Please note these weights are just for the microphone and they don’t include the mount, etc. The objective is to match the output level of the D3 Pro with your camera audio input settings. This will give you a bit of headroom to avoid clipping and distortion while still having some latitude with the mic’s gain knob to boost or lower the input gain.
With that advice, the shorter D3 might be better if you’re recording in a small domestic room with reflective walls. Above you can hear a comparison between the Comica CVM-VM20 and the RØDE VideoMic NTG when outputting an audio signal to a RØDE Wireless GO.
How do I know when the D3 Pro needs charging?
If you run out of electrical juice the battery will be fully charged in just under 2 hrs using the USB C charging cable. So if you’re going to be shooting every weekday for around 8 hours each day, a single AAA alkaline battery should last you about a month.
There is a simple button on the microphone that you press to activate these low-cut filters. A blue LED indicates which one has been selected. If the blue LED is off the no low-cut filter has been selected. Adjustable Stepless Gain Control A standard Alkaline AAA Battery will give you 166hrs of power. A little less from a NiMH Rechargeable Battery at around 150hrs. And 208hrs from a Lithium AAA Battery.
Conclusion
It can reduce 12-48V phantom power down to 3V for microphones with 3.5mm TRS connectors to run off Plug-In Power. Unfortunately, it’s the internal rechargeable battery that slightly lets down this mic. In comparison, the rechargeable battery on the Rode Videomic Pro+ lasts 100hrs and can be swapped out for a pair of alkaline AA batteries. There is an OLED display on the CVM-VM20 but all it does is to show you a battery indicator. I can’t complain though, because the RØDE VideoMic NTG doesn’t have a battery indicator, it just has a single LED light that changes colors depending on the battery life. USB-C Interface Ideally, you don’t want to lose any of the sounds you are recording. But you might want to turn on the low-cut filter if you are recording somewhere that has a lot of low-frequency rumbles. That might be traffic rumble from a nearby street, roadworks, fans, and AC units.
It does work reasonably well and it is quite sturdy, but it doesn’t have as much suspension movement as a Rycote.
Why does my Deity D3 Pro mic turn off after 15-min?
If you are a commercial videographer on a budget, a YouTube Creator or vlogger these microphones are for you. Despite the Comica CVM-VM20 Shotgun Microphone having a host of features, it is missing a few things: The Deity D3 and D3 Pro not only sound great but they’re also some of the more rugged on-camera mics around. Their mic tubes are made from aluminum alloy, unlike many of their rivals who opt for plastic in their mic’s construction. As I have already mentioned, it is the versatility of the microphone that is undoubtedly its biggest selling point. Being able to use it for so many applications makes it a very useful audio product to have in your kit. In saying that, it really needs to have a USB audio out to compete against microphones like the RØDE VideoMic NTG. What’s Missing?
The D-XLR is designed to have a 3.5mm TRS standard wired input. So, many other 3.5mm standard TRS microphones will work with it. Which version should you buy?
Swiss Army Knife microphones
A good place to start is to set the gain knob to 6, which represents a gain boost of +12dB. If you are a Lumix user, you might find this gives you too hot an input signal. If that’s the case initially try a setting of 3 on the dial, which means +6dB.
