In college, Dav met a teacher who encouraged him to write and illustrate for kids. He took her advice and created his first book, World War Won, which won a national competition in 1986. Dav made many other books before being awarded the California Young Reader Medal for Dog Breath (1994) and the Caldecott Honor for The Paperboy (1996). The mythology of Dog Man is a once very straightforward and very complicated: on the one hand, he’s the hero the city needs, which just so happens to be a combination of a cop and his specially-trained police dog, surgically combined after an explosion. What else does anyone need to know? Of course it’s the Greg the dog’s head on the cop’s body — what kind of surgical reconstruction wouldn’t go for that combo? Dog Man Day is the umbrella title given to the wider promotional push for Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under The Sea. Despite what it might sound like, there’s no one singular day that all things Dog Man will be celebrated; instead, locales across the world are being encouraged to host their own Dog Man events, with publisher Scholastic providing event guides, activities, and other resources to help. Stores throughout the U.S. will be hosting Dog Man Day events featuring exclusive editions of the new book and giveaways, while public and school libraries are also encouraged to get in on the act with their own events. More exciting news about Dav Pilkey’s books will be announced on Dav Pilkey’s Epic Comic Club, a free online platform where kids can create their own comics in a safe environment, and access exclusive content including Dav Pilkey’s read-aloud and how-to-draw videos, and more. Launched in August 2022, Dav Pilkey’s Epic Comic Club has reached kids, parents, caregivers, and educators in 153 countries to date. El Club de Cómics de Supergatito: Colaboraciones ( Cat Kid Comic Club: Collaborations American Spanish Version) - September 5, 2023 To celebrate the publication of Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea and the return of Dog Man on stage, the cast of Dog Man: The Musical will make a special appearance at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City in late February, as well as a special performance and book giveaway for kids from New York City Title 1 schools in attendance at New World Stages on March 30th. This special performance is part of TheaterWorksUSA’s not-for-profit mission and “Cause for Applause” Fund that makes theater accessible for all children. The design for the flying submarine used by Uncle Larry is inspired from the illustrations produced for a Japanese publication. The artworks are created by an artist who goes to sign every paintings as "Kyo-62". How popular is Dog Man, really, though?
The sub shrinks down to normal, Chief and Nurse Lady rejoin, everyone works the rest of the day to start restoration of Petey’s Lab. By night, everyone heads over to Dog Man’s house for supper. Petey still doesn’t know why everyone is helping him, a jailbird. Li’l Petey says it is why they are there to help each other. Sarah dips her feet in the water of the lake (which Petey presumably cleaned of pollution) and makes it an analogy about giving more in life. Sarah once again teaches the lesson better than Petey. The characters are seen walking home through the view of the lake. Dav's stories are semi-autobiographical and explore universal themes that celebrate friendship, empathy, and the triumph of the good-hearted.
And Dog Man and his troupe are likely to be moving on to the big screen in the future: a feature film adaptation of their escapades is currently in the works from DreamWorks Animation. A few nights ago, my grandson wasn't feeling well. And he asked me to read aloud the Dogman book he was halfway through. Oh, man. Not my genre, not my age group. But I'll do it.
