About this deal

BMW continued using pink OAT coolant for two decades across their lineup. But by 2016, they decided it was time to switch things up again. This time, BMW moved to an orange OAT formula designed for even longer service intervals – up to 15 years! It was branded as BMW “Longlife” coolant, intended for their latest high-performance engines. Seven to eight per cent of DS3s sold by Citroen now have the Fuchsia Pink roof option, while 11 per cent of Renault Twingo customers also choose Fuschia (where it’s available) and seven per cent of Peugeot 208 buyers opted for Rose Quartz metallic last year. Fuchsia Blush was introduced for the Kia Picanto in January, and this shade now accounts for 5.3 per cent of the colour mix. The proportion could be higher, but demand is outstripping supply. The most popular cars to spray pink are the MINI and VW Beetle Cabriolet. John’s also sprayed a 500 in Razr Pink – a more vibrant shade than Fiat’s own Idol Pink, which makes up two per cent of the colour mix.

In both cases, selective colour changes can help to cut the amount of cooling and heating required from the vehicle’s air conditioning. This reduces the amount of energy the vehicle electrical system needs and also its fuel the vehicle’s fuel or electricity consumption. In an all-electric car, changing the colour in line with the weather can therefore also help to increase the range. In the interior, the technology could, for example, prevent the dashboard from heating up too much. The orange fluid exceeds the corrosion protection of even BMW’s previous pink coolant. It’s formulated specifically for their latest generation of turbocharged engines, including high-performance M models and hybrids. This coolant ensures optimal performance and longevity from BMW’s newest powerplants. Digital experiences won't just be limited to displays in the future. There will be more and more melding of the real and virtual. With the BMW iX Flow, we are bringing the car body to life,” says Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Development. Yet what about those crucial resale values? Tim Naylor, editor of British Car Auctions’ annual Used Car Market Report, says: “Pink remains a very scarce colour. However, when pink cars do get offered for sale, their scarcity can work in their favour.”

Current BMW models are typically characterised by individuality and the emotionalisation of their interior space. The My Modes feature allows the driver to tailor the atmosphere in the interior entirely to their personal mood and the driving experience they want. With the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink, the BMW Group offers a completely new way of changing the vehicle's appearance in line with the driver's aesthetic preferences, the environmental conditions or even functional requirements. The technology thus offers unprecedented potential for personalisation in the area of exterior design, as the surface of the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink can vary its shade at the driver’s prompting. Well, this is the perfect occasion for a Mea culpa. And, as atonement, I present you with the cool F82 BMW M4 that became the hilarious object of Valentine’s Day adoration. As well as a major wrap/paintjob community fail. New technologies will provide a whole new level of decision-making freedom in the future. “This gives the driver the freedom to express different facets of their personality or even their enjoyment of change outwardly, and to redefine this each time they sit in their car,” says Stella Clarke, Head of Project for the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink. “Similar to fashion or the status ads on social media channels, the vehicle then becomes an expression of different moods and circumstances in daily life.”Like the old blue, BMW’s pink antifreeze/coolant is obsolete for the newest BMW models. However, it’s still ideal for models that had it as the factory fill. If your BMW was built between 1996-2016, be sure to use the proper pink fluid for servicing the cooling system. Mixing with generic coolants or the newer orange will cause corrosion. Orange Coolant: For 2016+ BMW Models Make sure to always use Genuine BMW Orange Longlife coolant if your model came filled with it from the factory. Mixing with other coolant types or generic brands will compromise protection. Never mix orange and older pink or blue inside your BMW. How to Choose the Right BMW Coolant? When it comes to pink, Nothard says: “People bidding at auction for a number of cars to sell on wouldn’t go for pink; the buyers will have a customer already lined up, or they may be a private buyer looking for a pink model, so the cars perform well.” It’s clear that girl power is one reason you’ll see more pink cars around. Another is that brighter, bolder colours are becoming more popular across the entire automotive palette. The Hot Magenta Ford Fiesta (two per cent of the mix) is far from the brightest shade on the chart compared with Candy Blue (turquoise), Hot Mustard (acid yellow) and the more traditional Race Red.

Before jumping into the specifics of each color, it helps to understand why BMW has changed their coolant formulas multiple times over the decades. These changes reflect evolving engine technologies and chemistries. So in 1996, BMW switched to a new OAT coolant technology – from blue to pink! This OAT (Organic Acid Technology) coolant offered superior corrosion protection for aluminum engine parts. It also had a longer service life, needing less frequent changes compared to the old blue. Achieving this effect on a vehicle body involves the application of many precisely fitted ePaper segments. Generative design processes are implemented to ensure the segments reflect the characteristic contours of the vehicle and the resulting variations in light and shadow. The generative design algorithms enable the necessary formability and flexibility required to tailor the ePaper exactly to the design lines of the vehicle. Whether it’s blue, pink, or orange, the color of your BMW coolant matters! Each color was developed by BMW to protect specific engines. Using the wrong coolant can corrode aluminum components. Fortunately, while you won’t find the blue coolant on BMW dealer shelves today, it is still available from specialty suppliers online for servicing classic BMWs. Make sure to use a genuine OEM fluid, not generic blue. Pink Coolant: For 1990s-2010s Aluminum EnginesThis doesn’t tell the whole story, though, as many cars that have been sprayed pink or covered in PVC wraps will have their original colour on the V5. We’ll finish this guide by answering some common FAQs about BMW coolant colors: Is blue BMW coolant still available? BMW used this popular pink coolant for the next 20 years, up until 2016. It was factory-filled in models like the E36, E46, and E90 3 Series, along with 5, 6, 7, X3, X5 models, and more from the mid-1990s into the 2010s. When servicing your BMW’s cooling system, never mix different colored coolants together. Diluting or altering the OEM chemistry can cause serious corrosion and damage.

Spire Automotive Limited - Spire Lakeside Limited - Beadles Sidcup Limited - Think One Limited - Hodgson Automotive Limited No, do not mix different BMW coolant colors together! Each formula is specially developed for certain models and engine types. Mixing the wrong colors can cause catastrophic corrosion and clogging. Always use the exact coolant color recommended by BMW for your vehicle. Does the coolant color matter if I flush the system? That’s why it’s so important to determine your BMW’s factory fill coolant, and continue servicing with that same formulation. Never mix incompatible coolant colors or technologies in your vehicle.Philip Nothard, price expert CAP’s used car value specialist, agrees that cars finished in pink and other bright colours are not only holding their value, but outperforming ‘safe’ options. Yes, it’s critical to use the proper BMW coolant even after a system flush. That ensures you refill with the ideal anti-corrosion formula designed for your BMW’s engine. Flushing doesn’t remove the need to use the correct color. What about using universal coolant in a BMW? In the big book of car buying dos and don'ts, one mistake used to stand out above all others. It didn’t matter what badge was on the bootlid or what engine under the bonnet; but if you dared to drive home in a pink car, people would look on in horror and pity.
