In one four-week study, 72 women with hot flashes took either a placebo or a capsule containing 330 mg of anise seed three times daily. Those taking anise experienced a nearly 75% reduction in severity and frequency of hot flashes ( 12). Aniseed, which is used as a spice and as a medicine, has a sweet liquorice-like taste. It is of the Apiaceae family, which makes it a relative of other plants like celery, dill, coriander, fennel and cumin.

Star anise has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years and has also been accepted into some Western medicine practices more recently. For example, if a recipe requires 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of anise extract, you can swap in 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) of anise oil or 2 teaspoons (8 grams) of ground anise seed. One study found that an essential oil comprised of 81% anethole, the active ingredient in anise, helped prevent bone loss and protect against osteoporosis in rats ( 14). The flavor and aroma of its seeds have similarities with some other spices and herbs, such as star anise, [4] fennel, licorice, and tarragon. It is widely cultivated and used to flavor food, candy, and alcoholic drinks, especially around the Mediterranean. Boztaş, G., & Bayram, E. (2020). Western researchers have also found that anise can reduce stomach acid in rats and protect the stomach lining against damage. But we need more research to understand how well anise works in human stomachs. A separate study revealed star anise extract to be somewhat effective in reducing the growth of E. coli on a petri dish, though it wasn’t as effective as current, more common antibiotic treatments ( 13). Anise seed, oil and extract can all bring a burst of flavor to baked goods and candies or enhance the aroma of soaps and skin creams.
