About this deal

You could be forgiven for thinking that there are only three types of Tit in the UK as the Blue Tit, Coal Tit and Great Tit seem to get all of the attention. However, this would be wrong. There are, in fact, seven types of Tit and other varieties include the Crested Tit, the Marsh Tit, the Willow Tit, and the Long-Tailed Tit. There is also the Bearded Tit, but despite its name, the Bearded Tit isn’t a true tit, therefore we’re not covering it in this article. Sunflowers – These provide an oil rich seed for small birds such as the Nuthatch and Long Tailed Tits. They also provide a bit of colour in the garden. My young daughters came home from school with some sunflower seeds to grow as a project. They were so easy to grow but we lost a bit of momentum and allowed them to dwindle before they reached maturity. Females lay their eggs one a day, for as long as it takes. It’s a marathon mission and blue tits need to be in top condition to get through it. There are many deterrents on the market, that can be used with varying degrees of success, to create a cat-free zone in your garden. We have tested and approved the Catwatch deterrent. When the sensor inside detects movement it emits a high-pitched sound disliked by most cats (but inaudible to humans). The frequency emitted is unique to cats hearing range, so the Catwatch won't bother other garden wildlife, such as hedgehogs. Some good bird food to use at feeders for attracting Crested Tits are Live Mealworms, Insect and Mealworm Suet Pellets and Seed Feeder Mix.

It can, however, take time for birds to be comfortable with any new additional to their environment. It can be hit and miss from year to year. Hopefully the information in this post will help you to get it right. Should I Put Anything In My Bird Box? The same steps can be taken to clean bird baths and water stations. If your bird bath is a heavy, permanent fixture, tip or scoop the old water out before cleaning and rinsing out thoroughly. The best thing to do is to is leave suitable material near to the nest. What Nesting Material Do Garden Birds Like? However, the most important factor to consider is bird safety. Is the feeder safe for birds to use? With no points where birds’ feet could get trapped? What bird food do you need for your bird feeder? And, if you have squirrels or cats in your garden, what is the best feeder to keep your bird food and birds safe? All RSPB bird feeders are designed with bird safety in mind. Read on to learn more about the different options available. Seed feedersWe set up three identical feeding stations comprising of a hanging fat ball feeder without perches, hung from a pole, and started feeding the birds with our previous Best Buy fat balls to get them used to the feeding stations. Ground feeding birds will often be found near to a hanging feeder or bird table, collecting the food that falls to the ground below. You will find that the usual Great Tits, Blue Tits, Green Finches, Robins and others will also feed from the ground, if that is where the food is. Most blue tits don’t migrate and will instead stay close to where they hatched, even in the harshest of winters. On the 22nd morning there was no activity toward the box and I presumed that the youngs had fled. Later in the afternoon, one of the adults appeared making multiple visits to the box but not actually going in, just hopping from the hedge (2ft away) to the outside of the box, making chirping noises. I assume it was coaxing the last fledging out… this behaviour lasted about 2 hours. The adult bird then disappeared and I thought that that was the last visit to the nest. I cautiously looked into the box which at first appeared empty. On more careful inspection, I found 2 possibly three new tiny babies, just hatched.

Have you ever wondered how all of that additional food might be affecting wild birds? How much has our generosity changed their natural diet, and what of the bird species we don’t see visiting garden feeders? If you want to start feeding birds in your garden, or even from an apartment balcony, it can be a great hobby. If you put some suitable bird food out, the birds will come. It might take a while but they will come. The main thing to know is which type of wild bird feeder is best in your situation. Great Tits are closer to Blue Tits in their diet than Coal Tits and love to forage for insects, caterpillars, spiders, earthworms, flies and moths. When feeding caterpillars to their young, they actually remove the intestines first, rather like your fishmonger gutting a fish! Siriwardena, G. M. 2004. Possible roles of habitat, competition and avian nest predation in the decline of the Willow Tit Parus montanusin Britain. Bird Study51: 193–202. Peanuts. Peanuts are a favourite food and will be readily taken at any time of year. We need to be careful about offering these around nesting time though.

Caged Feeders, such as the excellent Tom Chambers feeders, add a cage so the squirrels can't get to the food. This is an excellent option, although it adds some bulk and you may find juvenile squirrels still get through.Although many people will be unwilling to reduce bird feeding, others can make informed choices on the necessity and impact around sensitive habitats. If a modest proportion of us stopped or reduced direct feeding, and instead, for example, donated the money to conservation organisations for restoring habitats, that could be a positive change. The farmland and carbon used for bird-food production and transportation could be spared and more species could benefit from habitat creation, while those of us with access to nature outdoors could continue enjoying wildlife. People with limited mobility or greater need could continue to enjoy bird feeding, while the overall impact would be reduced.

They particularly like areas with scattered trees, but will also happily set up home on farms and wetlands, where they can find plentiful food. A preference for such conditions explains why Eurasian blue tits limit themselves to Europe and western Asia. One important indirect effect could be increased competition for species that do not commonly use feeders themselves but co-exist alongside those that benefit from bird feeding. Since the 1960s, abundance of Blue Tits and Great Tits in Britain has increased by a respective 24% and 89%, and they reach higher densities in our woodlands than almost anywhere else in Europe (Cramp & Perrins 1993). Britain is a paradise for these two species, where we not only provide them with vast amounts of easy food but also with millions of nestboxes. What does this mean for the other species that share their habitat with these subsidised birds? Toy stuffing – I have read elsewhere that an old, cut open stuffed toy nailed to the fence or nearby tree is a good idea. Birds will make good use of the stuffing to insulate their nest. This is a very busy time for blue tits. It’s the mating season. They will be building nests and laying eggs.Include some sunflower hearts and mealworms in your feeders to attract a wider range of garden birds. How we tested fat balls for feeding birds
