About this deal

Each player's clue either states an area where the creature can be found, or where it cannot be found, based on the terrain and structures on the board. During the game, you will ask each other questions with the aim of guessing each other's clues. The first player to correctly use all of the clues to find the habitat wins the game. I don’t want people to read this thinking it is a negative review. There is a lot to enjoy about the game. If you’re a fan of puzzle games, this will very much be up your street. My biggest issue comes down to it being sold as a deduction game. Finally beware of the scarecrow, do not get too close them or they'll suddenly give chase! They'll stalk you from just out of your vision range and take small movements whilst visible. It takes several games of Cryptid to get used to the way it looks, and that can be off-putting to players who are already on the fence about a game this analytical. The terrain tiles, by necessity, feature a wide array of colors and textures as they need to easily represent differing types of topography such as water, deserts, forests, mountains, and swamps. That much is forgivable, because there’s really no way to make 5 tile-types look distinct and still mesh. It’s the minutia of the game that make an already challenging premise doubly so. Deduction games are one of my favourite mechanics. I grew up playing Cluedo regularly with my grandparents. The problem is a lot of deduction games require at least three players. Even if they don’t, they generally scale better to a higher player count. As I don’t have a regular board game group, Cryptid: Urban Legends, a two-player deduction game certainly appealed to me. To Start The Game

While the simple binary of the game’s information system may make it seem manageable, if you want to win you’ll need to make sure you’re a step ahead of everyone else. That’s not always as easy as it seems in a game where information is accessible to all and you are forbidden from lying. Which is where the next layer to Cryptid begins to reveal itself after a handful of plays, because while you must always tell the truth with your yeses and nos, there’s no rule against misdirection. Players cannot afford to look away from the board, as any information that’s revealed is crucial for everyone. You may also be questioned by any player on their turn, so it’s a game that keeps everyone engaged until the Cryptid is found. This is the simple and thrilling joy you’ll find as you, the cryptozoologist, connect the dots to uncover the elusive creature in Cryptid. What is Cryptid? The fastest way to set up a new game is to put the cards and clue books away, then follow the instructions at: playcryptid.com.

No special cards. No victory points. Just you and your brain racing to find the answer before your opponents. left and right hand columns around the map image indicate which map tile goes where, while the dots in each corner of the tile indicate its rotation. The dot on the map image highlights the space on the tile which contains the number.

There are 10 dateable characters: 3 girls, 4 guys, and 3 non-binary pals. They're a healthy mix of legendary and local cryptids and monsters! On your turn you will either ask another player a question, or search a space. The turn will then pass to the player on your left, unless you've correctly discovered the habitat. As soon as one player places a cube, everyone stops. No one else makes a declaration, and you must now place a cube on a different space which cannot be the habitat according to your clue. The turn now passes to the player on your left.To question, place the pawn on a space on the map, and ask any other player 'Could the creature be here?' This isn’t a game for those who want a lot of theme. I’m glad they went for something unusual, but you never feel like Cryptozoologists. This can be excused because that’s not why you play a puzzle, no one has attempted to add theme to a Sudoku.
