About this deal

Other than that, this set of colored pencils behave s pretty much similar to any other oil-based colored pencil. Its feeling is silky , and the blends are more realistic than the ones created with waxed-based colors. Then, there are watercolor pencils where the binder is water-soluble, and the pigments can mix with water. They contain a dry watercolor pigment, which can be used along with water and brushes. But having these specific values is only the first step. There are a variety of different methods for grading lightfastness. And depending on which brand you are looking at or even which model from a specific brand you are looking at, the particular grading scale that they use may differ. In addition, some brands have come up with their internal grading system. Talk about confusing!

And even soft colored pencil people often add a few firm pencils to their projects. I may color the leaf with soft Derwent Lightfast pencils but then add fine veins with a firm Caran d’Ache Pablo. And I frequently use Pablos to crisp up the edge of something that’s looking mushy in Prismacolor. The durability of the lead is also better than wax-based pencils because oil is a stronger binder. There will be no chipping or breaking after sharpening. Chalk-pastel colored pencils are significantly different in experience from conventional colored pencils based on wax or oil. The powdery nature of the colors makes blending way more fun. These are some of the smoothest colored pencils we have come across. The application is extremely buttery and soft and they are a lot of fun to experiment with. That being said, they do struggle a little bit in keeping a sharp point due to being so soft which can make them a bit challenging to use in areas that require close detail. The colors are vibrant, and the pigments are soft and produce an even tone, which is great for blending.Holbein offers about 18 browns and beiges which run from warm red browns to cool chocolate umbers. A nice selection. A fair competition to Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils set is LYRA Rembrandt Polycolor Art Pencils. These are also oil-based colored pencils but these offer a different set of pros & cons compared to the aforementioned brand. In our experience, we couldn’t help but draw parallels between brushes and these pencils. And don’t worry, the lacquer covering is great at preventing the colors from spreading and making it all messy. Holbein bodies are fully coated with a gloss lacquer giving them an almost a silky feel. It’s very nice and not as slippery as I expected. As I said, I love my pencils soft and buttery but that’s my personal preference. Soft pencils fit my style of coloring well. But I don’t recommend soft pencils for everyone and I don’t recommend them for every project.

But this argument becomes a little redundant because the pencils are also sold individually but at an extra charge. An extremely unique way to use colored pencils is by using them in a combination with other mediums, especially, watercolors. For those who are looking for colored pencils capable of such artistry, we have brought you Creative Art’s Materials colored pencils. The lightfastness and the permanence of the colors are also quite satisfactory. Although , we don’t recommend this to professional artists who need it to be pitch-perfect. Originally, The Art Gear Guide and COLORED PENCIL Magazine had arranged to feature the Holbein Artists Colored Pencils in the August issue, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Holbein review had to be temporarily put on hold. Despite this, I have finally got round to reviewing the Holbein colored pencil, so here it is and I hope it has been worth the delay.

Holbein Origins

These artist-grade colors can be more expensive as they contain more pigment and are of higher quality. Durability Today, there are woodless colored pencils that can last for 100 years. But, please remember that the colors are susceptible to breaking or chipping in the long run. This is especially true for thin wooden pencils. So, make sure that you keep them properly and do not drop them off often. IMPORTANT: If you’re someone who can’t stand to sharpen pencils because you hate wasting pencil lead— DO NOT BUY HOLBEIN PENCILS! I have never blown through this much pencil length with any other brand. These pencils disappear fast! Holbein Artists Colored Pencils Before reading this review, I would like to inform you that as of November 27th it was brought to my attention that the Holbein Colored Pencils have not been fully tested for sale in the US. Not a hard, crumbly, brittle pencil, but something oil based and stiffer. The firmer the pencil, the more control you’ll get from it.
