About this deal

Macduff distillery, located on the far Eastern region of Speyside, was designed by distillery architect William Delmé-Evans, who had a forward-thinking “concern for energy efficiency and conservation” in his plans. Macduff began distilling whisky in 1960 (but for some reason a couple of books I’ve read state 1962). At some point Diageo’s predecessor, DCL, had already bagged the Macduff trademark, which led to the development of Glendeveron or Glen Deveron. Though originally the Macduff spirit was destined for blends, the Glen Deveron range – which was later under the ownership of William Lawson Distillers (who were in turn owned by Bacardi) – proved to be popular as single malts in Italy and France. (Due to corporate acquisitions and mergers in the late 1990s, Bacardi had replaced the Lawson name – and in 1995 Macduff became part of Dewar’s.) Sometimes a week goes by in which one has managed to not consume an interesting, exciting, or controversial single malt to tell the world about. During such weeks, it’s my wont to dig into the “archives” (by which I mean my scrap bin) to drag out some scribbles on a malt that nobody cares about, and that everyone will continue not caring about once I’ve had my say. Not until now have we had a range of original distillery bottlings to explore, The Deveron core range has been launched with 3 expressions which will It should be known that Macduff distillery is no little artisan whisky-maker. It pumps out a mighty 2,400,000 litres of spirit a year, and uses two wash stills and three spirit stills, which is a rather unusual set-up. Equally as interesting, as Tom points out in his write-up of the distillery, there are upward-tilting condensers reaching out from the wash stills. (Pure whisky nerdism, but you don’t see it very often.) Each expression has been launched in selected markets around the world including Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Taiwan, United States and United Kingdom. The distillery uses a combination of sherry and ex-bourbon casks for its Deveron malts, and bottles at the watery anemic abhorrent standard minimum strength of 40% ABV.

Palate: Moderate body, almost but not quite syrupy. Barky, with a bunch of weirdly bitter cork notes, verging on fungal. Brown sugar, marzipan, maple sugar candies, thin pale malt.

In 1972, Macduff was acquired by William Lawson Distillers Ltd. which became part of the Martini & Rossi corporation in 1980. [3] But, I really felt this should have been bottled at 43% ABV – and it’s not often I say that as I’m quite happy with the lower strength whiskies given enough time in the mouth. It wasn’t keen to share its identity with me. It’s like speaking to someone at a party, but they ask all the questions of you and you never get to know much about them. This whisky still feels like a stranger. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. In 1972, William Lawson Distillers acquired the distillery and eight years later they, in turn, were acquired by Martini Rossi. During William Lawson’s tenure, they established Macduff as a component of the William Lawson blend, a very popular Scotch whisky which sells in excess of fifteen million bottles yearly. Indeed, Macduff whisky has long since been used as a blending product. Despite this, Macduff is still bottled as a single malt, though sometimes under the name Glen Deveron. The distillation process and its unconventional condensers are arranged for a light, fruity spirit and only Spanish sherry and American ex-bourbon oak casks, mainly hogsheads, are used for maturing The Deveron single malt. The specially selected casks impart depth to the delicate spirit, granting it a more rounded and smoother character. The result is a smooth, easy drinking dram with apple notes, dried fruits and nuts. John Dewar & Sons has now launched The Deveron single malt whisky range which is the fifth and final Dewar's owned single malt to join their The Deveron is a line of single malts produced at the Macduff distillery in Speyside. The name “Macduff” appears on independent bottlings, while variations on “Deveron” are used for official releases. Why? I’m too apathetic about this malt to find out. Probably it doesn’t matter. At some point in the hazy last few years the owners of Macduff distillery (John Dewar & Co. which is in turn owned by Bacardi) rebranded the official line from “Glen Deveron” to “The Deveron” and relaunched a core range at ages 10, 12, 18, and mumblemumble. Why drop the “Glen”? Again, no idea. The distillery had been slowly expanding in terms of production throughout its life and its Italian owner upped the number of stills to five in 1990. By then a range of single malts had been released, all under the name Glen Deveron.Even the most ardent whisky connoisseurs amongst you could be forgiven for not recognising The Deveron name as a single malt, as it differs from most other Scotch single malt whiskies in that it isn't named after the distillery it was produced in.
