About this deal

Max Craigie, Ross Fraser and Janie Calder are a tight knit team and this is reflected in their understanding of one another and the light relaxed banter between them. They are ably assisted in this case by Norma, and by Niall, an old friend of Max's from the Met, and who he brings in to work undercover. As for his inspiration, he cites many works that he read over the years but there was one that he believes has to be the most impressive. As it happens, the man had been an employee of the National Crime Agency where he had been working as an intelligence officer. The Night Watch is a killer concept, an unflinching look at generational trauma and the mind’s reaction. Suffused with menace…it’s bloody brilliant.

It was only when he got out of policing and moved to the Scottish countryside that the desire to write became even stronger. On the northern most tip of Scotland at Dunnet Head, a lawyer out on an early morning run on the cliff tops, is also found dead. Turns out this guy was on his honeymoon - oh, and he just happened to secure freedom last week for Scott Paterson, in what was a very high profile criminal case. Over many months, much window staring, and many coffees, he finally had his draft of more than 100,000 words. It was at this time that he began ruminating on what Christopher Hitchens used to say. The author used to say that most people who believe they should write should never do so. The Night Watch follows DS Max Craigie as he tries to solve the mystery of several interlinked deaths and find the identity of the vigilante serial killer. Soon, he realizes that the serial killer is not someone on the outside, but someone on the investigation team. Will Max be able to stop the killer before he strikes again?

Advance Praise

DS Max Craigie’s team, the innocuous sounding Policing Standards Reassurance team whose task is actually to root out police corruption, smell a rat and Max, DC Janie Calder DI Ross Fraser and their analyst, Norma, swing into action. Snuggie Gibson, one of the more ethical journalists says a source tells him that the killer is actually in the police force. That answers a lot of questions. It reeks of vigilante justice. A suspect is identified and a sting operation planned but when they break down the door of this suspect they are too late. He is dead in the bathtub - another apparent suicide. But Max is having none of it. Somehow they will prove it was murder and they WILL catch the perpetrator! These prosecutions resulted in disbarments, asset confiscations that ran into the millions, and jail sentences.

Where to Find Us This is the book that you are desperate to finish so you know 'who did it', but on the other hand you don't want it to come to an end.' NetGalley reviewer, When Neil Lancaster moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2015, he found himself having too much time on his hands.Neil Lancaster is a mystery fiction author from the United Kingdom who is best known for the “DS Max Craigie” and the “Tom Novak” series of novels. The Night Watch by Neil Lancaster is a very interesting and intense police procedural. Lancaster served on the police force for over twenty-five years. His expertise in writing crime fiction shines through in the intricate details of the plot. Each character is a potential suspect leaving readers scrambling to figure out this twisty whodunit.

It happens that the man had been on his honeymoon and had just managed to get Scott Paterson released from a high-profile criminal case. Like many authors, Neil Lancaster grew up with a desire to one day become a fiction author. He believed that one day he would become an author but he was always too busy with family and work that he never had the time. Neil Lancaster has written a tense, twisty addition to an already excellent Scottish crime thriller series. I can't wait for the next installment. The pace doesn’t let up at all and Neil keeps you guessing with his clever dialogue and excellent plot. Loved it. You won’t be disappointed with The Night Watch .’ NetGalley reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A lawyer is found dead at sunrise on a lonely clifftop at Dunnet Head on the northernmost tip of Scotland. It was supposed to be his honeymoon, but now his wife will never see him again. Bagley had been one of the biggest thriller authors during the 1970s along with Hammond Innes and Alistair Maclean. Once again Neil Lancaster has written an absolute blinder. It starts off at a furious pace and doesn't let up. The investigation is compelling, the action exciting and is heart racingly furious in places. The gallows humour present in the previous books is woven in seamlessly throughout and I loved it. The reasons for the killings and the identity of the perp aren't at all simple to unravel with twists, turns, and discoveries throughout but as the end hurtled towards Max so did the danger and I found myself anxious to finish but not wanting it to end. The two deaths are then linked to several other murders and soon DS Max Craigie and his colleagues are dealing with a potential serial killer.Well, this is a belter of a book! A hugely entertaining and gripping read!’ NetGalley reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Freelance journalist, Shuggie Gibson receives information that the killer is a police officer, part of Leith MIT, triggering an inquiry involving Max, his foul mouthed boss, DI Ross Fraser, and DC Janie Calder, aided by the talented Norma and Barney. However, they struggle to make any progress, unsurprising given they are dealing with a vigilante police killer who is aware of every move they make. Given the pressure they are under, Max makes the decision to bring in an undercover police officer that had saved his life in London. As Max and his colleagues race against time to try and prevent further murders, they have no idea of just how ruthless the killer is. This is a twisted and dangerous case that is to test Max to his limits.
