About this deal

It’s a beautiful evocation of a small mixed woodland in Herefordshire through a calendar year. It’s a diary of the changing wood, its character and its wildlife, but also of the pigs and cattle that he brings into the wood to help manage it and feed on it. Food Standards Agency (in England and Wales) or the local environmental health department: if you want to produce and sell milk.

It really made for a fun read and has me aching to return to Scotland - the home of my soul, the land of my blood.

This is one of my favourite reads because it’s about rural life, but also so much more. It’s all about the edges, the interfaces, the bits of life, society, geography and… fields… which have their own special quality simply because they’re on the edges. I will buy anything related to Outlander and this is a profound book, along the lines of the Ewan McGregor/Charlie Boorman, Billy Connolly or Bill Bryson books. Were it really shined was the narration of events in Scottish history, particularly the Battle of Culloden. It really came alive. As a smallholder, you’re free to grow what you want on your plot of land. One of the upsides of having a smallholding can be the variety of produce that you grow throughout the year, and you’re really only limited by your own imagination and the land that you’re growing on. Various soil types (e.g. sandy, clay, silt) will suit various species of crop and it’s worth experimenting with to see how each one does. Part of the beauty of being a smallholder is getting to know your land and what can be grown on it. Written with a poet’s eye for evocative detail, Bullough’s powerful tale evokes the bleak, brooding beauty of his native landscape… Addlands is an immensely enjoyable and haunting story – but keep a handkerchief nearby”

Change the plan you will roll onto at any time during your trial by visiting the “Settings & Account” section. What happens at the end of my trial? Addlands sensitively interweaves the fortunes of its protagonist and of the remote Radnorshire valley where he lives and farms, over seventy years” If you do nothing, you will be auto-enrolled in our premium digital monthly subscription plan and retain complete access for 65 € per month. Graeme is our Agricultural Lead, meaning he knows everything there is to know about peat, farming, soils and so much more! His choice here is about woodland, and he says:The [characters] are realised so fully, and with such vitality, that there seems no doubt about the blood running through their veins… Bullough has a flair for alchemical descriptions, thrillingly repurposing adjectives and verbs… He also clearly savours the tang of his characters’ tongues [with] occasional, gloriously unexpected sunbursts of humour” Which is my best explanation for the setting of this novel. Radnorshire: a place of history, but also, literally, a place of the imagination. And, in Radnorshire, where else but the Edw Valley? Fresh, seasonal, environmentally-friendly produce for your table might be the result, but for many smallholders the joy is in the process. Personally, having gotten a Masters in Celtic and Scottish Studies, none of the stories of Scotland were new to me. However, they were entertainingly told, and great for anyone unfamiliar with the vast and varied history of Scotland. Aside from one noticeable Gaidhlig error (dualchais does not mean belonging per se, but more cultural heritage) its an entertaining and fairly accurate book.

I'm finding this difficult to rate because I struggled in the first half trying to decide if I would continue for the reasons I've given. I'm glad I did because the second half was so much more. In the end, it will be 3 stars but if it were possible 3.5. The writing style and organization of this book was wonderfully done in that it read as part memoir, part adventure, and part historical fact. Although that may sound strange, it combined excellently into an enjoyable and balanced read. Materials to build fences and animal housing, or plant beds (using recycled materials here can save costs). After reading this book physically, I can't help but want to listen to the audiobook which I believe is narrated by the authors. This book was hilarious and I think the narration would make it even funnier. Addlands is a gorgeous and painstaking evocation of the land and those who work it. Bullough’s writing is a joy—disciplined, observant, and musical, blissfully free of cliché.” —Andrew Miller, winner of the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award

Intended to benefit both people and wildlife, Local Nature Reserves are protected areas of land, such as ponds or parks, that are deemed to benefit the local community that lives on or near them. Used for the likes of exercise, wildlife watching and more. Local Authorities designate and manage LNRs and generally do not approve any developments on them.
