About this deal

The bottle opener, though not the epitome of elegance, did its job efficiently at the campfire, popping open beverage bottles as we reveled in the night’s tranquility. However, the wire stripper remained untested, as did the lanyard hole’s other purported use – a pseudo wire stripper. Perhaps on another adventure, they’ll find their purpose. Like the Mullet, stripping and cutting wire was difficult. The effort required to strip a wire is substantial. A lot of people will say that Leatherman pays closer attention to detail, but Gerber still produces excellent tools. Many of their top products are still made right in Oregon by American manufacturing, something a lot of EDC enthusiasts prefer. Gerber initially released the Shard as a trade show giveaway with no plans to sell it to the general public. As photographs of the Shard made their way out on the internet, public demand to get a production version produced grew. Finally, Gerber caved and decided to make the Shard for sale.

Gerber clearly wanted to make the MP600 a tool anyone could use, but we feel they made some significant compromises to do so. The tools themselves have well, interesting, designs. There is also no version that comes standard with a removable bit driver. You have to buy aftermarket accessories for that. Don’t get us wrong though, the MP600 is a well made multi tool with a lot to like about it. For Gerber it really comes down to the Dime. It’s a tiny little tool that includes a lot of useful tools. Gerber used a standard butterfly fold design with a little set of pliers as the main tool. It’s basically a full size multi tool that Gerber shrunk down to fit on your keychain. The Gerber Dime is very popular and has a lot of dedicated fans but it doesn’t always hold up against some of Leatherman’s products. The Gerber Dime product picture We like the design of the OHT better, but overall think the Center Drive is more useful to the average person. If Leatherman released a multi tool with the OHT’s design but a more generalist set of tools we’d have to reevaluate. Carrying the Mullet can be done on a key ring, or the mullet portion can be looped into a belt loop. Beyond that, it offers an O2 driver for opening…you guessed it, oxygen in emergencies. I think it could reasonably cut through a seatbelt. We’ve used them while crashing at long-term AirBnbs to tighten screws on tables and drawers as a nice gesture toward the host, but also for happiness’ sake. Gerber Shard Phillips Head Screwdriver Chances are, if you’re awake and have on clothes, you’ve got your keys with you. So a multitool that can attach to your keys without weighing you downends up being one of the most useful tools you can buy, because you’ll actually end up having it on you and using it when you need it. But what’s the best when it comes to keychain multitools? Features include spring-loaded needle-nose pliers and an internal wire cutter. Small handles greatly benefit from the spring-loaded design, making gripping and ripping pretty easy. In addition, you won’t have to manipulate the small handles here constantly. Obviously, the pry bar is not a tool for extended use, but that isn’t our expectations for a sub-3 inch tool. For short periods of time, it can help you get what you need done. It opens a can of paint or helps pull open a rusty ammo box or anything else we really need to pull on. The jimping on the tool itself is surprising because it really does give you a bit extra grip when using the pry bar. #2 Nail Puller When you need to pry things apart or gain access to closed spaces, there's really only one tool for the job: a pry bar. But traditional pry bars are usually too big to carry daily, and even if you could tolerate the weight, lugging one around could give people the wrong impression about your intentions.

Gerber’s logo serves as a clear inspiration for the knife’s frame, offering a shield-like appearance. Gerber Key Note A small and large flathead driver brings the same upward curve as the Mullet but smaller in size and easier to use by far. Both Leatherman and Gerber produce high-quality multi-tools. Leatherman is known for its durable construction, premium materials, and excellent craftsmanship. Gerber also offers reliable multi-tools that are designed to withstand rugged use. Ultimately, the choice between the two may come down to personal preference and specific tool requirements. The Gerber Center Drive took the slide out plier system in use on most of Gerber’s full sized multi tools and added a purpose built center axis bit driver. The goal was to create something capable of fully replacing pliers and screwdrivers in the handyman’s toolbox. Overall they did a pretty good job with it. The pliers work as well as any of their multi tools and the driver is actually a pretty nice innovation.

Features & Usage

The large lanyard hole actually allows you to use all of it’s 7 tools without taking it off, which sets itself apart from many other keychain tools. Let’s take a look at the Shard’s 7 functions and how they hold up. (Gerber counts the lanyard hole as a tool . . . but we’ve ignored that and replaced it with the wire stripping functionality the v-notch gives.) #1 Pry Bar Leatherman and Gerber are well-known manufacturers of multi-tools. Multi-tools are compact, versatile tools that combine various functions into a single device, making them useful for camping, hiking, and survival activities. Both the tools are marketed as airline safe or TSA friendly. I have heard many stories of passengers successfully taking these tools with them during air travel. However, I would be skeptical of such claims. No airline officially declares any specific multi-tool as TSA approved, and your chances will depend on the country, the airline, and the whims of the TSA staff on duty on the day of your travel.
