About this deal

When I was a teenager, the idea of having your period was something only discussed between close friends and sisters, and only in hushed tones where no one would overhear. There was a lot of shame associated with what is a normal bodily function that happens in a huge part of the human population. I can't imagine growing up in a world where I didn't feel embarrassed about my period. A world where it's just everyday life, and where we speak with each other candidly about it. That's the world of Go With The Flow, a new graphic novel for young women that teaches them that periods are normal, and that girls deserve reproductive equity. aFemale friendship |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh96004236 |vComic books, strips, etc. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001401 aSocial acceptance |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85123905 |vComic books, strips, etc. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001401 i139677045 |b1240040041014 |dssggn |g- |m |h2 |x0 |t0 |i0 |j18 |k210811 |n10-21-2021 16:28 |o- |aFIC WIL

Everything is appropriately tinted in a shade of red or pink. The girls’ personalities are expertly portrayed through facial expressions and body language. And there are some scenes that just resonate better as an image. Reading about Sasha getting her period all over white pants in front of everyone is one thing. But actually seeing the confusion and embarrassment on her face and tears in her eyes evokes a whole new sense of empathy – empathy that’s needed if we’re ever going to stop treating those who are menstruating like they’ve done something wrong or committed some grave offense.

As one of the characters says, “Fifty percent of the population gets a period… but it’s like this HUGE secret we can’t talk about?” This book would not have existed several years ago. This warm, candid friendship story isn’t shy about the message it’s trying to send—that periods need not be a dirty secret." The two friends are less well-developed. Christine is the blunt truth-teller. One of the many sub-plots involves her guy study buddy trying to ask her out (and being a typically idiotic adolescent boy about it), while she seems to prefer Abby. That latter part comes late in the book and isn’t sufficiently established for me to know exactly what was going on there. i144834480 |b1230003579292 |dtlwyg |g- |m |h2 |x1 |t1 |i0 |j93 |k221220 |n04-10-2023 17:28 |op |aYA FIC WILLIAMS

This period-positive story is fantastic. . . . A great read for pre-teens and teens who love realistic graphic novels like those by Raina Telgemeier and Teri Libenson.” i135110075 |b1440003006415 |dbajgn |g- |m |h7 |x1 |t2 |i0 |j128 |k210115 |n06-29-2023 18:19 |o- |aJGN WIL aGo with the flow / |c[written by] Lily Williams & Karen Schneemann ; [illustrated by Lily Williams ; colors by Kaley Bales, Lily Williams, and Karen Schneemann] aHigh schools |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85060731 |vComic books, strips, etc. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001401 I loved this story of friendship, solidarity, and sisterhood. I also love the way this book promotes open discussion of periods. It’s nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. As Abby points out, half of their school menstruates. Maybe it’s time we have some dialogue around this and ensure that basic humanitarian needs of all students at all income levels in all areas are met. I think tweens and teens will like this book, but I also think it will be appreciated and embraced by adults as well.aMenstruation |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85083604 |vComic books, strips, etc. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001401 Today, I’ll be reviewing a very timely new graphic novel, Go With The Flow by Lily Williams & Karen Schneemann.
