About this deal

The Human Adventure—An all-new 8-part documentary detailing how the Director’s Edition came to life — NEW! Hot on the heels of the breaking news about Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Director’s Edition getting an unexpected facelift to 4K, Paramount Home Entertainment has formally announced the heavily-rumored addition of the first four Star Trek films to hit the Ultra-HD format as well! Those scenes have previously been available only on VHS, DVD, and in certain streaming-service presentations of the movie; this will be the first time the Star Trek VI director’s cut will be available in high definition on home media. The two remastered editions of of Star Trek VI is available in the 6-film box set or as a standalone 4K + Blu-ray release. The theatrical cut is also available as a standalone Blu-ray. While there’s been no formal announcement, the four films starring the Next Generation cast are expected to get the 4K upgrade next; if things follow the last two years, we should hopefully see them get their own 4K UHD Blu-ray box set by September 2023.

Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture became the fourth highest grossing movie of the year and earned three Academy Award® nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Music, Original Score. The film successfully launched the Star Trek franchise beyond the original television series, despite having been rushed to theaters with incomplete special effects and forced editing choices. Selected items are only available for delivery via the Royal Mail 48® service and other items are available for delivery using this service for a charge.but as soon as the false-detailed 2009 image is added into the mix, it’s clearly an overcorrection which makes Takei’s face look pitted, adding ten years to his age! Heavy false-sharpening processes resulted in 2009’s leathery facial features. These extras unfortunately feel a bit more generic and uninspired than those for the other films, though that’s probably because the film itself feels generic. Even so, there’s some good content here and certainly much of you’d want discussed is covered. Both commentaries are well worth your time. The Easter egg featurette from the 2002 Special Collector’s Edition DVD release has carried over too. Really the only thing that’s not included is the Okuda text commentary from the DVD, though the Library Computer feature mostly makes up for it.

Below, we’ve compared the HD master used for the 1999 DVD release with the 2009 and 2022 Blu-ray editions — the soft blue tones reflecting the Sha Ka Ree “god” remain, but the overall lighting levels have been reduced for a less-blinding experience. Somebody finally found the brightness dial on planet Sha Ka Ree. While some have commented that the 2022 versions seem to be “blurry,” well, that’s because the slightly soft nature of each film were shot that way in the original production! In any case, while Paramount’s new Original 4-Movie Collection can’t quite be called perfect, the studio has clearly made a significant effort (and spent a significant amount of money) to remaster these films for 4K Ultra HD and greatly-improved Blu-ray release. The result is pretty impressive, easily the best these films have looked since their original theatrical release. And if not quite every bonus feature from past disc releases has carried over here, most of that content certainly has, and the new isolated score on The Motion Picture is a gem. is a revelation compared to its previous bout on HD, being bright, detailed, well coloured and retaining a good grain structure, the image has never looked better. The sound has a very light upgrade to Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (from 5.1) but is still a bit front heavy, though dialogue and effects are well mixed and there is good bass. All the extras are ported over, but sadly nothing new has been added. Audio Commentaryfeaturing Michael & Denise Okuda, Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens, and Daren Dochterman

Star Trek Generations 4K Audio

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection gathers together the original classic films featuring the complete series cast. Some went on to appear in later Next Generation films, but this is where you can see everyone manning their stations aboard the Enterprise. While each successive film may vary in terms of ambition and execution, it's difficult to dispute the consensus that these films are incredibly entertaining voyages. Even when the franchise is at its lowest point, there's still a nugget of an interesting idea at the center compelling you to look past the goofiness. The final film proves to be a bittersweet but emotionally satisfying final send off for the crew of great actors who began their interstellar journey to seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no other television series had gone before. It’s undeniable that these are improved (even on the standard Blu-ray versions) over the 2009 masters though. The films all have a much more natural look to them and are rid of (invented) excess detail. The Star Trek Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection is available now from all retailers. If you’re looking to re-live the theatre experience of the original casts’ movies, you’re not going to get any closer than having the Star Trek 4K 6-Movie Collection editions with a good quality screen, some may argue it’s even an improved experience. Having only watched the Director’s Edition and Wrath of Khan re-release in cinemas this past summer in the UK I won’t make that claim on behalf of all of the films though. This exceptional collection includes four Ultra HD discs, as well as four remastered Blu-ray discs with hours of previously released bonus content. There will certainly be debates over “correct” color timing and lighting levels between the 2009 and the 2021/2022 editions of the original Star Trek films: each film does seem to have an issue with somewhat brighter-than-expected lighting levels, especially in space scenes, which seems to be a side effect from creating the remastered Blu-rays from 4K HDR sources.
