Patton, Alli (March 3, 2023). "Jimmie Allen Drops Blues-Fueled Cover of the Rolling Stones' "Miss You" ". American Songwriter . Retrieved March 16, 2023. Frankly, the answer is probably immaterial, as I share the view that you can’t have too much of a good thing, even, if, to coin a phrase, you can’t always get what you want. And it’s always good to see some young cubs getting to take a bite at the Jagger-Richards canon. Let’s see if it’s any good. Others featured on the record include Jimmie Allen, Steve Earle, Marcus King, Little Big Town, Elvie Shane and Koe Wetzel.I wanted everybody in the same room together so that they all could feed off of each other and [have] it be as organic and as real as possible,” Deaton says. “Whatever that Stones thing is that they have [whenever] they’re in a room, I wanted to be able to create that and get as close to it as we possibly could.” In honor of the 60th anniversary of The Rolling Stones, country artists banded together to create a tribute album called Stoned Cold Country, out now. Listen below. Jimmie Allen, Brooks & Dunn, Brothers Osborne, Eric Church, Steve Earle, Elle King, Marcus King, Little Big Town, Ashley McBryde, Maren Morris, Elvie Shane, Koe Wetzel, The War And Treaty, Lainey Wilson & Zac Brown Band That country music’s relationship with the Rolling Stones reaches across decades is a given. Even the parents of some of the youngest artists here were children if they were even born when the British bad boys played their first gig. In 1997, another country tribute album dedicated to this subject, Stone Country paired country legends and current hitmakers with Stones classics. For that collection, reliance was still heavy on hits, but there was a wider scope. There are no revelations on Stoned Cold Country like Nanci Griffith’s sublime treatment of “No Expectations”, or George Jones’ fitting “Time Is on My Side”, for example. Long fascinated by the Stones, and specifically their Country roots, Deaton spent the past several years on a specific mission: namely to shine a light on the Stones’ influence not only on Country music at large, but more specifically on some of its most convention-busting contemporary artists.

Deaton, who dubbed the album “a Nashville love letter to the Stones,” says many of the artists, like Church, have long histories with the music: “[Church] said that when he was nobody and just playing guitar in front of 10 people, he got more tips when he played ‘Honky Tonk Women.’The Stones have been so important to him for so long that it’s been an honor just to be able to say ‘thank you’ on this record.” To do so, Deaton had to ensure he had unfettered freedom to make the project he wanted. “Hartwig is one of my dearest friends, and I told him, ‘Listen, I’m getting ready to go deep on this and I need to ask you one question from a business standpoint before I go under here: how many BMG artists do I have to have on the record?’” Deaton recalls. “And he said, ‘Go make the best record you can make. There’s no minimum, there’s no maximum.’” The album ended up with three BMG artists: Wilson, Jimmie Allen and Shane. Fans can also get an intimate look into the creation of the record with the newly released album trailer featuring studio footage and interviews with the artists discussing The Rolling Stones’ tremendous impact on the world at large, Country music, and their own lives – watch here! The album features vibrant contributions from Jimmie Allen, Brooks & Dunn, Brothers Osborne, Eric Church, Steve Earle, Elle King, Marcus King, Little Big Town, Ashley McBryde, Maren Morris, Shane, Koe Wetzel, The War And Treaty, Lainey Wilson & Zac Brown Band – all of whom inject their own trademark sonic styles into the revered music of the Stones, creating a powerful homage to one of the most enduring, trailblazing and influential bands in the world.Desperate for some up by this point, I was grateful to hear Little Big Town offer perhaps the most consummate take on “Wild Horses” I have ever encountered. The steel is, shhh, better than Sneaky Pete Kleinow’s in the erstwhile “best version” by the Flying Burrito Brothers. The vocals are glorious, the harmonies better, especially in the four part chorus chorale. Long fascinated by the The Rolling Stones – and specifically their Country roots – acclaimed Nashville-based Deaton spent the past several years on a specific mission: namely to shine a light on the Stones’ influence not only on Country music at large, but more specifically on some of its most convention-busting contemporary artists. Tribute albums are fairly common in country music. It seems almost like tradition for artists to tip their hats to the legends that came before. What is unique about the genre’s latest tribute collection, Stoned Cold Country, is who they’re honoring.
