About this deal

The Three II is fairly volume dependent in a variety of ways. At nominal volumes, the Klipsch device is a solid performer with a pleasingly rich low end and an accurate and clear high-end, and it’s also very strong on dynamics. But the qualities of its timbre and dynamics shift as the volume goes up or down. At high volume, it especially suffers; this isn’t a speaker for loud house parties, and it’s not ideal for fans of electronic music or hip-hop. This is also where the device produces some unfortunate artifacts. Sub-scores explained

If you're looking to physically connect to The Three - and not by petting the speaker grille like we did - there are a number of ways to do so. The Three supports not only Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which we'll talk about in a moment, it also connects via 3.5mm auxiliary, analog RCA, USB, and even a phono input for a turntable. That's right, you can connect The Three directly to your record player. This might be the most versatile wireless speaker we've ever reviewed. The only other connection we could think of adding is Optical, like we found on the RIVA Festival, but there are plenty enough options here. Sadly, we didn't have a turntable to test out, so please share your experiences with us if you do. All the other analog connections work well, but we find ourselves mostly pairing through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Speech from, say, Radio 4 announcers as heard via the CXN, ha d good presence, although traces of chestiness were apparent at times. Treble was crisp and clean, if the unit’s reproduction of 808 State’s percussion and the brass instruments of the Ohio Players’With award-winning acoustics and a striking mid-century modern design, the Klipsch Heritage Wireless Three II tabletop stereo speaker system can connect to almost anything, meaning you can bring your music to life from virtually any source - anywhere in your home. Retested the speaker for a power-saving feature. Changed the 'Power Saving' test result from 'N/A' to 'No' in the Battery box. This speaker features a built-in amplifier, delivering 60 watts of power, which allows for clear and powerful audio reproduction. The advanced acoustics technology ensures a balanced sound performance, with well-defined mids and crisp highs. The Three is a stereo tabletop system featuring two 2 1/4” full range drivers and a 5.25” long-throw woofer, bi-amplified for audio resolution and professionally tuned by Klipsch acousticians to deliver a premium audio experience. We must now delay no further and turn to the aesthetic of the Three II. Let me state from the outset that the Klipsch is not going to appeal to everybody. If you own of these sleek, modern edifices that Kevin McCloud wanders around eulogising about how the owner “has used light as a texture”, this is not the product for you. In a world of curves, recessed controls and soft touch plastics, the Three II sits like a plate of kidneys at a vegan food festival.

As for the soundstage, The Three impressed us on the width and depth of its sound - especially given its size. Despite the fact that this isn't a 360 degree speaker, like the Solis SO-7000 ( full review here), we could have been fooled into believing it was, given how impressed we were with its powers and abilities to create such a wide field, and demonstrate power usually seen in much larger speakers. Whether you're standing directly in front of The Three or off to the side, you'll get a balanced sound that beats out most speakers in this price range.

If you have access to a Chromecast Audio though, the Klipsch is even better. Spend a little time listening this way and it becomes clear that the Three II has made what might look like a weakness into a potential strength. The fact you can attach any of the voice assistant products to it rather than having to go with an inbuilt option is something that renders it rather flexible. It would be wonderful if it could power those units too but it’s clever nonetheless. The USB input is also effective. I’m not completely sure how many people will use it but it delivers on the promise of being able to send Hi-Res audio to the Three II. If you are looking for an intriguingly different computer speaker, it makes the Klipsch a fine choice although I’m still tempted to say that an optical connection might have seen more use. In addition to its audio capabilities, the Klipsch The Three II also features a retro design, with a wooden cabinet and metal knobs. The speaker is available in a variety of colors to suit different style preferences. The Three sounds much better if we provide it with a Wi-Fi signal, so it’s worth taking a moment to configure the network connection. The sound diameter is warm and pleasant to listen to. Human voices sound very coherent and natural, and the high detail and outstanding separation only reinforce positive feelings. Of course, a good stereo system will offer us a higher sound culture and stage experience, although it is hard to objectively compare the sound classes of such different audio systems. High tones are slightly brightened and abundant. Klipsch does not withdraw anything, it does not hide or mask anything. It provides everything that we should hear in the upper registers. This being a Klipsch, it also proudly boasts of state-of-the-art sound, with two 2 1/4” full-range drivers and a 5.25” long-throw woofer. As the brand describes it, “Bi-amplified for audio resolution, the Three II offers an unrivaled sound experience to transport you into the recording studio with the musicians.” Let’s see how this classically styled, front-firing Klipsch device fares in our rigorous DXOMARK Audio testing protocol.Incorporating luxury materials such as real wood veneer and tactile spun copper switches and knobs, the Klipsch Heritage Wireless series of powered audio systems blends the acoustics and classic design legacy of Paul W. Klipsch with the latest technologies available today. Klipsch have continued to release products from what we like to call the ‘The’ line. We already have The One, The Three, and The Sixes, and the latest release is The Fives. Although these are not available at retail at the time of writing, they look intriguing: a pair of do-it-all bookshelf speakers that are fully wireless. What’s especially interesting about these is that they have an HDMI ARC input, meaning they can be used with your TV as well as in a traditional hi-fi setup. Klipsch want them to replace the soundbar in your living room. We haven’t had a chance to test these yet, but if you are looking for a set of wireless speakers that are a little more fully featured than The Three, it may be worth waiting for The Fives. Also, we have no idea what will happen when Klipsch start releasing the second and third generation of this line of products. You could have a situation where there are product names like The Fives Two, or The One Three. The mind boggles.
