I avoid synthetic fertilizers and choose organic, slow-release amendments with care. The Skyscraper Sunflower is an open-pollinated tall sunflower variety. This cultivar is a branching type that produces a host of blooms and large green leaves along its long main stalk, making them not only tall but also quite wide in the garden. Paul Bunyan’ sunflower– much like its folk hero namesake, this sunflower will grow into a giant, towering at 16 to 18 feet tall. The deep yellow flowers can reach up to 23 inches across. In addition to the native sunflowers that reseed themselves every year I think I’ll plant a few Mongolian Giants each summer.
