I read on Wikipedia that the North American Raccoon is decended from the "Lesser Panda" (whatever that is) and crossed over the bearing strait into North America over a few million years ago, so it apparently shares much more of it's DNA with Panda bears than Cats or Dogs. That would explain the dark circles around the eyes. If you've ever seen a Raccoon's paws up close, they have highly articulated hands quite unlike the stubby paws of cats or dogs. The description of Tanuki is often a small dog that looks like a raccoon, which is pretty apt. They are small, fluffy, and chubby creatures that have facial features similar to a raccoon. Face Of The Tanuki Shares A Similar Appearance To The Common Canine Are Tanukis Real? Most of the tanuki statues found around Japan are Shigaraki-yaki (信楽焼), a type of ceramic ware made in the town of Koga in Shiga Prefecture. The town is famous for its kiln, being one of the six ancient kilns in Japan, as well as the ceramic pottery from the kiln. The common tanuki statues found in Japan is designed by Tetsuzo Fujiwara, a potter who moved to the area in 1936 and devoted the rest of his career to tanuki statuary. He “cutified” the tanukis from their evil look to an adorable creature. Supernatural tales of its shape-shifting and illusory skills abounded during this period, with the tanuki transforming into an eclectic cast of early modern characters. Beautiful young maidens who vanish in the morning after a night of passion, leaving their human lovers nothing but a pile of muddy, rotting leaves in their stead. Homely farmer’s wives. Burly drunkards swirling punches and smashing all before them in roadside inns. Terrifying one-eyed hags lurking by dark forest paths and, most anarchic of all in the rigid world of Shogunal Japan, fierce-browed government officials, pestering householders with imaginary tax demands. In 1795, one Nagasaki tanuki even transformed into a well-heeled samurai and sneaked into a brothel for a night’s extravagant carousing, his gold turning to dry leaves the next day. [7]This confusion is sometimes the source of great amusement. In Tochigi Prefecture, for example, the Tanuki is called "Mujina." In 1924, in the so-called Tanuki-Mujina Incident たぬき・むじな 事件 ( じけん ), Tochigi authorities prohibited the hunting of Tanuki and promptly arrested one hunter — who claimed he was out hunting mujina. The man was taken to trial, but eventually acquitted (on 9 June 1925). His defense argued that hunting of "mujina" was not prohibited by law, that the hunter's intention was to pursue mujina, and therefore, by law, he was not guilty of any offense. In this guide, we'll explain everything you need to know about Karakuri in Wild Hearts. We'll break down what they are, how to use them, and how to construct the various Karakuri that you'll need during combat. What are Karakuri in Wild Hearts? In many depictions of the Tanuki, they are seen holding a bottle of sake and a promissory note, both of which together symbolize fortune and trust. Tanuki Statue Seen Here Wearing A Wide Brimmed Hat Fusion Karakuri are larger structures that you can create by combining Basic Karakuri. To build them, you must place Basic Karakuri in a specific arrangement, at which point they will automatically transform into the Fusion Karakuri. This forest dog was first mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, a historical collection about the origins of Japan, dating from 720. The Tanuki also appeared on ancient medieval illustrated scrolls along with other yōkai such as the demon Tengu.
