In Le Havre, a player’s turn consists of two parts: First, distribute newly supplied goods onto the offer spaces; then take an action. As an action, players may choose either to take all goods of one type from an offer space or to use one of the available buildings. Building actions allow players to upgrade goods, sell them or use them to build their own buildings and ships. Buildings are both an investment opportunity and a revenue stream, as players must pay an entry fee to use buildings that they do not own. Ships, on the other hand, are primarily used to provide the food that is needed to feed the workers. Entering a Building: Most of the building cards allow visitors to take an action, (e.g. to build additional buildings) or to convert standard goods to upgraded goods. To use a building's action, a player must enter the building; that is, move her Person disc to an unoccupied building. The round ends after seven turns: a Harvest increases your grain and cattle reserves, and it is time for you to feed your workers. After a fixed number of rounds, each player takes one final action, and then the game ends. Players add the value of their buildings and ships to their cash reserves. The player with the largest fortune is the winner. At its heart, Le Havre is an economic worker placement, city-building game. In theory, it’s fairly straightforward to grasp. On your turn, your ship chugs its way to the next available supply tile spot, left-to-right across the board. The stated goods on the supply tile – ranging from a combination of fish to steel to clay to cattle, among others – are added to their corresponding jetties.

Collect resources to build and use new buildings, while paying your workers and saving up for ships. Buildings are a good investment, but ships provide necessary income. Deciding where to put your resources early on may determine your fate later in the game, so choose wisely! Goods in a player's supply have no value (exception: the Storehouse). If there is a tie, there are several winners. No, if you want to be able to read the cards, handle lots of quality game pieces, and prefer in-person interactions. The fourth and fifth lines show which Ship card will be introduced to the game when the Round card is turned over: for example, "2" and "Wood" means a Wooden ship with a value of 2 Francs. The number of rounds to be played depends on how many players are in the game and which version of the game you are playing: full or shortened. The number varies from 4 (1 player, shortened version) to 20 (4 or 5 players, full version). Final stage Le Havre provides a very satisfying gaming experience for someone who likes economic strategies. The variety of possible tactics used by players and combinations of the cards is so rich the game does not become dull even after you have played it several times. There are no clear instructions on how to win the game: even for an experienced player every turn of Le Havre holds so many possibilities the best one is never obvious.

I want to find a light game that my girl friend and I can play together so we can get a break from Carcassonne.You also might grimace at the ‘Now it’s time to feed your workers!’ line. However, this feels less punishing than in Agricola. Engines are gradually introduced that allow you to convert goods into a pantry-load of food. You’ll still get that nagging klaxon in the latter part of the game that there are now only a limited number of rounds left for you to achieve everything. It’s not there throughout, though, not to the point where it’s constantly prodding you, like in Agricola. Rosenberg’s farming classic is more a case of damage limitation (collect everything… or else!). Le Havre was designed to improve the Agricola experience for players who find it too easy. Also, in Le Havre less is left to the chance. The real beauty of this version is the ability to play many different scenarios that may not be available to you in person. 1-5 players means you can play against a mix of up to 4 other AI or human players. The local mode (as opposed to the online mode) allows you to play with humans next to you using the same device as well as additional AI players. You can choose the short version of the game (which I highly recommend for your first game), you can adjust the AI difficulty for each player, and there are several options to make the game experience enjoyable and evenly-paced. The only option not available is the ability to play with more than 1 human on the same tablet while having another play in online mode. In addition to the Supply and Main actions, a player can buy one or more Building and/or Ship cards at any time during his own turn (even before taking the Supply action or Main action). There are two stages in the game: Round stage and Final stage. Each round consists of 7 turns (so, during one round different players make different numbers of turns). It can take several rounds to really get going and you do get to a point where you’re thinking “I have a ton of resources but I can’t do anything because I have to feed my bleeping workers!!!!” It’s part of the game and evens out to be very satisfying, but the beginning can be a bit slow.
