Compelling stories about lies aren’t simple or straightforward or moralistic. Real lies and their repercussions aren’t simple; they don’t just destroy, they create. They’re dualistic by nature and infinitely complicated. You can’t separate truth from lies in neat lanes, as convenient as that would be. They don’t work that way, and neither do we. And all the best writers (and liars) know that. Here are 10 of my favourites. In paragraphs 7 and 8 we find a most important statement, a practical aspect of the fact that all truth is relative, and in the last paragraph we see how scepticism keeps the mind fresh, whereas faith dies in the very sleep that it induces. We talk about getting away and seeing the world, but we never do. We stay here making the same mistakes, over and over. (8) They come from the Great Sea, Binah, the City of the Pyramids. V.V.V.V.V. is indicated as one of these travellers; He is described as a camel, not because of the connotation of the French form of this word, but because “camel” is in hebrew Gimel, and Gimel is the path leading from Tiphareth to Kether, uniting Microprosopus and Macroprosopus, i.e. performing the Great Work. The chapter begins with a repetition of O! referred to in the previous chapter. It is explained that this triad lives in Night, the Night of Pan, which is mystically called N.O.X., and this O is identified with the O in this word. N is the Tarot symbol, Death; and the X or Cross is the sign of the Phallus. For a fuller commentary on Nox, see Liber VII, Chapter I.

The book has some practical wisdom that I enjoyed: "Doubt thyself./Doubt even if thou doubtest thyself." Daisy and Simon have spent years trying to have a baby, after so much heartache and failed attempts at fertility treatment they finally conceived naturally and the beautilly charismatic Millie is born. Now the challange for me with these sorts of books is that although they are not my initial choice I find it hard to describe especially with my own self imposed "no spoilers" rule. This idea, “I must give up”, I owe, is naturally completed by I pay, and the sound of the word “pay” suggest the Hebrew letter Pe (see Liber XVI), which represents the final dissolution in Shivadarshana. He is the letter of Aries, a Martial sign; while the title suggests war. The ants are chosen as small busy objects.

The statement, Nothing is Not, technically equivalent to Something Is, is fully explained in the essay called Berashith. There is an absolutely horrendous scene that involves a kitten which people need to warned of, the cruelty of which beggars belief and which is not necessary. The explanation for Millie’s parentage is unbelievable too and I didn’t buy into that and hence my 3 star rating. I thought the truth had already been revealed, but then right at the very end the REAL truth came out. The massive secret that I never even guessed at. Terrific! The rest of the chapter therefor points out the duality, and therefore the imperfection, of all the lower Sephiroth in their essence. What secrets and lies does Daisy hold to allow her husband to get in that state, you’d think she’d keep more of a measure on his drinking. And the final paragraph, in the words of the noblest simplicity, praises the Great Work; rejoices in its sublimity, in the supreme Art, in the intensity of the passion and ecstasy which it brings forth. (Note that the words “passion” and “ecstasy” may be taken as symbolical of Yoni and Lingam.) The latter sentence of the paragraph unites the two meanings of giving up the Lingam to the Yoni, and the Ego to the Absolute. GLORIA PATRI ET MATRI ET FILIO ET FILIAE ET SPIRITUI SANCTO EXTERNO ET SPIRITUI SANCTO INTERNO UT ERAT EST ERIT IN SAECULA SAECULORUM SEX IN UNO PER NOMEN SEPTEM IN UNO ARARITA.

This Masonic symbol is, however, identified by Frater P. with a bird, which is master of the four elements, and therefore of the name Tetragrammaton. Behold, a scholar, an artist, a megalomaniac? Imagine how intense you must be to feel the need to create and then EXPLAIN your creation. There is something ridiculous about creating symbolic spiritual poetry and then analyzing it for the reader. Dear Aleister, I wish you’d left us some more mystery. The book consists of 91 paradoxes or little sayings. The spirt (but not letter) of which is meant to be koan-like. Kind of. Each of the 91 paradoxes has a commentary written by Crowley (who also calls himself Frater Perdurabo, Latin for Father Endurance). Cat's recently deceased father, Emile, dedicated his adult life to uncovering the truth about the Nazi occupation of Guernsey--from Churchill's abandonment of the island to the stories of those who resisted--in hopes of repairing the reputation of his older brother, Charlie. Through Emile's letters and Charlie's words--recorded on tapes before his own death-- a "confession" takes shape, revealing the secrets deeply woven into the fabric of the island . . . and into the Rozier family story. The book alternates between the diary-style writings of 15-year-old Catherine/Cathy/Cat Rozier and items from her late father's files: interviews he did with his older brother who was interned in a German concentration camp as a teenager and correspondence regarding his research on the Occupation. The chapter consists of a series of complicated puns on 1 and I, with regard to their shape, sound, and that of the figures which resemble them in shape. In line 5, we come to an important statement, an adumbration of the most daring thesis in this book—Father and Son are not really two, but one; their unity being the Holy Ghost, the semen; the human form is a non-essential accretion of this quintessence.

The figure 10, like the work IO, again suggest Lingam-Yoni, besides the exclamation given in the text. The only thing that did make me raise my eyebrows a bit was how the subject of withdrawal was handled. Alcohol is a depressant and when someone drinks as much as Simon is and is suddenly forced to quit cold turkey, there is not just a danger of delirium tremens, which he experienced, but also death. It felt negligible on the part of the people responsible for the abrupt quitting to not know that and slowly wean him off of it, as I believe is more typical in situations like these. It is to be observed that the philosopher having first committed the syllogistic error quaternis terminorum, in attempting to reduce the terms to three, staggers into non distributia medii. It is possible that considerations with Sir Wm. Hamilton's qualification (or quantification (?)) of the predicate may be taken as intervening, but to do so would render the humour of the chapter too subtle for the average reader in Oshkosh for whom this book is evidently written.) Their family of three was perfect in every way, so when Millie turned five-years-old, Simon asked Daisy if they could try for another child. Daisy does not want another child, but she will not tell Simon why. Simon’s drinking has been a problem and it is only getting worse. As they argue on their way home from a party with friends where Simon has once again been drinking and out of control, they are in an auto accident that will change the happy little family of three forever. The Book of Lies provides fascinating insight into what it’s like living in both present day Guernsey and past, throughout the German Occupation (during World War II and also after the allies had won) and how the Channel Islands were perceived by other nations.
