Wood could be affected by the moisture and take time to dry out and could deteriorate over time. But the sound is clearly better. Perhaps plastic is fine for the student, and wood becomes a choice when the level of play demands it. Historically, strings were made of sinew (animal tendons). [2] [3] Other materials have included gut (animal intestines), [4] plant fiber, [4] braided hemp, [5] cotton cord, [6] silk, [7] nylon, [8] and wire. [9] History [ edit ] The Harps of Chogha Mish Iran are considered to be the world's oldest surviving stringed instruments, 3300-3100 B.C.E [10] Most of the Suzuki range of harmonicas are tuned to an ET design. That has nothing to do with ‘going home’. It is a description of the tuning. ET, or Equal Temperate tuning, divides the octave into equal steps. It tends to sound better if you are playing single notes. Mexican jarocha harp music of Veracruz has also gained some international recognition, evident in the popularity of " La Bamba". [ original research?] The arpa jarocha is typically played while standing. In southern Mexico (Chiapas), there is a very different indigenous style of harp music. [35] Probably because the first sound to catch our ear is cross harp (2nd Position). The bulk of harp music is played in cross harp and naturally we want to imitate what we hear. So 2nd Position is a very convenient portal for entering the blues arena.a b Guerrero Briceño, Fernando F. (1999). El arpa en Venezuela. FundArte, Alcaldía de Caracas. On a C-chromatic, starting hole is the same, resulting in C major scale. This is the main position used for playing folk music on the harmonica. the traditional llanera harp, made of Cedar wood and has 32strings, originally of the gut, but in modern times are of nylon. It is used to accompany both dancers and singers playing joropo music, a traditional form of Venezuelan music, also known as llanera music. [36] As mentioned above, harmonicas are tuned to a specific key. It’s best to get a harmonica tuned to the key of C if you’re just starting out. You’ll be able to play up to 3 octaves on a C major scale. Many of the songs you will learn are also tuned to the key of C. Most blues harmonicas are played in what's called a "second position" or also known as a "cross harp". This means playing the harmonica tuned to a perfect fourth below the original key of the written music by using the 2 draw hole as a root note instead of using the 4 blow hole used for the first position and original key. If the music is written in G, then a C harmonica is used in the second position. This is the most common position used for playing blues.

However, I don’t think the quality of these instruments is high enough for an experienced player, let alone a pro. It is though a basic harmonica with no frills attached other than a replica of a great design. The price point for such an instrument by Hohner is very low and going to be attractive. The modern harmonica is thought to have been invented in Germany in the mid-1800s. The term “harp” comes from an earlier incarnation of the harmonica called an aeolian, or wind-harp. Here’s a deconstructed harmonica so you can see the inner workings. Blues Harmonica Blueprint Lesson #4: Holding A diatonic harmonica is designed to ease playing in one diatonic scale. Here is a standard diatonic harmonica's layout in the key of C (1 blow is middle C): Genesis". If it has a fault, it is that the higher notes sometimes come out a little weaker. That is not uncommon with some harmonicas. But the sound generally is more than acceptable. the arpa central (also known as arpa mirandina 'of Miranda State’, and arpa tuyera 'of the Tuy Valleys’) is strung with wire in the higher register. [37] But Williamson was not the only innovator of his time. A young harmonicist by the name of Marion " Little Walter" Jacobs would completely revolutionize the instrument. He had new idea of playing the harmonica near a microphone. Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, Sonny Terry(1911 - 1986), Junior Wells (1934 - 1998), James Cotton, Sugar Blue, Snooky Pryor, and Little Sonny were blues harp players also. Blues guitarist Jimmy Reed (1925 - 1976) sometimes played blues harp.

Playing the harmonica in the key to which it is tuned is known as "straight harp" or "first position" playing. For example, playing music in the key of C on a C-tuned harmonica. This is designed I assume very much for a starter. It is in the key of ‘C’ and is designed to be quite versatile. It is a ten-hole harmonica with a traditional four-inch length and a chrome metal cover. And it has been made to be a cheaper version, so it has not been fitted with a wooden comb. Instead, it has a molded PVC plastic comb. Alvad, Thomas (October 1954). "The Kafir Harp". Man. Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland. 54: 151–154. doi: 10.2307/2795578. If you are already comfortable with the basics of harmonica playing, feel free to skip over the beginner lessons, but I recommend you watch this segment for an explanation of the “Time-Dot” tab, and the segment titled “The Layout” so you’ll be familiar with the visual systems we’ll be using at various points throughout the course. And if you’re not familiar with music theory, don’t worry. Some of the greatest blues harp players of all time couldn’t read music. There’s a little theory here and there to help you get familiar with basic terms. The materials used in manufacture can be important for a number of reasons, and there are differing opinions about that issue. In addition to playing the diatonic harmonica in its original key, it is also possible to play it in other keys by playing in other "positions", using different keynotes. Using just the basic notes on the instrument would mean playing in a specific mode for each position (e.g. playing in D Dorian or G mixolydian on a C Major harmonica), but techniques such as bending enable different modes to be used at each position (e.g. playing in E mixolydian on a C Major harmonica). Harmonica players (especially blues players) have developed a set of terminology around different "positions" which can be somewhat confusing to other musicians. There are twelve "natural positions" (one for each semitone), numbered from 1st position as given (on a standard 10-hole diatonic) by the note on the 1 blow and going up round the cycle of 5ths - so on a C harp, 1st position gives C, 2nd position G, 3rd D, 4th A etc. With this numbering system, positions 7-11 (on a C instrument, those having keynotes This is very much a budget level Hohner, and is one of the few Hohner harmonicas that are made in China. It is aimed at the starter and those learning to play Blues harmonica. For this reason, the Blues Bender has been designed to help the student bend the notes, hence the name. Secondly, playing in 1st Position demands strong use of deep draw bends at the low end of the harp. This takes muscle and not everybody can cut it. Proficient use of high end blow bends is also essential. But it is hard to master. We may feel it is unachievable and shy away.

The modern Celtic harp began to appear in the early 19thcentury in Ireland, contemporary with the dying-out of earlier forms of Gaelic harp. Dublin pedal harp maker John Egan developed a new type of harp which had gut strings and semitone mechanisms like an orchestral pedal harp; it was small and curved like the historical cláirseach or Irish harp, but its strings were of gut and the soundbox was much lighter. [54] In the 1890s a similar new harp was also developed in Scotland as part of a Gaelic cultural revival. [55] In the mid-20thcentury Jord Cochevelou developed a variant of the modern Celtic harp which he referred to as the "Breton Celtic harp"; his son Alan Stivell was to become the most influential Breton harper, and a strong influence in the broader world of the Celtic harp.

The Chang flourished in Persia in many forms from its introduction, about 4000BCE, until the 17th century. Internally it is quite similar to other harmonicas and features phosphor bronze reeds. It hasn’t got a wooden comb, though. That is made from ABS plastic. As we have mentioned, this isn’t considered a problem for many players. This harmonica also has a Doussie wood mouthpiece. The covers are stainless steel, and it has brass reed plates. You can see then that Hohner has used quality materials in the manufacture of this instrument.
