About this deal

The novel has often been compared to Hans Christian Andersen's work, particularly " The Steadfast Tin Soldier". [3] Awards, nominations, and recognition [ edit ] A remarkable, eloquent and genuinely moving story. . . . Hang onto this title as one to remember for graduation gifts. It was on Abilene’s eleventh birthday that her father surprised the family by announcing that they were all going on a trip to London on the Queen Mary. Pellegrina tells Edward and Abilene a story about a princess who did not love anyone and whose tale ended without a “happy ever after” since she was living a life without love before they set out on their trip together. Edward would later come to understand the significance of this story.

In 2007 the U.S. National Education Association named it one of "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children" based on an online poll. [7] In 2012 it was ranked number 59 among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal – the third of three books by DiCamillo in the Top 100. [8] Adaptations [ edit ] The story is about Edward’s journey of misfortune through many different “owners” and his experiences with how others survive or don’t in his world. Sarah Ruth: Bryce’s lovely younger sister adores Edward. Despite just having a short life after meeting Edward, Sarah’s love for him has a profound effect on Edward. Minor Characters Um..." I paused. Did I not know the name of this masterpiece? Seriously? I thought to myself. "...something Tall Journey maybe?" It's about a rabbit, and he goes places," I said. Yes, that was the best I could do. She couldn't help me, and before I knew it, it was time to go home. It didn't occur to me to ask my teacher for the name of the book, or to even borrow it so I can read it at home. She was reading it to her other classes, and I suppose a part of me felt like I would be overstepping. Oh, to be nine and naive and considerate.

The novel contains several themes involving loss and recovery, kindness and compassion, and the journey to self-discovery. The main theme can be summarized by a quote from the book: "If you have no intention of loving or being loved, then the whole journey is pointless." DiCamillo writes tenderly and lyrically but with restraint, keeping a tight focus on Edward’s experience and gradual awakening. The story begins with Edward Tulane, a China rabbit who belongs to a girl named Abilene. The family is wealthy and not only does Edward have fancy clothes to wear, but he has the love of Abilene as well. She absolutely adores him and spends all of her time caring for him. This is the harrowing tale of a china rabbit doll who is separated from his young owner and undergoes a series of harrowing adventures over a number of years before finding a happy resolution. Bryce: Sarah Ruth’s sun-hat-wearing brother who cared for Edward when he was broken and shattered. Bruce gives Edward to his younger sister, Bryce, after rescuing him from an elderly lady who wanted to use him to scare crows. This is a WONDERFUL, worthy read, the story will touch your heart, and the illustrations are lovely. Although this may have been written for younger readers I believe it will be enjoyed by people of all ages. If you don't cry at some point you're as heartless as Edward is in the beginning. However, despite the tears, you will be left with a happy ending. I have to admit that I bawled like a baby when I finished this book, a modern classic. DiCamillo’s magical realism worked for both of us as we waited each day for what would happen next. I hope you find it as engaging as we did. Her third book, The Tale of Despereaux, was the Newbery Medal winner. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is the fifth book she has written forEdward Tulane is a china rabbit who only loves himself. He lives with a little girl and her family, happily sitting in his chair in the dining room while the girl is in school and spending all of his time with her when she is at home. Until tragedy strikes when he is accidentally sent overboard on a cruise to London. Edward spends a good deal of time on the ocean floor before a fisherman comes along and catches him in his nets after a storm. At the home of the fisherman and his wife, Edward is dressed in dresses and his name is changed. In spite of that, he finds happiness with the couple until their daughter comes along to ruin everything by sending him to the town's garbage dump.

Unless otherwise stated, this interview was conducted at the time the book was first published, and is reproduced with permission of the publisher. I don’t question much of what Kate DiCamillo chooses to write about. Going with the flow has its rewards. I had my doubts whether our “five going on six” year old would have the same attitude, but she did. I have been loved, Edward told the stars. So? said the stars. What difference does that make when you are all alone now?” Pellegrina: Abilene’s grandmother, Pellegrina, is the one who gives her the gift of Edward. It would appear that Pellegrina is aware that Edward has a very important lesson to learn.Lovingly told, DiCamillo’s affection for her characters shines through and overtakes you and by the book’s end, readers will care deeply.

I’m choosing this book for my October read for the Ultimate Reading Challenge. One of my favorite tropes is when a character learns about the power of love and I feel this book is a great example. DiCamillo’s newest offering is full of lovely, stately language, a riveting plot and a message that is heartwarming without being preachy. Fans of Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux will not be disappointed. . . .This tale has ‘destined to be classic’ written all over it, and it lives up to its great promise. Edward Tulane: All eyes in the book are on Edward. All through the novel, the reader is a part of his exploits. Edward, the lovable porcelain bunny doll, doesn’t start out in the story realizing how blessed he is to have such a loving owner. At the conclusion of his adventure, Edward has learned what it’s like to love and be loved by another person. Ibatoulline outdoes himself — Yet even standing alone, the story soars because of DiCamillo’s lyrical use of language and universal yearnings.

Kate DiCamillo

DiCamillo, Kate (January–February 2007). "Boston Globe–Horn Book Award Acceptance". The Horn Book Magazine . Retrieved 2007-10-11. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo is the story of Edward Tulane, a china rabbit who becomes lost from the little girl who loves him. His travels span the course of more than 30 years as he tries to find love and happiness again, even if it means having a life without his former owner. As Edward goes from place to place he also changes emotionally. He meets new people that help him along his path and he not only finds the true meaning of love but he also finds his way home. This is a classic children's tale of hope, loss, change, but most importantly love. In all, Edward Tulane felt himself to be an exceptional specimen. Only his whiskers gave him pause. They were long and elegant (as they should be), but they were of uncertain origin. Edward felt quite strongly that they were not the whiskers of a rabbit. Whom the whiskers had belonged to initially–what unsavory animal–was a question Edward cold not bear to consider for too long. Abilene: She is the little girl that owns and loves Edward, even if he initially doesn’t reciprocate that love.
