About this deal

Some overdrive pedals thrive when they’re playing with a tube amp that’s already on the edge of breakup. With the right settings, the best overdrive pedals can really get your amp singing. Some also pair incredibly well with other pedals – for example, a Tubescreamer feeding into a Klon style OD is a classic pedal combo. What is a transparent overdrive?

One awesome feature of the new Octavio is the ability to turn the “octave up” effect on and off, which doubles the effectiveness of the pedal. You can use this for super gnarly riffing, or use the octave-off mode as a “standard” fuzz pedal. The main difference is that, while a distortion pedal provides the same (or a similar) amount of distortion at any volume, an overdrive pedal reacts more like an old school tube amp - with the amount of gain and grit being dictated not only by the amount of gain you choose, but also by the input and output volume. What do you want to get from an overdrive? The Dude is sweet-sounding and very dynamic. The volume controls the output and gain, and a ratio knob blends in the overdriven sound with your clean tone. This means you’ve got a way of controlling how prevalent the gain is in your sound and makes for a really versatile feature. Then you’ve got separate controls for adjusting treble and bass, so more than enough to really dial in your tone to your liking. The TIM overdrive, designed and built by Paul Cochrane, has been successful because of it’s sheer handiness. It offered (past tense, it’s no longer made) a very malleable, adaptable overdrive that seemed to just fit into your sound and dirty it up a little, without overtly altering your hard-earned tone! Prized tonal properties like touch and dynamics were left unscathed, making this a valuable tool for players looking to retain the individual personality. But it doesn’t just stop there. In the circuit, the bass cut is placed before the clipping/gain stage and the treble cut is placed after the gain stage. This is different to most other pedals where the EQ section is always post-gain. What this means is that you can get an incredibly focused and tight-sounding drive by reducing the bass before it gets distorted, and you can avoid fizziness by having the treble cut after the distortion is applied. There's something inherently musical about the Timmy's brand of overdrive. It enhances the harmonic response of your amplifier, feeding it some extra juice that you can really lean into and dig in with. I bought a second-hand MXR Timmy overdrive pedal. It’s a mini-pedal, made in collaboration with Paul Cochrane, who used to hand-make the original Timmy pedals. Why Did You Buy It? There’s a reason the Tube Screamer is so popular, because it just sounds so good, and having an option that takes up half the space means you can have more space for different effects.
