About this deal

Jaime's] stories never fail to entertain, but their claim on literature is due to Hernandez's bracing realism. His virtuoso drawings present characters of intelligence, wit, and human frailty who confront each other—and the reader—with such honesty and genuine tenderness that one may find it hard to believe she/he is reading a comic book.” Publishers Weekly Jaime Hernandez grew up in Oxnard, California. [2] He is the youngest of his family, with four older brothers and one sister. [3] His family embraced comics: their mother read them frequently and old issues were kept in large quantities in the house, to be read and re-read by all over the years. [3] "We grew up with comics," Hernandez said. "I wanted to draw comics my whole life." [4] a b c Art Baxter. "Locas: The Maggie And Hopey Stories by Jaime Hernandez". National Association of Comics Art Editors. Archived from the original on 15 November 2018 . Retrieved 6 September 2011. Fritz, Petra, Venus: Fritz and Petra are Luba's long-lost half-sisters who share her voluptuous figure and penchant for adventure. Venus is Petra's precocious, comics-loving daughter.

After having read through this whole book again just now, I’ll just run through some notable aspects that stand out to me in these stories: is it bad to say that I want more Hopey and Maggie? I wish we had seen more of them, but I suppose a lot of it was supposed to be how they drifted apart and still managed to find each other at the end. But it was just frustrating since they were amazing together as individuals, let alone when they were dating. I also wanted a bit more detail on their lives apart with more focus, rather than that rotating point of view. Nericcio, William (December 1995). "Artif[r]acture: Virulent Pictures, Graphic Narrative and the Ideology of the Visual". Mosaic. University of Manitoba. 28 (4): 79–109. Esperanza Leticia "Hopey" Glass: sharp-tongued, wild and adventurous best friend of Maggie. A lesbian who plays bass in a series of punk bands, often touring and furthering her adventures/story. Heraclio and Carmen: a loving couple who served as central characters for many early Palomar stories.Tonta and her friends Chata and Moses at a performance by her favorite punk band, Ooot; from Jaime Hernandez’s graphic novel Tonta Heartbreak Soup – first Palomar story. Tells the story of notorious ladies' man Manuel, and his affair with beautiful 14-year-old Pipo, and its effect on his friendship with repressed misanthrope Soledad. Slightly more inconsistent than his brother's 80s-alt-comics magnum opus--it took him time to find his voice--but far more dear to me. This is the one I'll pull out at midnight and read till dawn, the one that has me missing a youth I _wish_ I could have lived, despite how clearly he paints its downsides. These multiethnic sexually various growing-up punks and their friends and their Archie-gone-wrong relationships are more real to me than some of my actual friends, and every time I read the later portions I see all the compromises of age bearing down on me. In an interview with The Comics Journal, Hernandez admitted he'd had difficulty aging his characters, because while he'd known girls like Maggie and Hopey when he was young, he'd never known them long enough to find out what they did in adulthood. Jaime Hernandez' work always inspires. Real characters, magical worlds, bold art. As a student filmmaker his creations helped me to understand visual storytelling."
