day. And lastly, after the delivery of the papads, they would collect the money and the dough for the next cycle. In 1980, Lijjat started Chhaganbapa Smruti Scholarships for the daughters of the member-sisters of the organization. Grants have also been provided to help members improve their ability to use information technology tools such as computers. These funds, moreover, are often extended to include the sisters’ families, especially their daughters. Jaswantiben Popat, 94-year-old Padma Shri awardee, is the only living co-founder of Lijjat Papad. She received the fourth highest civilian award of the country for her distinguished work under the ‘trade and industry’ category.

Lijjat' provides scholarships to the children of the sister members who pass out in 10th and 12th standard examinations every year so as to enable the Lady Members to encourage their children for education. Where on one side where we’ve got these evil companies, who would put the health of their frontline workers at stake just to maximize their profits; on the other side we’ve got Lijjat Papad where even if they have a great year, they make use of the extra profits to sponsor the education of the children of their frontline workers. They do all of this just so that the next generation of these frontline workers can be given the opportunities that they truly deserve. Lijjat won the “Best Village Industry” award (1998 to 2001) presented by the Khadi & Village Industries Commission – a subsection of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of India. The central office at Mumbai previously coordinated the activities of various branches. But, as the organisation grew, the authority was decentralised in terms of work and sharing of profits at the branch level. However, the sanchalikas still need the managing committee's approval before they undertake any new project or activity. With IP secured assets in India, the EU and the USA, the women’s only organization has been able to grow with confidence into new markets around the world. IP infringement
