In 1992 aged eighteen years old, David J Gatward published his first work. From then on he was hooked and became obsessed with writing stories and seeing them in print. He would go on to publish several more titles and hold several jobs in publishing. It was during this time that he published the “Dead Trilogy” under Hodder Children. Since then, Gatward has gone on to write for several publishers that include Oxford University Press, Puffin and Random House. He has also worked as a ghost writer and had several of his short stories published even though many of these are now out of print. But his efforts paid off as some of the short horror fiction he wrote during this time were featured in the “HellRaiser” DVD box set. In 2020, he wrote “Mission Creep” of the “Padre” series of novels that would then be followed by the very popular “DCI Harry Grimm” series of novels.MAY-JUL: JOHN CARPENTER SEASON – They Live, Big Trouble In Little China, Escape From New York, The Thing (The Dancehouse) GERRY ANDERSON MARATHON – Filmed In Supermarionation, Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlett, Fireball XL-5, Four Feather Falls, Joe 90, Supercar, The Secret Service (Gorilla) David J Gatward’s “Grimm Up North” introduces Detective Crime Inspector Harry Grimm. He works for Bristol major crime but out of the blue, his obnoxious boss posts to North Yorkshire to the town of Wensleydale. Harry is a man that prefers to work his cases on his own as he believes he is more effective that way. Nonetheless, like many genius detectives, he is not a particularly likable person. He had been wounded by IED while he was in the Parachute Regiment and this gives him an intimidating and severe look. When he arrives at his new work station, he despairs as it is a sleepy outpost with sleepy villages, lots of sheep, and rolling hills that he does not believe could conjure up a major investigation. In the village, almost everyone knows everyone and the biggest crimes reported to local law enforcement are sheep stealing. Wensleydale does not even have a police station and he learns that he will be based at a small room in the community centre. But then his first day gets very interesting when a girl on her way to school goes missing. This results in an interesting chain of events with twists and trunks that are enough to make one dizzy. I have to admit I struggled with the first few chapters of this book, it really didn't grab my attention though something told me to carry on reading it, it could get better. It’s Grim Up North” is a song by The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (The JAMs). The song was originally released as a limited edition “Club Mix” in December 1990 with Pete Wylie on vocals. A re-recorded version with Bill Drummond on vocals was released commercially in October 1991. These recordings were the first releases by Drummond and his creative partner Jimmy Cauty under the JAMs moniker since the 1988 compilation album Shag Times, and the last under that name; in the meantime they had operated as the Timelords and the KLF. The 1991 single release reached No. 10 on the UK Singles Chart and entered the top 10 in Denmark and Finland.

In fact I wish the whole book had been from Jim's point of view. I much preferred his cheerful personality but underlying mysterious and dark past. He intrigued me far more than anything else in the book. Definitely more than the action man, emotional, shouty Grimm. This seems like a harsh rate, but I treat one star as meaning 'Did not like', and being honest, I did not like it, though there was definitely something in the bones of it that did work for me. a b Medsker, David (6 August 2008). I've been auditioning a few new-to-me mystery series for my reading pleasure and here comes another one. This one is by David J. Gatward, another writer that I had never read, never even heard of as far as I can remember. It features DCI Harry Grimm as its main character and is set in Yorkshire. This is the first book in the series. Gatward writes with a light hand and there is quite a bit of humor in the tale he tells here. JAN: Four Flies On Grey Velvet + Dellamorte Dellamore [The Cemetery Man] (The Dancehouse); Dark Star + Let There Be Light: The Odyssey Of Dark Star (Anthony Burgess Institute) FEB: WEREWOLVES MOVIE MARATHON – The Howling, Dog Soldiers, An American Werewolf In London, Another Wolfcop (ODEON Manchester Great Northern) In a 2007 article on songs about northern England, The Guardian said that "It's Grim Up North" "wrongfoots the listener. A deadpan catalogue of northern towns, recited over rainy-motorway techno, suddenly blossoms into a rendition of Blake's Jerusalem, as if arriving at some socialist rave utopia.". [23] Harry has been a pain in the ass for his boss on the Bristol Major Investigations Team and when he has the opportunity to get Harry out of his hair he takes it, sending him north to a town called Hawes in Wensleydale on secondment. It's a place that is famous for its cheese and its scenery. It's the kind of Yorkshire setting that is so popular with writers of British crime fiction, so this all feels very familiar.MANCHESTER SCIENCE FESTIVAL – Brazil + 12 Monkeys; Total Recall + Starship Troopers; Alien + Prometheus (Science and Industry Museum) Bubbling Down Under Week Commencing November 25, 1991". While the plot unfolds with engaging momentum, there are instances where the pacing stumbles, momentarily disrupting the immersive experience. However, Gatward's narrative resilience ensures that the story swiftly regains its captivating stride. The novel's strength lies in its ability to balance the dark with the ordinary, creating a narrative that is both believable and thought-provoking.

Gatward also writes The Dead series and the Booksurfers series. However, his most renowned work is the DCI Harry Grimm series. First dated July 8, 2020; Grimm Up North is the first book in his DCI Harry Grimm series. Set in North Yorkshire; its protagonist is Harry Grimm who is a Bristol-based detective chief inspector attached to the homicide-related Major Investigation Team. An ex-military man who was wounded in action, Harry is mandated—after being transferred upcountry following his colleague Detective Superintendent Alice Firbank’s recommendation—to find a fleeing schoolgirl called Sophie Hodgson, aged fifteen. This is the first in a series and I absolutely loved it, and I loved Harry Grimm. He's different to the usual fictional cops. For a start he has a face only a mother could love after being wounded by an IED while serving with the Paras, and he is extremely grumpy and sarcastic. But he is also very smart, and a damn good copper. The rest of the team are well drawn and realistic too and I loved the bromance that developed between Grimm and PCSO, Jim.I liked the setting, I fell into the little quaint village immediately and pictured some of the scenes vividly. As the first book, it naturally introduces the recurring cast, all of whom turn out to be pretty credible cops, considering Harry's expectations, and you have to wonder if the BBC might want to give this a look. After all, they've already got the sets built...
