About this deal

Well, you don’t understand the kind of pressure I’m under,” I’d snapped at him. “What it takes to be me!” To my shame, I had only vague memories of what had happened next or what he’d said, but I knew I’d stood up and walked out on him. So now I’d never even know what it was he’d wanted to tell me. I really enjoyed this book and honestly did not want to put it down. It's unusual for a story to bring me to tears but this one did. I particularly enjoyed Cecily's story and the descriptions of Africa and the 1930's lifestyle. At least when Pa Salt had been alive, I’d known he couldn’t see what I was doing, but now he was dead, he’d somehow become omnipresent; he could have been in the bedroom with me last night or even here in the limo right now …

Okay. Sorry, I’ve got Lagerfeld on the other line. Rebekah will be in touch with a list of suitable PAs. Ciao.” Yes, it’s not great. She was shaping up well.” Susie’s British accent sounded crisp and businesslike. Tiggy D’Aplièse, in her mid-twenties, learns that her father – Pa Salt, an elusive billionaire who adopted his six daughters from around the globe – has died. Trusting her instincts, Tiggy moves to the remote wilds of Scotland and takes a job doing what she loves: caring for animals. Working on the vast and isolated Kinnaird estate, she is employed by the enigmatic and troubled laird, Charlie Kinnaird. The long-anticipated seventh book may reveal what's still missing from this series, because it certainly isn’t detail. The historical story about Cecily Huntley-Morgan was particularly enjoyable. It mostly takes place in Kenya during the late 1930's/1940's, and was quite fascinating. There were times when I wanted to give Cecily a little shake as she was so naive about things, but I realise this was probably typical for many woman of the time -- educated at University, but with little practical knowledge of life. Sometimes I just wanted her to notice what was happening, but of course you cannot expect a rather sheltered and privileged young American woman to immediately grasp the events that are at play around her. She ended up being a pretty incredible character and came along way from the person she was at the beginning. If I needed a reminder of my success, this apartment was it. But what it reminds me of more than anything, I thought as I sank down into the couch that could provide a comfortable bed for at least two full-grown guys, is how lonely I am. Its size made even me feel small and delicate—and up here, right at the top of the building, very, very isolated.

A violent surfacing of adolescence (which has little in common with Tarkington's earlier, broadly comic, Seventeen) has a compulsive impact. Once dessert had arrived, Pa had crossed his arms and regarded me calmly. “I’m extremely worried for you, Electra. You seem to be completely absent.” To the outside world Electra D’Aplièse, in her mid-twenties, seems to have it all: as one of the world’s top models, she is beautiful, rich and famous.I will, thanks.” I was already closing the door behind me. I walked straight past Marcia, the receptionist, and headed for the elevator. It came almost immediately, and as I was whooshed downward, I closed my eyes—I hated any confined spaces—and laid my hot forehead against the cool marble interior. Africa was always a continent that I wanted to explore, and I was drawn to Kenya through the iconic film ‘White Mischief’ staring Greta Scacchi, John Hurt and Charles Dance. I was fascinated by the decadent life of the ‘Happy Valley’ set – the rich colonial settlers who made it their playground. I was also intrigued by the complex relationship between the many races that lived alongside each other: the white settlers, the Maasai, the Kikuyu, the Somalians, and the Indians. Then maybe we should both slow down. Can I tempt you to a week on my yacht? It’s moored in Saint Lucia for the next couple of months before I have it sailed to the Med for the summer.”
