About this deal

However, the Hunts did present a new nuisance in that the rim was too wide for my Shimano Ultegra R8000 brake calipers. I've not had this problem before and solved it by removing the spacer behind the brake pad housing – not ideal. Even then, the pads barely lifted off the rim and the modulation of the levers was non-existent. What was more bizarre is I didn't have to go to the same extremes on the rear wheel. Riding the Hunt 50 Carbon Wide Aero wheels That said, it looks like the industry has finally settled on one unifying standard for disc brake road bikes: 12mm thru-axles with 100mm spacing in the front dropouts and 142mm spacing at the rear. The 404s have a hookless rim with an internal width of 23mm. The hookless rim can make finding compatible tubeless tyres difficult. But find a tyre that fits and the wide rim combined with the low pressures you can run with a tubeless setup means this version of the 404 is much more comfortable than its predecessor. Just as road bikes are now increasingly being designated according to their use (race, endurance, aero, gravel and so on), wheels also fit into similar categories. The advantage of tubular tyres largely lies in the fact that a tubular wheelset can be made relatively lighter. This is because the material used to create a rim that can withstand the high internal pressure of a clincher or tubeless tyre adds significant weight.

The Vels are a really great way to upgrade your standard wheels, which are typically the main component scrimped on when big brands are speccing bikes. The 48 Limitless UD Carbon Spoke Disc is Hunt’s top-of-the-range aero wheelset, with the brand’s latest Aerodynamicist rim profile and carbon spokes for good measure. Spokes: Pieces of wire or sometimes carbon fibre that lace the hubs to the rim. The number of spokes per wheel and the material choice is important. In most wheels, the spokes are under tension and this is what gives the wheel its structure. Finding those small efficiency gains is hard fought at this level and for Cadex, they've come from design changes to the hub, the spokes, and the shape of the tyre. Visually, the aero shaping of the hubs and the slightly taller hookless bead, which makes for a more aerodynamic tyre profile, aren't particularly noticeable. The hub internals haven't changed radically either. As it was before, it's a ratchet-style hub with 40-tooth engagement that requires no tools to change the freehub.

Spokes lace the hub to the rim. Generally, wheels with higher spoke counts are stronger and more durable, but this comes with a weight and slight aero penalty.

The braking is one of the highlights of these wheels. When used with the supplied pads, the power is really good and it's consistent too. I've been happy to run these in the rain on my winter bike, which has got noticeably faster and more comfortable with these replacing some narrow box section aluminium rims. I did feel the wind a little more, but only when it's properly gusting. Hardly surprising given the depth. What’s more important (from the brand’s perspective), they completely missed the opportunity for branding. The wide internal rim maximises the nominal tyre size, and this improved descending and reduced road buzz. Three-cross: This refers to the lacing pattern of the spokes where each spoke crosses past another three times. This pattern is most common on 32 or higher spoked wheels Open-tubular: A type of clincher tyre system that replicates the construction of a traditional cotton tubular, but in clincher form. Open tubulars differ slightly in their manufacturing technique, which is generally to a level similar to high-end tubulars

Handbuilt wheels take a more classical approach, where the hubs, spokes, nipples and rims can be bought separately and chosen to best suit a rider’s individual needs. Designed to provide awesome speed and quality, blended with a stylish and custom look the VeloElite 50mm Carbon Road Wheels offer a balance of aero and low weight with head turning looks. They feature a deep section 50mm rim, with Sapim CX-Ray Spokes and a choice of 3 different hubs from the DT Swiss range alongside our very own VeloElite ONE hub. You can also follow that line into the performance of the wheels. Sit down and look through a list of modern climbing-specific wheels and the Cadex 50 Ultra is lighter than many of them. As mentioned above, they bring that light weight to the table with exceptional stiffness as well. When you want to climb these wheels are a willing partner. They amplify the personality of any stiff and light bike frame and they never ask you to choose a different wheel if you are looking for light and responsive.

Confusingly, factory wheels are, in fact, commonly built at least partly by hand. The key distinction however is that factory wheels are built to an exact specification and you buy them as an off-the-shelf item, often with proprietary spoke and rim designs. Deep wheels can often feel jarring but the ride quality of the Hunts was fine. I suspect this was partly to do with the superbly supple Vittoria Corsa tyres. The wheels also weren't fazed by blustery cross winds and I didn't feel like I was being thrown across the road. I bought some of the 38mm Prime wheels and actually have been really impressed. Dead easy to go tubeless (I ran them tubed for a bit first then put some 28mm Schwalbe tyres on), super stiff, they're reasonably light but seem nicely durable. Affordable and easy-to-service wheels suitable for flats and steady efforts but with too loud hubs.In theory, spoke tension should be relatively consistent, given the radial and lateral trueness results. At 50mm deep, the wheels offer an aerodynamic advantage but are still versatile enough for a range of riding.
