David was briefed to create a super-premium gin reflecting Berry Brother's heritage and the core attributes of a classically styled London dry gin. Importantly, he was also tasked that the new gin should make the world's best G&T and Dry Martini. Dr. David Clutton, one of the distilling experts behind No.3 Gin, adds: “For a great martini, you need a great gin. You don’t need a whole host of botanicals to make a gin taste good; a good gin has to be built on top-quality juniper. When you drink a martini, you get this lovely, fresh aroma from the juniper, alongside slightly bitter, earthy notes from the angelica. A lot of the aromas and flavour compounds in lemon are also very similar to those found in juniper, making citrus the perfect garnish for a martini. I like to compare it to an orchestra or a choir – all the ingredients are complementary, giving you a longer length of taste. The latest step in the Louth Distillery journey is that the premises have been opened up for the public to take tours and see where the magic happens, as well as trying out various flavours of Pin Gin, or even making your own bottle. Tanqueray London Dry Gin – This has an iconic red wax seal with its distilled green bottle. Tanqueray is you traditional London dry gin without citrus in the botanicals. It has a higher alcohol volume compared to other gin brands. When the temperature in the still reaches 81 to 82°C the vapours start to rise into the genever helmet at the top of the still and eventually up into and across the lyne arm to the condenser. The condenser is also vintage and is a traditional wooden worm tub with a copper worm, the type of now rare condenser beloved by malt whisky aficionados. The marketing spiel says this is “gin, just as it should be”, and while marketing spiels are usually guff, this one happens to be spot on. It’s hard to find a gin simultaneously this archetypal – it’s a classic London Dry – this elegant, and this flavourful (the finish goes on and on). Whether you’re a G&T obsessive or martini connoisseur, No. 3 hits the mark every time. Though, for the record: we like it best with a slug of classic Indian tonic.
