About this deal

Tom Tuplow is a very engaging character and I totally fell for him. He is kind and brave and insightful and intelligent. But his world has been taken over by his relationship with The Octopus God – a strict and punishing god that appears to be leading him on a path of spiritual enlightenment but whose methods include electrocuting him and forcing him to do and say things that he, Tom, doesn’t want to. Social media is choked with inspirational viral photos and videos of unusual animal friendships, but My Octopus Teacheris something very different. A year-long diary about one man and one octopus, it’s full of genuine wonder about the natural world, and frames the central relationship in terms that go beyond the mere “Aww, that’s cute!” response. In March 2015 A research team led by Paul Gardner Allen has located the Musashi. Musashi was one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced battleships. My Octopus Teacher tells the moving story of how Craig Foster, after vowing to free-dive daily after burning out at work, came to know an octopus living in the kelp forests outside his home in Cape Town. Over a year of observation, the two grow comfortable in each other’s company (but not that comfortable), granting Foster an intimate (as in, close!) view of an alien life. Tom never seen himself as having a mental health problem and from the beginning Tom was being labelled as a schizophrenic and put into a mental health clinic to subdue his thoughts just because his thoughts and behaviour was out of the ordinary.

My thanks to the Orion Publishing Group/W&N for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Octopus Man’ by Jasper Gibson in exchange for an honest review. This book shows the complex nature of both living with and treating mental illness. Tom resists treatment for so long because what is he life without the comfort of the Octopus God who controls everything he does. Formerly owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the yacht is now owned by Swedish billionaire Roger Samuelsson. Well, the blue blood is because the protein, haemocyanin, which carries oxygen around the octopus's body, contains copper rather than iron like we have in our own haemoglobin.

The jarring attempt at a happy ending didn't work for me, because so many of these stories don't have a happy ending. The claustrophobic feeling of despair and of helplessness described throughout, the catch-22s, the injustices are all very real and the attempts to cobble together a hopeful ending made me all the more sad that, for so many, there is no escape. In Tom, Gibson has created a character with wit and humour, endearing the reader to him. I found myself smiling and laughing with him...but hurt all the more for him in his pain, sadness and suffering. The allure of luxury yachts and their affluent proprietors has captured global interest, making our compilation a valued asset for those fascinated by the maritime embodiments of opulence. Investigative journalism A searingly honest depiction of mental ill health, and a system that is under resourced and under funded and that keeps people trapped in the system. What does it mean to live a meaningful life and is it possible to be accepted without being medicated into a zombie like state? Scheel (whose letterbox is illustrated with the snake-like fish), is the narrator and co-star of The Octopus in My House, a documentary which sees him share the spotlight with his then-16-year-old daughter Laurel and Heidi, an octopus, who becomes quite surprisingly endearing over the course of the programme.

At the very least, Foster’s evident feeling speaks to the transformative power of engaging with the natural world, which he is now working to protect through The Sea Change Project nonprofit – an example that more of us could stand to learn from. But if a documentary’s success is measured by how well it represents its subject, I’d say My Octopus Teacher falls short. On the other hand, if you recognize yourself in the first category, then you have your chance to redeem yourself and peek through the curtain of the taboo that envelopes schizophrenia thanks to this novel. The yacht comfortably accommodates 12 esteemed guests and a committed crew of 42, ensuring a seamless and lavish yachting experience. Accommodation includes a large VIP cabin, four guest cabins, a children’s cabin, and two additional cabins for staff or doctors. It was during those first few days that she gained her name. “When you first put animals in the tank they look for a place to hide and then they often don’t come out until they’ve had a chance to assess the place,” Scheel says. “We had anticipated that and bought several large snails and released a few crab in the tank. They all hid as well but over the next 10 days or so they disappeared one-by-one in the night time. When she realised there was nothing dangerous, she started to come out during the day.” Heidi’s appearance wasn’t purely a result of Scheel’s divorce. He has been studying octopuses for the past 25 years when he was presented with the opportunity to live with one and document their cohabitation by a television production company. This book unveils the problematic approach to a very sensitive topic such as schizophrenia, both in literature and society. We cannot know the full extent of mental struggles or even begin to fathom what they feel like just by reading this book, but it definitely provides a good introduction to the much wider topic of mental health and the precarious lives people affected by mental conditions live.

Understanding the Value of the OCTOPUS Yacht Every year in May, Allen hosts a themed party during the Cannes Film Festival. In May 2014 Paul hosted a party on board Octopus. That was during the Cannes International Film Festival.

The yacht houses a host of luxurious features including a helicopter hangar, a 10-person submarine, and multiple leisure and wellness facilities. The characters are so very recognisable to me - the way they converse, the limits of their empathy, their efforts to be compassionate. Culturally, this is a very British book, especially with regards to the dialogue. Lürssen Yachts is a luxury yacht builder based in Bremen, Germany. The company was founded in 1875 and is known for building custom-made motor yachts, with sizes ranging from 50 to 180 meters in length. Lurssen yachts are known for their high-quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and use of advanced technology. The company has a reputation for building some of the world’s largest and most complex yachts, and has a long history of working with top yacht designers and naval architects to create innovative and unique yacht designs. The most notable projects include Azzam, Dilbar, NORD, and Scheherazade. Espen Oeino The copper-based protein is more efficient at transporting oxygen molecules in cold and low-oxygen conditions, so is ideal for life in the ocean. Gibson asks us to consider what is lost when the “symptoms” of those engaged in alternate realities are fully suppressed, and how the experience of voice hearing can lead to a deeply connected and more compassionate life. Tom’s struggle is by no means romanticised—the presence of Malamok can be disturbingly cruel and punishing. Yet the constant battle between Tom and those who try to persuade him that the voice he perceives isn’t real is a losing one, as for Tom the voice is as tangible and life-affirming as the ground beneath his feet. With the help of flight-risk Missy, a fellow survivor of psychiatry who chooses to accept and even interact with the voice of Malamok, Tom eventually learns a way of coping with the voice until he is no longer controlled and overtaken. Tom decides he can neither deny nor be consumed by the voice, for “though neither protest or defiance is the answer still I must find progress (p 308),” navigating his relationship with the Octopus God so they can both develop and move forward into a rich and purposeful life.

This book gets more chaotic as it goes on, it’s difficult to follow Tom as he spirals more into the depths of schizophrenia. It highlights just how difficult it is to live with mental illness in a family member and the toll on all of your lives. MusashiWhile the Octopus boat is often incorrectly associated as the Bill Gates yacht, the superyacht Octopus was built for and owned by Paul Allen. The Octopus Man’ is a tragicomedy that like Ken Kesey’s seminal novel before it explores both the camaraderie that occurs between patients in mental health wards along with the abuses that sadly are found in some. Brian Eno’s long out-of-print collection of essays taken from his diary for the year 1995 is rightly regarded as one of the seminal books about music. This 25th-anniversary reissue, complete with new introduction and up-to-date notes by Eno, is an invaluable insight into the mind and working practices of one of the industry’s undeniable geniuses, even if the ostentatious self-regard that he displays (“I have a wonderful life,” he boasts early on) seems harder to swallow now than it might have done in his heyday.
