About this deal

As you can see, the performance is excellent in Performance mode. Quiet mode is also pretty decent. And as mentioned, there were no significant advantages of using a different RAM kit. And here’s how this Core i9-1198oHK configuration compares against other 8C/16T options on the market, both Intel and AMD. Excellent performance once undervolted, but very similar to the regular i9-11900H at same power. And the Legion also runs louder than the competition in this test. The overall feel of the laptop just oozes quality to me. I already liked the Legion 5 Pro for it’s solid build quality and this just feels even better. It’s a little heavier than I’m used to but still pretty easy to carry and the weight distribution is good. The Lenovo Legion 7i’s heat was congregated mostly near its hinge when we took its temperature, which was during the 11th of 15 consecutive Metro: Exodus benchmark runs set to the RTX preset. Temperatures topped out at 53.2 degrees Celsius (127.76 degrees Fahrenheit), with the hottest point on the laptop being the center of the hinge. Touchpoints such as the center of the keyboard (between the G and H keys) ran closer to 46.9 degrees Celsius (116.42 degrees Fahrenheit).

W (~6 h of use) – 165Hz, 1080p fullscreen video on Youtube in Edge, Quiet Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;The GeekBench 5 CPU stress test tells a similar tale, with the Legion 7 scoring 1,436 single-core and 7,322 multicore to the Core i9-powered M16’s 1,618 and 9,025. The difference between those productivity benchmark scores is like the difference between a 175mph Ferrari and a 185mph Lamborghini: indistinguishable and irrelevant in real-world use. My initial battery rundown test drained the Legion 7’s 78Wh cell in just 3hrs 25mins, which is absolutely dire. However, I then realised that the integrated AMD Vega GPU was turned off and with it Nvidia’s Optimus graphics switching system. All in all, the 2022 Legion 7i is an excellent performer and definitely a step-up from the previous 2021 generations. The culprit are the high CPU thermals in sustained loads, as well as to some extent the fact that this design is not as CPU-powerful as other Intel HX models from other brands. And here’s how the Intel and AMD models fare in comparison, on Performance and Quiet. Despite the fact that the Intel model runs at higher power at max and allows for undervolting, the performance is within 1-2% between the two, and that’s because the i9-11980HK cannot run at its full Turbo Boost all-core speeds at 90W on the Legion 7i, but the Ryzen 9 5900HX can run at its maximum potential on the Legion 7 at 78W. Of course, the maximum potential of the R9 is lower than that of the i9, and hence the tie between the two implementations. These are the results with Vantage set to Balanced, a mid-level profile with quieter fans and only slightly limited power settings: Balanced Mode

Not a lot changes over the default Performance profile, but the GPU scores do improve by 2-7% in some of the tests. Cinema-like gaming moves into the next decade with a 16" QHD gaming display on a laptop. Enjoy QHD resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, a 16:10 aspect ratio with best-in-class color accuracy and high dynamic range. On the other hand, this 16Core i9 implementation is no match for other Intel or AMD current platforms. For what is worth, the Ryzen 9 6900HX Legion 7 should also score around 2400 points in this test, so nowhere close to the Intel HX models. A comparison between the Ryzen 9 6900HX and the Core i9-12900H processor si available here. So on this AMD model, the average CPU temperatures were a little higher in Performance and Balanced modes than on the Intel mode, but the CPU spikes were the same. Noise levels in Performance and Balanced modes were consistent across both models, as well. W (~3 h 33 min of use)– heavy browsing in Chrome, Better Performance Mode, screen at 50%, Wi-Fi ON;Far Cry 5, 6, Metro, Red Dead Redemption 2, Tomb Raider games – recorded with the included Benchmark utilities;
