About this deal

Have you ever read the Dr. Seuss book My Many Colored Days? It’s one of my kids’ favorites. I love the way it helps kids to understand different feelings. We created a Color My Feelings project to go along with the book.

This created a crayon-resist effect on the faces. Each day is described in terms of a particular color, which in turn is associated with specific emotions. My Many Colored Days – Color & Feelings Unit Color cognizance is an essential step of a child’s development. In 1993, a study was conducted on children’s emotional associations with colors and found that they had an early affinity with bright colors, having positive emotional connotations, and adversity with dark colors, having negative emotional connotations. I love the book My Many Colored Days because it helps teach children about their feelings. It has a color to represent different feelings and moods.

Accompanying a manuscript Dr. Seuss wrote in 1973, was a letter outlining his hopes of finding "a great color artist who will not be dominated by me." This is a gentler offering, that was recommended to me by a colleague who swore by its lyrical quality – it is in Dr Seuss’s trademark rhyme – but is unusual in that it doesn’t contain a usual ‘story’. Instead, it charts a short journey through different feelings, associating them with colours. The illustrations are bright and vivid, really helping the expression of the different feelings they are linked to. Below you will find lesson ideas, an eating adventure, vocabulary, some puzzles and more to make this Dr. Seuss classic more exciting! Exploring feelings with your kids will help you get to know them better. As adults, we have had a lot of life experiences and learned a lot about how acting from our feelings can be destructive. Kids will benefit greatly from learning to work through emotions with guidance, love and support. Materials Needed for Dr. Seuss Craft forMy Many Colored DaysI really enjoyed reading this book and believe that it has many great teaching opportunities - from looking at the illustrations and the style that has been used (Art), to talking about feelings and emotions (maybe in a PSCHE) lesson as well as many more. You could also pair each colour to a tune in music (e.g. buzzing sound for yellow as that is linked to being a buzzy bee in the book). I love ALL of his books but this one is super special. I have a deep love for colors and creativity and this book inspires me. Through the use of bouncing rhymes with many colors and animals, this book offers an opportunity for children to start understanding feelings and moods and how to express themselves. So many fun conversations starters are in this book to get kids communicating and sharing. This is such a fun Dr. Seuss Craft For My Many Colored Days. In May of 1954, Life published a report concerning illiteracy among school children. The report said, among other things, that children were having trouble to read because their books were boring. This inspired Geisel's publisher, and prompted him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important, asked him to cut the list to 250 words (the publishers idea of how many words at one time a first grader could absorb), and write a book. Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him published The Cat in the Hat, which went on to instant success. It's a sophisticated palette with evolved, more adult-like rhymes that will appeal to adults as well as children. And provide good jumping-off points to discuss feelings with the kids. Feelings just happen and normalizing them is a way to decrease anxiety. Sometimes feelings are so overwhelming and kids need to learn how to identify the difference between feelings and what is really happening around them. When children can identify with their feelings, stress and anxiety levels are lower. Truffula trees represent the promise of regrowth. This post has some fun ideas for ways to teach kids about the environment through another Dr. Seuss book, The Lorax. Students will need to cut out the inside of the shape, leaving the marked edge and creating a “frame.”

Provide the students with one of the shapes above copied onto either construction paper or tag board. My Many Colored Days is a rhyming story that offers a wonderful way for parents and teachers to talk with children about their feelings. Helen Palmer Geisel died in 1967. Theodor Geisel married Audrey Stone Diamond in 1968. Theodor Seuss Geisel died 24 September 1991. Much like other skills that are vital to healthy social and emotional development in kiddos, learning how to cope with emotions is something that takes practice and needs to be supported, even encouraged. Here are three great reasons to teach kids about feelings.
