About this deal

I think what I like about Paperchase is the branded items they sell in-store. I used to buy my Moleskine notebooks from Paperchase. I’ve stopped doing that now more because of Moleskine rather than Paperchase. I also recently came across the Mildliner highlighters in a local Paperchase store. Something I didn’t think was available in the UK. Over the past few years, the grocer has partnered with the likes of AO and Homebase to develop its non-food offer – although it ultimately ended its partnership with AO in July 2022. What’s next for Paperchase under Tesco? Retail Gazette looks at what exactly went wrong at Paperchase, and what led a once-thriving retailer to disappear from the high street Stiff competition

With Tesco opting not to buy Paperchase stores, Pow expects it to strengthen its online proposition. The only downside with the Mildliner Brush Pens is that they can’t be refilled. When the ink runs out you have to buy an entirely new pen. However I’ve found that the ink lasts a good long time in the Mildliners. I bought my first Mildliners over three years ago and they haven’t run out of ink yet. The ink also hasn’t dried out which is much better compared to the Tombow pens. Brush nib The entire Mildliner range are dual tipped highlighters. The brush pens have a large brush nib and a fine point nib. This fine point nib is slightly finer than what you find on the regular Mildliners. The brush pens possibly have a better design because of the illustrations on the body of the pen showing which end is the brush nib and which end is the fine nib. The push into stationery and greetings cards by value players including B&M, Primark, Wilko, and Aldi, which are all offering trend-led ranges will have hit Paperchase, which held premium price points. For those who want a compact diary but still the space to go into detail, this simple brown faux-leather A6 diary is perfect. Its day-to-view layout has lines for an hourly breakdown of your schedule, from 9am to 6pm; great for students with a complicated timetable or multiple extra-curricular commitments. The stationery retail sector is rife with competition from general retailers such as John Lewis and Flying Tiger to more specialists like WHSmith, Ryman, Smiggle, Card Factory and The Works. All 106 Paperchase stores will close Like I said its not obvious now how this nib wears over time. Maybe after a few months I will add a little update on how the brush nib has changed with use. It is important to note that the brush nib will wear down less if you use a smooth paper. Colour choice This means that the ink will be the same too. The ink in the Mildliners feels more like a highlighter compared to a regular marker pen. It should be noted that the colour isn’t as vibrant compared to something like the Tombow. It will be down to preferences if you like this.

The Zebra Mildliner Brush Pens come in 15 different colours. These colours come in three different sets. Fluorescent colours, warm colours and the set I bought is called cool & refined colours. The Mildliners can be bought in sets of 5 but it may also be possible to buy a set with all 15 colours. MORE LIKE THIS: 6 Pens I Love For Bullet Journaling Although Paperchase has found a home with the UK’s largest retailer, the acquisition is expected to lead to mass store closures as the supermarket has only bought the IP and brand. However, the store will be core as people often buy greetings cards and stationery when they need it.

One of the main reasons I originally bought the Mildliners was because of the colour choices. The Mildliners are technically a range of highlighters. But for the most part they don’t come in traditional highlighter colours. Zebra have released a set of regular Mildliners in fluro colours. But for the most part the Mildliners all have more muted or pastel shades. It’s been a long time since I last had an advent calendar. Growing up it was always part of the Christmas tradition that I got an advent calendar. But recently I haven’t felt the need for one. Yeah, it’s nice getting a little treat each day in the run-up to Christmas. But honestly, it got to the point where I didn’t want chocolate every day. Maybe that’s just part of growing up. Christmas isn’t this exciting time you want to count down to. Nowadays I’m much more excited about spending time with my family than I am interested in presents. I really like the Mildliner pens. They have become an essential part of my planning system. Maybe one day I will share how I use colour coding in my bullet journal. Its hard to say for certain if I will get more use out of the brush pens compared to the regular Mildliners.

Catherine Erdly, founder of The Resilient Retail Club says Paperchase was “a victim of an increasingly competitive stationery market”. I should warn everyone right now that this won’t be an unbiased review of the Zebra Mildliner Brush Pen. I already know that I love the Mildliner range. These pens have a nice design with a white body and some minimal markings on the side of the pen.We spoke to a few productivity pros to get the scoop on planners. Here’s what they told us to look for: Generous note-taking space. So you can get your brain-dump on — good for getting things done and reducing stress.

It is possible to buy the Mildliner pens individually and I would recommend you do this if you have the opportunity. This way you can get the exact colours you want. This can be helpful if you have a specific colour scheme that you use in your bullet journal. I know the colours I use most often are red, yellow, blue and grey. I’m not saying this makes Paperchase bad in any way. They sell those items because people like and will, therefore, buy them. But I’m not one of those people. And they do still make some things which I love. Paperchase has an incredible range of greetings cards. I buy all of my greetings cards from Paperchase. Tesco was a bit of a left field choice but given the success of shop-in-shop concepts in non-food areas of supermarkets like toys and clothing maybe it is less of a surprise than we might think,” she tells Retail Gazette.

Paperchase has a big footprint on the high street so its brand is highly recognised. Tesco has now got this brand that has cost it peanuts, so it will be looking for sales to come through online,” he tells Retail Gazette. That was my review of the Zebra Mildliner brush pen. I’ve loved the Mildliner range for a long time, so it was fun getting to try out something new. These pens have also made me realise I don’t hate brush lettering with a large nib as much as I thought. But it may just be that I’m a lot better at brush lettering now. Meanwhile, online players such as Moonpig have made a dent into Paperchase’s greetings card sales while value player Card Factory continues to thrive. Over expansion
