Studies have shown that in most songbirds, the basic call notes are instinctive. But in many species, the young male must hear its species’ song at a certain age to learn it. This is important because it leads to more individual variability in songs than in calls. The gartered trogon is a colorful bird that chirps a rolling chattering sound or sings a long series of hollow and rapid notes sounding like kyu-kyu-kyu. These birds have very large, yellow-ringed eyes allowing them to see well in low light and also be among the first to contribute to the dawn chorus before sunrise. Spring’s here, and there’s a birdy party raging outdoors. It's loud, it's raucous, and for the untrained ear, it's often incoherent. But don't fret. With a little practice, you can begin decoding all those songs and calls, which will in turn give you remarkable insights into the species around you. Honing your birding ear can also reveal hidden details in the field. For instance, you’ll know to look for raptors when you hear songbirds whistle in alarm. Or you’ll learn to give a Killdeer some space because it’s “trilling” to protect its nest. You can find these birds in deciduous forests and woodlands throughout Europe and Asia. They typically spend the winter in South Asia, North Africa, and southern Europe. Listen for their chiff chaff song at the start of spring. The little grey tufted titmouse is recognizable by the crest of grey feathers at the top of its head. It also has a unique song and echoing voice that creates a crisp, whistled “peter-peter-peter” sound that carries in the air. Although a morning chirper, these birds tend to start their calls when it’s light enough for them to see.

Try to pay attention to the pitch (whether the notes are high or low), the tempo (or speed), and how the tone sounds. Once you have a rough description, you can see if they fit the characterizations that most birders and field guides use.

Technically speaking, the Eastern Whip-poor-will is not a songbird, yet its fabled call, which inspired its name, has enchanted generations. Breeding males repeat their songs deep into spring and early summer nights within the bird's remaining eastern U.S. range. The song thrush is mainly found in northern Africa, western Europe, and the Middle East during the winter. They breed in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and most of Russia. One of the most iconic birds of the Eastern U.S, cardinals are well-known morning singers. Males may sing throughout the year in some places, but they are best known for their spring and early summer singing throughout their range. They are known to have many songs and calls, but the most common are a string of two-parted whistles (“cheer, cheer, cheer or birdie, birdie, birdie”) that end in a slow trill.

Generally, rich sounds are low and full, and thin songs are high and faint. You can see this contrast in Blue Grosbeak and Indigo Bunting songs; the grosbeak’s is much richer. For good reason, birds are emblematic of the morning — that's when many are most vocal — but some species find their voice after dark, and listening to these birds chirping at night can be a uniquely enchanting (or eerie) experience.
