A piece of low-grade corundum (sapphire) would tell you more. If the gem scratches corundum, it's diamond, moissanite, or white sapphire. Test #13: Shatter Test With fire, water, and the potential for catastrophe, this test is a dramatic way to spot a fake diamond! Photo by Arivumathi. Licensed under CC By-SA 3.0. What You'll Need

If you've inherited or received a gift of gems or jewelry, you're probably wondering whether the stones are real diamonds, other white gems, or manufactured imitations. If the facet edges of your gem are rounded, it's certainly not a diamond. However, most imitations can have sharp facet edges. GIA uses the 4cs to determine diamond quality: color, carat weight, clarity, and cut. In addition, GIA may evaluate the diamond’s fluorescence, polish, symmetry, and proportions. If you’re still unsure about whether floating diamond rings are for you, here are some pros to consider: The Center Diamond Will Look Larger If you're not familiar with these nuances and have no known diamonds to compare with test stones, this isn't the best way to spot a fake diamond. Test #8: Facet Edges Take a look at the rounded facet edges in these rhinestones. The edges of a diamond would be sharp and crisp. Photo by Rhonda. Licensed under CC By-SA 2.0. What You'll NeedHold the gem in pliers over the flame and heat the gem for about 40 seconds. Then drop the gem into the water. What do the Results Mean? If you are selling a diamond, investing in a GIA Diamond Grading Report can help you justify your diamond’s financial value. If you are buying or already own a diamond, a grading report can give you more information about your stone. The float is fitted with a 2mm diameter hollow Hi Viz tip to make the best use of available light and is finished off with an extra strong stainless steel side eye securely fitted and glued 15mm deep into the floats body. There is also the option of an extra side eye which can be fitted at no extra cost to the corner of the body if required. Typically a very short float which is tailored to fishing in shallow water, for example to islands or down the margins. Fish these with a simple bulk shot close to the hook and use slightly heavier, such as 0.4g, even in 1ft of water. This is to anchor the bait in amongst the turbulence of big fish feeding in shallow swims. We recommend: Cleaning a floating diamond ring is no different than cleaning any other type of ring. Use warm water, gentle soap, and a soft brush to scrub. Pay special attention to tight areas, like where the metal and stone meet in a tension setting. Then rinse and pat dry with a soft cloth.

However, if you've seen facet doubling, the gem might be moissanite, white zircon, white topaz, quartz, or white sapphire. Test #3: UV Fluorescence A simple ultraviolet (UV) light bulb can give you some information about your gem. Photo by Kallemax. Public Domain. What You'll Need Also known as the transparency test, the newspaper test is a sure-fire way to tell if diamonds are real. All you need is a newspaper and the stone in question. Diamonds conduct and disperse heat immediately, making it impossible for the fog to linger on their surface.

Let’s explore all of the different ways you can determine if yourdiamond is legit. Ask for aGIA Diamond Grading Report As with clarity, the diamond in a floating engagement ring is the focal point. Because of this you may want to choose one with a higher color rating so it looks as white as possible. And the whiter your diamond appears, the more it will sparkle. In spite of their fame as the hardest material on earth, diamonds aren't indestructible. They can chip, and diamond can still scratch diamond. So, if you've found a chip on the gem, it could still be a diamond. Nevertheless, a highly abraded surface indicates a softer material. Test #9: Weighing and Measuring Calipers can measure gemstones, like this blue topaz, very accurately. Photo by Mauro Cateb. Licensed under CC By-SA 3.0. What You'll Need Real diamonds should not float. To perform the floating test, all you need is your stone and a glass of water. If the diamond is real, it will not react to the sudden change in temperature. The diamond should not have any changes. All you may see is a bit of residual ash from the flame.

A newspaper or a piece of paper with a small dot drawn on it. This test is only appropriate for loose gems, not set ones. How to Perform the Test This test is not always foolproof. Some materials that make up fake diamonds, such as cubic zirconia and moissanite, can sink if they are heavy enough. It’s best to combine the floating test with another at-home evaluation to tell if your diamond is real. Measure your gem across its widest point. Then, place the loose gem on the scale. Compare the weight in carats and the width to this chart of standard gem sizes. What do the Results Mean?

Ideally, a full gemstone hardness kit. Otherwise, some material of known hardness, as high as possible. How to Test for Hardness Using the gem, try to make a small scratch on the material. Look closely for a scratch mark. What do the Results Mean? Another method to determine if your diamond is real or fake is to use a lighter to light the stone for about 30 to 40 seconds before dropping it in cold water. If it's a fake diamond, it will shatter to pieces but a real diamond won't have a reaction to it. This is because weaker materials will not be able to handle the rate at which it expands and then contracts due to the heat of the fire. Real diamonds, however, have been formed under intense pressure and heat underground from billions of years ago. While this is a more accurate way to test a stone's authenticity, it can be dangerous to use fire, so be sure to use proper safety measures and use heat-resistant gloves when handling the diamond. Using a diamond scale

A long and stable float, developed for fishing baits such as meat, corn and pellets, when stable presentation is needed - the ultimate float for fishing short. If the gem shatters, it's certainly not a diamond. (It was probably cubic zirconia or glass). However, the test doesn't prove that a surviving gem is a diamond. Moissanite, white sapphire, white topaz, white spinel, YAG, and GGG all have low or no heat sensitivity and may survive this test. If the facets are always single and appear crisp, it could be diamond, cubic zirconia, white spinel, glass, gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG), or yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG). These people are pretty smart," he said of diamond miners, noting that years of experience have taught them many rules of thumb regarding the most likely places to look. Make sure the gem is clean before you start. (You don't want to mistake a spot of dirt for an imperfection). Look for imperfections in your gem, such as dark or light spots or tiny crystals in the gem. Take note if there's anything that looks like a bubble. The new lab experiments now show how molten carbonate reacts with other chemicals in Earth's lithosphere to release the gas, offering a likely mechanism for speeding up the dense magma. If you haven't found anything, it could be either a diamond or an imitation. Test #12: Scratch Test For the scratch test you should know the hardness of what your materials. There are plenty of natural gems with a strong resemblance to diamonds such as white topaz, white sapphire, and white zircon. GIA provides objective grading reports on the quality of diamonds. The statement does not offer an appraisal of financial value. GIA reports decipher real diamonds from fake ones andrecord any enhancements made to the stone.
