About this deal

Webbing straps both inside the main compartment and on the outside are MOLLE-compatible, including a couple at the bottom designed to carry a sleeping bag or mat if you intend shooting prone.

Driven (Shooting):A form of live game shooting where the guns are positioned in a line or certain area and the birds are pushed towards them by the beaters. Ground Game:Often off limits on a game day, this term usually refers to any game that lives on the ground such as rabbits, foxes, badgers and deer. If you are allowed to shoot ground game such as foxes, please make sure you take extra precautions and are certain it is a safe shot. If you needed to load up with two water bottles, two boxes of shells, a lunch, a med kit, GPS unit, and a half-dozen birds in your game bag, this is the vest you’d want for the job. The downside is that the vest is a bit heavier and bulkier. But hey, if you want to hunt like a guide, you’ve got to be tough like a guide. I scored each of these categories on a 1 to 5 scale, with 5 being the highest score. You’ll see the scores for each vest reflected in the “Report Card” section of the write-up. Game Starter feeds are available in a choice of two protein levels and two crumb sizes which can then beQuarry: The animal that is being hunted or shot, for example pheasant or partridge. On a game day the upmost respect must be shown to your quarry. Birds should be handled delicately and not thrown on the floor or allowed to be damaged by dogs. The birds from a game shoot are generally sold to a game dealer. followed by a mini pellet to encourage maximum intake and rapid growth. Brooder areas should be prepared at Final Rise is a Utah-based company and a relative newcomer to the upland bird hunting market. Their vest’s name, the Summit, hints at the company’s spirit. Their gear was designed for hunting high-country chukars and mountain grouse. But this vest works equally well while tromping through cattail sloughs in South Dakota or busting through popple stands for grouse in Minnesota. The Summit is my editor’s choice winner because it has a minimalist style and fit while also offering all the space and support required to load up heavy for a full day of hunting. The Summit works well for a wide variety of upland hunting. Alex Robinson Poult Release Pellets are designed to help poults adjust to life in the wild – grain can be added later.

Breeks:Breeks are a type of three-quarter length trouser than sit just below the knee. They are designed to allow the shooter to move freely and are incredibly comfortable. Plus twos are a type of breeks that are a little bit loser and have an extra 2 inches of material to fold over the know and plus fours have 4 inches of excess.Poaching: When a gun shoots a bird that was heading for their neighbour. Although this is quite acceptable on simulated game days, this is a real faux pas when shooting the real thing. The etiquette for a game day is to only shoot birds that are flying within your area and not shoot more than your share of the bag. Hobbling for miles on sore feet is no fun, so wearing the right boots is imperative. They should have a substantial sole that protects your feet from rough terrain while offering enough support to prevent twisted ankles. Some hunters like flexible boots, while others prefer them to feel like leg casts. I wear Filson Insulated Highlanders for hunting quail and pheasant in cold weather, and when I’m hunting chukar in the steep stuff I prefer stiff mountaineering-style boots. Elevenses:A phrase I am sure most people have come across and a very important part of any shoot day! A morning tea break usually held after the second drive, giving shooters the chance to indulge in some refreshments. It is very traditional to serve light nibbles such as sausage rolls or pork pies, with sloe gin, champagne, tea, coffee and soft drinks.

Available in a huge range of colours and camo patterns, this outdoor bag is made for such situations. At 55 litres it’s big enough to carry everything you need for a full day in the field. For starters, the material is designed to not only be water-resistant, but to minimise rustling. And if you get caught out in a deluge it takes seconds to fit an elasticated nylon cover. Walked Up / Rough Shooting: This form of game shooting differs from driven shooting as there are no beaters. A group of guns will walk through the undergrowth and game cover and, with the help of dogs, flush the birds themselves. There are no guarantees in game shooting, but even less so with walked up as you never know what birds you will find. Drive:A period of the day when the guns are on their pegs in a certain area of land and the beaters are driving the birds towards them. A drive will usually start when the guns reach their pegs (live on peg) and will end when a horn or whistle is sounded. There will usually be between four to six drives in a day. Game Grower diets are formulated to take the birds through from four weeks to release. The diets contain the optimum balance of protein and micronutrients to ensure good release weights, correct development and good feathering. If you are new to game shooting it can seem like a minefield of etiquette and traditions, and some of the language and technical terms can be difficult to understand. Here are some of the most common phrases that you are likely to hear on your first day in the field. What gear does an upland hunter need? That question covers an enormous variety of habitat, weather, birds, and preferences. While gear requirements vary for hunting quail in Texas, grouse in New England, chukar on the Snake River, or pheasant in the Dakotas, the following items go with me on all of my hunts, regardless of where or when. After testing a variety of vests we found the Final Rise Summit Vest to be the best overall upland hunting vest. Final Thoughts on the Best Upland Hunting Vests

If you have any questions or queries about game shooting please don't hesitate to get in touch with the OSS Team. We are all passionate and experienced game shots, and would be more than happy to help. The dog tops this list, because seeing great dog work makes all the miles driven and hiked worthwhile. Even if I miss every bird I swing on, if I’ve seen great dog work, the day was successful. Pup might not agree, but he’ll eat a steak for dinner if that happens! The fact of the matter is that despite reminiscing about the good old days, many of us want to take advantage of modern technological advancements, and that means carrying extra gear. Peg Draw: In the morning on a shoot day guns will choose their peg at random. This will give them the peg number that they will start on. Each shoot is different, but you will generally move up or down 2 numbers for the next drive. For example, if you start on Peg 4 on drive one, you will stand at Peg 6 on drive two and Peg 8 on drive three. A bird hunting vest should last for many years. Since I could only hunt with most of this field for one season, I evaluated durability based on the quality of the material and strength of the build. If any vests started showing early wear and tear, they lost points in durability. DesignDouble Gunning:Most common on big days with a large bag, the shooter will have two guns and a loader. The loader will re-load one gun whilst the shooter is using the other, and then they will swap. This allows the shooter to have a fully loaded gun at all times. I’ve actually hunted with this vest for several seasons now, and it has held up admirably. It has a limited storage capacity, but it does carry weight quite well. I’ve had no problem hauling around three big roosters in it. I love that the game bag has a blood-resistant lining. After a successful hunt, I’ll wipe it clean with a paper towel and avoid that blood-stained game bag look.
