About this deal

If you have an iPhone or iPad with a Lightning port, you will need the RØDE SC15 or SC19 (note: standard USB-C to Lightning cables will not work). Like its predecessor and the smaller Videomicro, there’s no battery in the Go II, with the mic instead powered directly by your camera or USB connection. In contrast the Pro+ and NTG both use built-in batteries, which are charged over USB. Rode has also kept things simpler than the higher-end models by not including any physical controls on the Go II, but that doesn’t mean it misses out on some of their more advanced configuration options.

If you have a device with a USB-C input, such as an Android smartphone or iPad Pro, you will need a USB-C to USB-C cable like the RØDE SC16 or SC17.The Rode Connect software allows you to mix and stream but also record multiple microphones in a true multichannel mix It’s not that surprising, though. The microphones themselves, each put out different audio levels over 3.5mm TRS. The VideoMicro is the quietest and the VideoMic NTG is the loudest with the VideoMic GO II sitting somewhere in between but leaning closer to the VideoMic NTG. The VideoMic NTG is mostly only the winner here because it has that built-in dial that lets you boost the gain by up to 15dB for a much stronger signal to noise ratio and doesn’t really need any boost in post. Rode has given the VideoMic Go II a new acoustic design that we’ve previously seen with the Rode VideoMic NTG and NTG 5 microphones. It features annular line tube technology which is claimed to enable unmatched transparency and rich sound.

Wind noise aside, the VideoMic GO II did a great job recording minor sounds outside, such as chains rattling and even the footsteps of different people walking past the camera. This is where things get quite interesting. Because now the VideoMic GO II gets much more power available to it over that USB cable and as a result gains a number of features found in the VideoMic NTG through its external buttons. and USB-C: There’s a 3.5mm TRS connection to use with cameras and a USB output for connecting to mobile devices and computers No battery required: The microphone is host-powered, so there’s no need to charge a battery and it’s always ready for use

Three Panasonic G80 (G85 for folks in the USA) holding the Rode VideoMicro, VideoMic GO II and VideoMic NTG You can adjust the VideoMic GO II’s input gain using RØDE Connect, RØDE Central and RØDE Reporter, as well as most third-party software and apps that have a level control (if you are using software or an app without a level control or that does not interface with the VideoMic GO II and would like to adjust your input gain, use RØDE Central). This is useful when recording particularly loud sound source that is distorting the microphone’s preamp (for example, if you are recording a podcast and your mouth is close to the microphone). Using the level peak warning LED on the side of the microphone is an easy way to tell if the input level is too high. You can use the GO II as an on-camera mic or via USB with your smartphone or computer. (Image credit: Rod Lawton/Digital Camera World) The higher-end Videomic NTG is unsurprisingly better-featured with a fuller sound, physical controls, safety channel and adjustable gain, but the Go II does offer some adjustments via Rode’s app and is loud enough to keep most camera pre-amps nice and low. With the mic facing forwards, the USB port is on the right of the barrel while the 3.5mm port is on the left. Dedicated grips in the base of the mount are intended to enable the cables to be kept out of the way, but they’re a bit fiddly to use with the supplied SC14 3.5mm TRS to TRS cable.

How does it sound on the camera?

When used with a computer, the VideoMic GO II works as a fully functional USB microphone, complete with headphone monitoring using the 3.5mm output. To connect the VideoMic GO II to your computer, you will need a USB-C to USB-C cable like the RØDE SC16 or SC17, or a USB-C to USB-A cable like the RØDE SC18, depending on what USB ports your computer has. Once connected, go to your computer system settings/preferences and select the VideoMic GO II as your audio input and output device. This will bypass your computer’s internal microphone and speakers and use the VideoMic GO II instead. You will also need to select the VideoMic GO II as your input and output device in any software or application you are using the microphone with. Outside, using the VideoMic Go II produces fuller, more rounded audio than the Nikon Z50’s on-board microphone. Standing in a woodland with water droplets falling from the trees, birds tweeting, distance vehicle noise and the occasional passing aeroplane, pushing the microphone sensitivity to 19 or 20 resulted in some red on the audio levels indicator, so 18 is maximum value I would use in that setting. This resulted in just about acceptable audio when I was standing approximately 2m away from the camera, although the ambient noise is more obvious. Better results were produced at 1m distance with the microphone sensitivity set to 15 and at 50cm with the microphone sensitivity at 12.
