About this deal

The M1 is one of the busiest and most essential motorways in the UK, connecting London to Leeds and linking with other major routes such as the M25, M6, M62 and A1(M). The motorway is 193 miles (311 km) long and carries a considerable volume of traffic every day. The M1 was constructed in four phases between 1959 and 1999. The length of a machine screw or bolt is indicated by an × and the length expressed in millimetres (e.g. M8-1.25×30 or M8×30). [ citation needed]

The major Russian ORT TV station organised a national televised debate as to what should be done with the station. Former cosmonaut Georgi Grechko suggested that it should be kept in orbit long enough to salvage any useful equipment from it, for transfer to the International Space Station or other spacecraft, however Konstantin Feoktistov argued that it would cost more to retrieve the equipment than to replace it. Anatoly Artsebarsky argued that Mir should be kept because he believed that once it had been deorbited, the US would try to marginalise Russian involvement in the ISS. An online opinion poll showed 67% support worldwide for keeping it in orbit. [66] Rosaviakosmos and RKK Energia responded to criticism of the decision in an open letter in mid February, which explained that the "actual condition of the onboard systems...[does] not make possible the safe and reliable operation of Mir", and that attempts to prolong its life "may lead to the loss of control of Mir..and, as a result, to catastrophic consequences not only for Russia but for the whole world." The final section of the M1 was opened to junction 1 at Staples Corner in 1977. There the motorway meets the North Circular Road (A406) at a grade separated junction and roundabout. Unrealised plans from the 1960s would have seen the motorway continue through the junction on an elevated roadway to end at West Hampstead, where it would have met the North Cross Route, the northern section of the London Motorway Box, a proposed ring of urban motorway around the central area. The layout of the Staples Corner junction was originally built in accordance with those plans, although most of the London Ringways Plan had been cancelled by 1973. Around the same time, the section between the then-M10 and junction 5 was widened from the original two lanes to three. M1 Pro and M1 Max introduce a system-on-a-chip (SoC) architecture to pro systems for the first time. The chips feature fast unified memory, industry-leading performance per watt, and incredible power efficiency, along with increased memory bandwidth and capacity. M1 Pro offers up to 200GB/s of memory bandwidth with support for up to 32GB of unified memory. M1 Max delivers up to 400GB/s of memory bandwidth — 2x that of M1 Pro and nearly 6x that of M1 — and support for up to 64GB of unified memory. And while the latest PC laptops top out at 16GB of graphics memory, having this huge amount of memory enables graphics-intensive workflows previously unimaginable on a notebook. The efficient architecture of M1 Pro and M1 Max means they deliver the same level of performance whether MacBook Pro is plugged in or using the battery. M1 Pro and M1 Max also feature enhanced media engines with dedicated ProRes accelerators specifically for pro video processing. M1 Pro and M1 Max are by far the most powerful chips Apple has ever built. Zak, Anatoly (19 January 2001). "Russians set new launch date for Mir's deorbiting tug". Spaceflight Now. ISO 965-4: Limits of sizes for hot-dip galvanized external screw threads to mate with internal screw threads tapped with tolerance position H or G after galvanizing Stretching from London to the north, the M1 is Britain's first full-length motorway and possibly its most iconic. On 26 August 2017, two lorries and a minibus crashed between junctions 14 and 15, near Newport Pagnell, shutting down the motorway for most of the day. Eight people were killed and three severely injured. The drivers of the lorries were charged with dangerous driving, with one also charged with drunk driving. [50] The incident represented the largest loss of life as the result of a motorway accident since a crash on the M40 in 1993. [51] a b "Mir Deorbit Date Moves to March 22". Space.com. 14 March 2001. These were added to improve safety and reduce accidents on the motorway. However, they also caused some controversy among drivers who felt that they were losing their freedom and fun on the road.

The third phase of the M1 was opened between 1977 and 1999. It extended the motorway from Hook Moor in West Yorkshire to Leeds and added more lanes and junctions to cope with the growing traffic. Today, it has seen a number of expensive upgrades to help it cope with modern traffic. Its original specification called for road that would carry 13,000 to 14,000 vehicles per day; today it carries 130,000 to 140,000. Widening and junction improvements between the M25 and Luton make the section closes to London more bearable, but sadly those changes meant destroying the highly unusual architecture of the original motorway. North of there, as far as Milton Keynes, it's been turned into a Smart Motorway, which isn't quite so good for capacity but has allowed Owen Williams' bridges to survive. In 2017, there were multiple fatalities after a collision involving two lorries and a minibus - the incident occurred between junction 14 and 15, near Milton Keynes. The stretch between junction 21 and 22 has also seen recent accidents, resulting in lane closures, while the area between junction 12 and 13 - in the Bedford region - has been considered an accident hotspot. During this work the Leicester Forest East services would be closed, and possibly relocated. [21] Consultation took place in 2007. A four-lane motorway carries traffic from Watford and Northampton towards St Albans and Luton. It has an AADF of 8,337 vehicles per hour, making it England’s fourth busiest section of the M1. This section is also subject to frequent delays and incidents due to its high volume and complex junctions. 5.
