The collection contains five classic stories, 'Terror of the Autons', 'The Mind of Evil', 'The Claws of Axos', 'Colony in Space' and 'The Daemons', which first aired in 1971. It has been a ten long months since the last release in the Doctor Who: The Collection range. (Made even longer by a missed postman and delayed redelivery.) Season 14 was another triumph headlined by the tear-jerking documentary ‘ Our Sarah Jane‘. So can Season 8 compete with the previous releases particularly when hampered by a global pandemic?

Just curious as to why Inferno, Colony and the Time Monster looked noticeably better than these two episodes using the same technique if any one can shed any light on this? For example, Tomorrow's Times: The Sixth Doctor, originally included on the Vengeance on Varos Special Edition DVD, was included instead on the Bluray release of Season 23. Most notably, Coming Soon trailer for at-the-time forthcoming DVD releases of serials have been moved to the disc for the preceding story. For example, the trailer for The E-Space Trilogy box set, originally included on the DVD release for Battlefield, is included in the Season 18 set on the disc for Meglos.The original VHS releases of Terror of the Autons and The Dæmons were among the first to be colourised (along with The Silurians) by merging B/W film recordings with NTSC offair VHSs. In the US, sets typically release a few months after the UK release, with the exception of seasons 12, 19 and 18 which were released closer to, or in some cases before, the UK release. This nine-disc box set also includes hours of special features previously released on DVD including Documentaries, Featurettes, Audio Commentaries, The Five Doctors Special Edition and more.

A colourful adventure with some hideous monstrosities, both alien and the Whitehall “England for the English” types. There is also an opportunity to watch an extended version of Episode 1. The additional scenes don’t particularly add much to the story but they are nice to have reinstalled. If you are so inclined then the full studio recording session is also available to watch at your leisure. All of the episodes have been newly remastered for the boxset and the collection also contains an impressive range of exclusive special features, including new episodes of Behind the Sofa with Manning, Stewart Bevan (Professor Clifford Jones), Janet Fielding (Tegan Jovanka), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Sacha Dhawan (The Master) and Anjli Mohindra (Rani Chandra). Coming Soon: The Android Invasion/Invasion of the Dinosaurs removed; likely to appear on Seasons 11 and/or 13. Due to authoring errors, replacement discs were made available for seasons 12 and 18 to correct audio mixing issues. Reissues of these sets included the replacement discs. I’ve never been much of a fan of ‘ Colony in Space‘. It’s a depressing story, set on a depressing planet which is again drawn out across two episodes more than it needed to be. Watching it in high definition doesn’t make it much better. On the plus side the previously cut shot of a violent blow to the head of a primitive can now be seen within the context of an earlier edit of Episode Two.
