About this deal

After the Horde leave with the Valkyries' horses, their first stop is to visit Mazda where he is being punished, cut off his chains, give him something to drink, and leave him a sword so that he may deal with his punisher. The bard, changed by his experience, composes a new style of saga, one with musical accompaniment, about it. Terry worked for many years as a journalist and press officer, writing in his spare time and publishing a number of novels, including his first Discworld novel, The Color of Magic, in 1983. In 1987, he turned to writing full time.

The Wizards of the Unseen University are in a bit of a panic about this. Destroying Cori Celesti will cause the magic of Discworld to cease holding together the Disc and it will be curtain for everyone. Lord Vetinari recruits Leonard of Quirm, who sets about designing the Discworld’s second known spacecraft, The Kite. This is powered by dragons and will slingshot around the world and land in the home of the Gods. Leonard of Quirm, Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson, and a very reluctant Rincewind are to be the pilots of the craft and they are launched on their mission to say the world, except unbeknown to them, they have an extra passenger on board. Shark tastes like piss" - in fact it does as the high urea content makes it almost inedible if it is not immediately skinned and processed/cured in some form. But at least they are just bored and not as boring as the real life equivalences in politics, so what lies closer than to replay some classic mythology as a real life RPG, the perfect hobby for silver barbarians with some terrorist attitude to go with a big, Discworld shattering bang. Because of the potentially ultra fatal consequences of their plan to reach immortality, or at least a satisfying end worthy of and close to each barbarians´ wet death dream, Vetinari unleashes Leonard of Quirms´ ingenuity what enables Rincewind, Carrot, and The Librarian to go one a, hopefully for the world, successful hellish road and air trip. The titular character refers to Cohen the Barbarian, who, along with his geriatric Silver Horde, has embarked on one final quest: To return the fire the First Hero stole from the Gods to give to mankind... with interest... in the form of a sled of explosives. The Discworld's Last Heroes plan to go out with a bang, and they've made sure to kidnap a minstrel tasked with composing a saga so their final deed won't be forgotten. In a nice touch, Pratchett has the Orangutan Librarian as the member of the crew who saves the day by flying the Kite and landing it. In the Roundworld, monkeys were the first animals and first primates in space (most died during or shortly after the flight). The story itself is short, but cute. Cohen and his horde of heroes are on a quest, and their heroic shenanigans might destroy the entire Discworld. A variety of familiar characters get involved in trying to prevent this and, naturally, Rincewind gets dragged into things against his will. Sort of.

In 2008, Harper Children's published Terry's standalone non-Discworld YA novel, Nation. Terry published Snuff in October 2011. While The Last Hero, A Discworld Fable, is Pratchett’s 27th Discworld book, the real HERO here is his collaborator Paul Kidby who provides a book full of illustrations. Hep fiyata dahil bunlar; bayiniz unutursa vermeyi isteyin yani.) Ancak burada istisnai bir durum söz konusu; orijinal bir eserin tahrifini açıklamak için karşılaştırmaya ve görsel veriye ihtiyacım var. O yüzden, oynatalım; Paul Kidby's cover drawing on the hardcover version of the Last Hero cover shows Cohen in a typical Conan pose, while the softcover version has Rincewind doing his rendition of Edvard Munch's painting The Scream. The heroes are disillusioned with the way their lives have turned out, and angry for having been allowed to grow old. Evil Harry is just as angry; despite his efforts to give his opponents the sporting chance as an Evil Overlord should, they won't follow the Code. There's really only enough material here for a short story, Discworld Lite, if you will, but there's still plenty to enjoy. Meeting the Gods was fun. I LOVE that there is a God of Unnecessary Paperwork and a Goddess of Certain Types of Ice Cream and Short Lengths of String. Meanwhile, the Horde have already reached Cori Celesti. The gods allow them to sneak in disguised as gods themselves, despite (or perhaps because of) their having been betrayed to the gods by Evil Harry. The Horde suspect that the gods have been manipulating their entire quest. Fate challenges Cohen to roll a 7 on a standard 6-sided die. Cohen cheats Fate by slicing the die in-half in mid-air with his sword; the two halves land with the 6 and 1 both facing up. Cohen also notes that even if he does not succeed in killing the gods, someone will have tried, so someone will eventually try harder.

The Horde's end is ambiguous. Valkyries come to take the heroes to the Halls of the Slain, where a feast has been prepared for them. Instead, the Silver Horde, refusing to accept their deaths, steal the valkyries' horses and set off to find other worlds to " do heroic stuff in." Death does not appear to them, as he often does when Discworld characters die, although he subsequently appears to Vena, and is evasive about whether he is " collecting". They've plundered, ravished and done all sorts of other things, ending up quite wealthy and ... bored. Carrot's lines, 'Second star to the left and straight on 'til morning?' are the directions to Neverland in James Barrie's Peter Pan. To which Rincewind replies, "Ithink that may very probably be the stupidest piece of astronavigatio ever suggested" followed by "we'd better not look down on the gods" which both agree would be difficult not to do - in both senses of the line.

Synopsis

He says we'll have to land soon,' said Carrot. 'Was there some position we're supposed to get into?' Lord Vetinari wishes to stop them, and recruits the help of the Wizards of Unseen University—all that can now prevent the world from being blown up is the crew of a swamp-dragon-powered-slingshot-spacecraft, consisting of its designer Leonard of Quirm, volunteer Captain Carrot, and involuntary volunteer Rincewind. It stars the legendary Cohen the Barbarian, a legend in his own lifetime. Cohen can remember when a hero didn’t have to worry about fences and lawyers and civilisation, and when people didn’t tell you off for killing dragons. But he can’t always remember, these days, where he put his teeth… The reference to the Virgin Islands in the home of the Gods is an obvious reference to the Caribbean Island group and also the concept that for followers of Islam, life in Heaven includes virgins (the common number of 72 is actually not specified anywhere in the Quran). It wonderfully caps Rincewind's series of adventures, neatly and directly tying up his Disc-spanning journey that began in the foundational The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic' Goodreads reviewer, ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

This volume is also one of the special ones illustrated throughout and, I think, the very first volume Paul Kidby was the artist for (after the death of Josh Kirby). So I enjoyed both the audio version (still not as good as Nigel Planer's reading, I can't emphasize this enough) as well as my print copy (Rincewind, by the way, is depicted too young in my opinion). The plot of Terry Pratchett’s 2001 The Last Hero, the 27 th of his Discworld books, has to do with Cohen the Barbarian and his Silver Horde — i.e., several very aged sword-and-berserking hooligans (think: the Rolling Stones with decorative armor and sharp steel) — seeking to return fire to the gods. The Kidby picture of the Gods playing with the human "heroes" on the game board is a classic Greco Roman style painting with typical Kidby extras thrown in: the Aztec figure, the Egyptian Crocodile and Cat, the skull in Blind Io's hand and the human figures like game pieces on a board game.
