About this deal

In October 2023, the show announced that it would be launching a German production, which is scheduled to premiere in October 2024 at the Operettenhaus in Hamburg. [37] [38] Planned Japan production (TBA) [ edit ] Juliette is a novel written by the Marquis de Sade and published 1797– 1801, accompanying de Sade's 1797 version of his novel Justine. While Justine, Juliette's sister, was a virtuous woman who consequently encountered nothing but despair and abuse, Juliette is an amoral nymphomaniac murderer who is successful and happy. The full title of the novel in the original French is L'Histoire de Juliette ou les Prospérités du vice, and the English title is "Juliette, or Vice Amply Rewarded" (versus "Justine, or Good Conduct Well-Chastised"). As many other of his works, Juliette follows a pattern of violently pornographic scenes followed by long treatises on a broad range of philosophical topics, including theology, morality, aesthetics, naturalism and also Sade's dark, fatalistic view of world metaphysics. Juliet premiered at the Manchester Opera House, running from 10 September to 12 October 2019. [9] The cast starred Miriam-Teak Lee as Juliet. The rest of the cast included Oliver Tompsett as Shakespeare, Cassidy Janson as Anne/April, Melanie La Barrie as Angelique the Nurse, David Bedella as Lance, Jordan Luke Gage as Romeo, Arun Blair-Mangat as May and Tim Mahendran as Francois. [4] West End (2019–2023) [ edit ] Branding as seen at the Shaftesbury Theatre, May 2022

The show really has something for everyone. Based on one of Shakespeare’s classic stories Romeo and Juliet, this is a fun and contemporary retelling from Juliet’s perspective. Follow along on the journey as she moves to the city of Paris, leaves the past behind her in Verona and gets a second chance at rewriting her life without Romeo. Corrupt Church: All clergymen in the book, from Jesuit monks to archbishops to the Pope himself, are all treated as atheist libertines who simply use the Bible as a tool to legitimize their tyranny. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about the romance between two Italian youths from feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. In her search for work and shelter Justine constantly fell into the hands of rogues who would ravish and torture her and the people she makes friends with. Justine was falsely accused of theft by Harpin and sent to jail expecting execution. She had to ally herself with a Miss Dubois, a criminal who helped her to escape along with her band. To escape, Miss Dubois arranged a fire to break out in the prison, in which 21 people died. After escaping the band of Dubois, Justine wanders off and accidentally trespasses upon the lands of the count of Bressac.

A much extended and more graphic version, entitled Justine ou Les Malheurs de la vertu (1791) (English title: Justine, or The Misfortunes of the Virtue or simply Justine), was the first of de Sade's books published. Anarchy Is Chaos: De Sade's philosophy on government and society is explored; he believes that law is unfair and lawlessness is fair because the law is one-sided (only the law has the power to persecute and not vice versa) while lawlessness allows everyone to victimize each other equally. Simone de Beauvoir wrote a notable essay on de Sade, "Faut-il brûler Sade? ("Should we burn Sade"), published in 1955. She argues that, beyond the scandalous element, de Sade uses to Justine to reconcile individual pleasure with societal existence and to explore an ethical dimension to libertine philosophy. The book ends with Juliette being caught by the authorities and sentenced to death for her crimes. However, the final chapter reveals that she has managed to escape and continues to live her life as a libertine.

Le second fut l'Académie des Dames, ouvrage dont le plan est bon, mais l'exécution mauvaise; fait par un homme timide qui avait l'air de sentir la vérité, mais qui n'osait la dire, et d'ailleurs, plein de bavardage. Does Not Like Men: Clairwil makes many long-winded monologues about how much she hates men and seeks to avenge the eternity of female oppression by sadistically butchering little boys and grown men alike. She isn't, however, opposed to carving up females either. The ensemble features Ebony Clarke, Bessy Ewa, Collette Guitart, Cassandra Lee, Nathan Louis-Fernand, Zara MacIntosh, Carl Man, Christian Maynard, Rachel Moran, Owen Saward, Aaron Shales, Benjamin Terry and Suki Wong, who join Ivan De Freitas, Rhian Duncan, Alex Tranter, Sophie Usher and Rhys Wilkinson. May grows angry at Francois for ignoring his feelings for them and for still planning on marrying Juliet ("Whataya Want From Me"), while Juliet complains to May that Romeo lied to her. Francois grows worried, as he hasn't told Juliet about his feelings for May.

The story provides examples of:

Justine (Thérèse or Sophie in the first version) and Juliette were the daughters of Monsieur de Bertole. Bertole was a widower banker who fell in love with another man's lover. The man, Monsieur de Noirseuil, in the interest of revenge, pretended to be his friend, made sure he became bankrupt and eventually poisoned him, leaving the girls orphans. Juliette and Justine lived in a nunnery, where the abbess of the nunnery corrupted Juliette (and attempted to corrupt Justine too). However, Justine was sweet and virtuous. When the abbess found out about Bertole's death, she threw both girls out. Juliette's story is told in another book and Justine continues on in pursuit of virtue, beginning from becoming a maid in the house of the usurer Harpin, which is where her troubles begin anew. Juliet premiered at the Manchester Opera House in September 2019, before transferring to the West End in November 2019. At the 2020 Laurence Olivier Awards, & Juliet received 9 nominations and won 3 awards, including Best Actress in a Musical for Miriam-Teak Lee in the title role. [1] [2] The West End production also received a record-breaking 13 nominations at the 2020 WhatsOnStage Awards, ultimately winning 6 awards. [3] Synopsis [ edit ] Act One [ edit ] The essay ( Excursus II) "Juliette or Enlightenment and Morality" in Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno's Dialectic of Enlightenment (1947) analyses Juliette as the embodiment of the philosophy of enlightenment. They write: "she demonises Catholicism as the most-up-to-date mythology -- and along with it, civilisation as a whole. Her comportment is enlightened and efficient as she goes about her work of sacrilege … She favours system and consequence." [2] [3] See also [ edit ] It is unknown when exactly Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet. Juliet's Nurse refers to an earthquake she says occurred 11 years ago. [26] This may refer to the Dover Straits earthquake of 1580, which would date that particular line to 1591. Other earthquakes—both in England and in Verona—have been proposed in support of the different dates. [27] But the play's stylistic similarities with A Midsummer Night's Dream and other plays conventionally dated around 1594–95, place its composition sometime between 1591 and 1595. [28] [b] One conjecture is that Shakespeare may have begun a draft in 1591, which he completed in 1595. [29]

Historical Domain Character: Catherine the Great, Pope Pius VI, and Cardinal de Bernis make an appearance. Naturally, they get a Historical Villain Upgrade. And according to Wikipedia, Princess Sophia is supposed to be the real-life Princess Wilhelmina with the names changed. If one removes the narrative and pornographic scenes of Juliette, what would be left could perhaps be the ultimate example of Sade's lifelong philosophy. Juliette holds that "nature" (often referred to as 'she' by the characters) is the prime mover of all human experience, and through implanting sexual appetites and desires in man it has thereby justified all sexual depravities. Sade argues that desire is an intrinsically natural phenomenon and therefore is wholly justifiable, no matter how violent or depraved, for it has come from nature, and by establishing rules such as morality and political law which prevent one from exercising one's desires, mankind is offending nature. Publication and reception Juliet is now playing at the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre ! Juliet strikes out on her own journey of healing, romance and self-discovery in the City of Lights.
