About this deal

Unscrew: Then try to unscrew it once again and carefully loosen the glow plug out of the cylinder head with a suitable tool. (Do not exceed the maximum loosening torque. Always stop before reaching the tightening torque, if necessary try once again by heating up.) Our new reamer comes with a proper size / material cleaning brush and PDF instructions on how to properly remove your glow plugs AND use this reamer on the following models: 1980-1985 617 and 617 diesel engine with cast iron cylinder heads. This includes 1978 to 1980 300SD, 1980 to 1983 240D, 1980 to 1985 300D/300CD/300TD and 1981 to 1985 300SD. First off: Only remove and fit glow plugs using a manual torque wrench. What must I do when the tightening Torque has been reached ? The controller uses this information to adjust the current on-board voltage to the glow plugs, optimising engine operation. It requests vital information from the ECU, including glow requests, engine speed, coolant temperature and the amount of injected fuel to an exact desired glow plug voltage. The Glow Plug Control Unit then uses this information to adjust the current on-board voltage to this value, optimising engine operation. Did you run injector cleaner or 2 stroke before hand to try to decoke the glow plugs and make them easier to get out. MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

When screwing in new glow plugs, the tightening torque stated by the vehicle manufacturer must be observed at all times and performed with the appropriate reamer. You're past the hood, you made it even further and you've cleared your way to the Glow Plug. Now is the time you need to manage the torque. Here is our step-by-step guide to removing the plug: PERFORMANCE: This tool and procedure can improve cold engine starts, reduce shaking and missing at start-up and reduce engine smoke on those cold mornings. THE NUMBER ONE REASON FOR PREMATURE GLOW PLUG FAILURE IS EXCESS CARBON BUILDUP IN THE CHAMBER! Almost every old diesel needs to have this done and the sooner the better! I guarantee that you will be very pleased with how this reamer performs - especially if you have used other reamers in the past.Installation and removal only with the appropriate custom tool. Push the tool onto the Integrated Pressure Sensor Glow Plug so that the glow plug‘s hexagon head is completely covered; note the torque. The fat bits of the glow plug rails that say left and right go towards the front of the engine! That should save you 30 minutes of faff!

I knew there had to be a way to build a better reamer at a better price. Because of these issues you can see why I went to work and engineered this new tool. I am proud to offer the following key features :Warming up: Run engine until it is warm or use a separate cable to supply current to the functional glow plugs for 4-5 minutes (only possible for glow plugs with 11 – 12 V operating voltage) - the glow plug will heat up and burn loose. For those of you that consider changing glow plugs on the Tdv6 engine - I just did mine and here's in brief how to: First clean the glow plug channel and the thread in the cylinder head to remove oil and combustion products. Then screw in the glow plug by hand. Important: Make sure that no dirt enters the combustion chamber. If the fuel system has been opened, also pay attention to cleanliness and seal the cables with a cap, if possible. They all came out quite easily. However I did apply the penetrating oil before as I wrote and gave it 2 applications and 2 days to do its work. The instructions that come with the vibro-impact tool say to start with 10 Nm and work your way up to 30 Nm if you have to but not recommended to use 40 Nm. When 2 plugs did not move on 10 Nm and initially neither with 20 Nm I used the vibro-impact tool in the FASTEN direction for a short blast. When I then reversed direction they spun out first very slowly but came out nicely.

Reading other posts on the subject made me buy the Vibro Impact tool (actually bought the full extractor kit as well just in case) and the Kroil penetration oil. The most challenging of the whole job was to get the oil separator out However, before jumping into the job, you want to make sure you have a Manual Torque Wrench, and the right glow plugs for your vehicle. From advanced Integrated Pressure Glow Plugs to Standard Glow plugs, Champion ®has you covered.Instead of an aluminum threaded housing we use a steel housing that meets original glow plug specifications. This means you are less likely to cross thread the reamer and the threads hold up better because they are steel. Cars may have become more complex over the years, yet changing your vehicle's glow plugs is, in most cases, still a job that you can handle yourself. In particular after baking (coking) between the glow rod and the cylinder head, the cylinder head bore is often soiled by residues from burning or dirt particles. Such coking can easily and safely be removed from cylinder heads with 10-mm threads. Carbon can be the root cause of a problem, acting as a heat soak, causing hard starting and premature heating coil failure. A proprietary glow plug reamer set should be used with silicone free grease to remove the carbon (Fig 3). A melted or broken heater tube tip is a sign of over voltage (fault with the control system), or abnormal combustion (this can be the result of incorrect injection timing, flow rate or excessive lubricating oil entering the combustion chamber). A swollen heater tube tip can also be a sign of over voltage. I was stressed too that one or more plugs would snap, that is why I bought the full extraction kit as well.

Slightly loosen: Apply a generous amount of synthetic oil to the glow plug thread and leave to act, if possible over night, or longer.

But before you start, here's important information you need to bear in mind: When replacing Glow Plugs: Keep to the Torques! Section 1: Instructions for Glow Plugs (Standard, Ceramic and Instant Start System) Removing the Old Glow Plugs
