About this deal

Spray protection depends on the tyre and mudguard width you use, but the 45mm tyres on my test bike were dwarfed by the generous width of these ‘guards. But that said, you perfectly well attach your own mudflaps to the Bluemels Basic and extend their spray protection that way. It’s simple (and cheap) enough to fashion a set from a few sheets of rubber - and there are even brands which offer funky designs, such as Raw Mudflap. ultra-fine aluminium strips are embedded in a plastic coating, the mudguards are extremely robust, rigid and The silver plastic mudguards have two full-length parallel clear slots within them, which can help to show how dirty the underside is, and they also have good-sized flaps at the rear of each one. I’m mostly using the 35mm Longboards with 28c Schwalbe Pro One tubeless tires mounted to Mason x Hunt 4Season Disc wheels with a 17mm inner width. Those tires measure about 29mm wide, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable riding anything much bigger than that without going for a wider fender profile. Riding impressions

There are also big improvements to the little plastic caps that cover the end of the stays. This used to be a nightmare to fit, having to squeeze them over the tab on the mudguard blade itself and then try and wiggle the stay into it while holding the captive bolt in place. It's now merely a matter of cutting the stays, bolting them all together and then fitting the caps while a fixing holds everything firmly together. Performance This, combined with the minimally fussy fitting, makes the SKS Raceblade Pro XL Stealth Series better than any of its clip-on competitors - which generally either don’t fit as well or don’t offer as good protection. Value-wise they are a bit more expensive than the competition, but they are also readily available for less online. The SKS Bluemels mudguard set is great for commuters and road cyclists needing protection from dirt and spray. With key parts made from stainless steel the SKS Bluemels are very durable for daily use. also reliably protects against dirt and spray water. Thanks to the flexible sandwich construction, in which SKS Bluemels are mountain bike tires that fit in wheels. Whatever terrain you ride on, these bicycle mudguard are great at safeguarding you from dirt, sludge, water spray, and everything else you wish to avoid. Features of sks bluemels mudguardsA brilliant performance! The SKS BLUEMELS BASIC mudguard set can not only be perfectly integrated onto the bike but In use, what do you want a mudguard to do other than keep you dry? That’s it probably, but there are a couple more positives from a set of decent mudguards. There are three widths available, and these 37mm wide mudguards are able to accommodate up to a 30mm tire. They looked in proportion when using a 28mm tire and there was a good amount of space to the side of the tire. As the guards will be going on a bike that is also ridden ‘ sans fender’, the ease of fitting and removal is important, as is the speed and simplicity. We like a guard set to be easy to keep together off the bike. Too many parts to get lost or slide under the fridge are never a good thing. How we test

SKS Germany is the first name in fenders in my eyes. From their classic full-coverage Bluemels to strap-on Raceblades to many clip-on versions in between, they have a mudguard solution for pretty much every bike. I’ve spent the last year of wet riding & winter commutes protected by a set of the extended Longboards, and my dry feet & butt couldn’t be more happy. SKS Longboard extended full coverage Bluemels fenders This is useful, because the mudguards themselves aren’t especially long, particularly the rear, which is quite short. It’s not one you’d want to follow on a wet day commuting into the city. SKS mudguards encompass an integrated cable tunnel in the rear mudguard. Thus allowing cabling for a rear light to be inside. The spoiler provides maximum splash water protection, while the reflector improves road safety. The front guard extends low enough that it all but eliminates the spray from your front wheels on to your toes. Even the best cycling overshoes will eventually give way to a content stream of water after a couple of hours so why not just stop the spray? Your toes and shoes will thank you for not leaving them entrenched in cold water for hours at a time. The construction consists of a sandwich of thin aluminium encased in plastic. It’s not quite as rigid as an all-metal design, but thanks to the sturdy stays, our tester didn’t have any issues with rubbing. But naturally, if you try to cram a wider tire than recommended - or if the clearance between your seatstays is particularly tight - you can still experience issues. A mudguard of this length will also keep those behind you dry as it extends low enough at the rear to stop the spray from your rear tyre going up onto the following rider. The coverage offered by the rear guard will also offer a lot of protection to your drivetrain from the mud and salt on the road, in turn offering easier cleaning and less wear. The brand SKS Bluemels, from the SKS range of German-make bicycle mudguards, offer a combination of qualities you'll appreciate. The CAB plastic designs are the major highlight. Also, CAB is a cellulose-based luxury plastic (wood). In addition, CAB bicycle mudguard systems are flexible, weatherproof and UV resistance, corrosion proof and causes no risk to the plastics. A brilliant performance! The SKS Bluemels mudguard set can not only be perfectly integrated onto the bike but also reliably protects against dirt and spray water. Thanks to the flexible sandwich construction, in which ultra-fine aluminium strips are embedded in a plastic coating, the mudguards are extremely robust, rigid and corrosion resistant.

Rather than the more conventional V-shaped stays, the Commuter mudguards have parallel twin stays, with Secu-Clip fittings front and rear, designed to release the stay from the fitting if anything gets jammed between the ‘guard and the tyre. As long as you don’t try and cram too fat a tire under them they’re rub-free. They may not be quite as rigid as all-aluminium mudguards, but they’re certainly not problematically floppy. Winter commutes became a bit more enjoyable, because below freezing I don’t ever have to worry about wearing special waterproof pants or shoes to work. And for rainy spring & fall road rides I no longer have to worry about road spray on my glasses, or ending up with a soaking wet chamois by the end of the ride. Close-fitting and easy to adjust, it delivers effective coverage that should protect you from the worst road spray. SKS Bluemels Longboard mudguards specification and features This isn’t a process you can do in a hurry. It’s not mechanically difficult, but it’s faffy and involves lots of easily-fumbled small parts. I lost one of the drilled bolts while fitting this set, but fortunately had a spare. It’d be nice if SKS threw in a couple of extras, just in case. The rear stays don’t have the Secu-Clip, but as with the front ones, must be fed through an eyebolt, where they’re inserted through one side of a fixed mudguard bridge and tightened. cutouts make mounting possible even when installation clearance is small. Includes accessories and stays. Specifications

This plastic clip retains the one-piece V-shaped stay during normal usage, but should a foreign object get caught between the tyre and mudguard, it enables the stay to break away from the fork, hopefully avoiding an accident. The 35mm pair I tested come with two SKS fixed steel bridges on each mudguard, which align with the V-shaped 3.4mm-diameter stainless steel stays. With that extra long coverage, our reviewer found that the Bontrager NCS fenders/mudguards offer more protection than many other ‘full-length’ mudguards. The rubber mudflaps at the ends of fenders further add to the length and help reduce road spray for your feet or friends, but these aren’t as long as we see on some other mudgaurd sets. There are, broadly speaking, two types of fender / mudguard: those for frames with mudguard eyes –‘fixed mudguards’– and those for frames without, known as clip-on mudguards. Of course even if your bike has mudguard eyes there’s no reason why you can’t use clip-ons if you’re looking for a lightweight, easily removable solution. Why fit fenders / mudguards? I know these conditions would put a lot of people off riding when you could jump on the turbo trainer, but if like me you’re an all-season commuter, then this is what you need. There are fenders / mudguards which do provide more coverage at a similar price - even within SKS’s own range, such as the SKS Longboards. If wet weather protection is most important to you, the choice between the two is pretty obvious. But there will be those who prefer the tidier looks of the Bluemels Basics. To stop your toes from clashing with the stay end caps, the Full Metal fenders / mudguards use a single stay design that is kept higher on front fender than a double stay type. It made low speed manoeuvring easier, although there was still toe overlap on my bike but that's the bike and not the mudguards fault.
