About this deal

The mystery surrounding the subject of the book ended on May 11, with the New York Times announcing it is a BTS book. The memoir, titled "Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS," is being released to celebrate BTS's 10th anniversary as a group. It'll be a particularly meaningful release for fans, as the group is currently on a temporary hiatus from making music as a group as they pursue solo projects and complete their mandatory service in the Korean military. In the book, BTS’s longtime interviewer Kang Myeongseok tells BTS’s story through interviews he conducted with its seven members through the past three years. Positives, though. Despite me not being a big fan of the author, he does seem to know the subject well. If only the framing would have been shifted from the growth in success to the personal growth the members have gone through during the time the book spans, it could have been much better. As things are, this is left mostly to the sidelines despite the book's unearned sentimentality. Because the K-pop competition was so fierce, the odds of success as a group were incredibly slim. BTS members struggled at first with impostor syndrome, performance flubs and bullying from the public. Even before they made their debut on a televised showcase, naysayers were already dragging the group in the comments sections of online forums. Their first gig brought in only about a dozen fans. I wonder when these men even had the time to work on this though, cause we've been drowning in new music and other content for a while like... but then again it's BTS and they never seem to stop working. Or maybe they've been at it for years and we only learned about it now, with the tannies you never know. 💜

I am so thankful to the members for getting our acts together, and I want to say how thankful I am to ARMY for always loving us.” The book is divided into seven chapters, each offering a unique perspective on BTS’s history. Starting from before their debut, the chapters are titled “Seoul,”“Why We Exist,”“Love, Hate, Army,”“Inside Out,”“A Flight That Never Lands,”“The World of BTS,” and “We Are.” Through interviews and personal stories, the members—RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—open up about their experiences, struggles, and growth as artists. a b "BTS book 'Beyond the Story,' source of Internet speculation, to be published July 9". That we’d done something together as a group⸺I was overwhelmed by that feeling, I think.” Most of the issues in this book boil down to the fact that it reads like an article, which is not surprising, given that the author is mostly a journalist. Though the comic-y and adjective-wrought writing style isn't something I'd enjoy even in an article, it becomes overbearing and too noticeable in a longer form, which it is clearly not meant for. Way too dramatic from the start in its vocabulary, it's constantly drainingly high-energy and doesn't leave space for the actual high points to shine. The article-ness is exacerbated by the previously mentioned number dropping and song descriptions. The book would have benefited from heavy editing and as it is, could have gotten the message across in half the length or less.I couldn't be glad in the moments I was supposed to be glad, and I couldn’t be happy in the moments I was supposed to be happy.” Beyond the often stirring reflections by RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, the stories in Beyond the Story are not exactly new to BTS’s fans.

I think it's no surprise to anyone that I finished this in one sitting, not even leaving my room to eat or drink water. Lots of things were happening, which overlapped with things like our standing at the time, and I think I was trying to hide. Inside my shell.”

When we get lots of awards like that... it got ridiculous. Because we’d said only the things we thought we could never achieve, and then we achieved all of them. I think it’s strange.” Beyond the Story: 10 Year Record of BTS is a 2023 biography about South Korean pop group BTS. The book is written by Kang Myeong-seok and BTS, and translated into English by Anton Hur in collaboration with Clare Richards and Slin Jung. It was released on July 9, 2023. [1] Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS” is the first biography of the group, published in time for their 10-year anniversary. Written over three years, the book weaves in an oral history with group interviews by the biography’s author, Myeongseok Kang. Fans might be surprised at the shaggy underdog tale contained therein. Here are some major takeaways. BTS was born in a K-pop dormitory At the end of the day, BTS has seven members. I believed the team couldn’t stay together if even one of us left.” When people kept asking us when we were debuting, to a trainee that’s really... that question is like a knife to the heart.”

Beyond the Story is being released in over 20 languages. One of the book’s three English translators, Anton Hur – the others are Slin Jung and Clare Richards – had said that the process was so swift that it involved translating the book as it was being written. This was because BTS’s company HYBE was keen to publish the book by July 9 – the 10-year anniversary of the creation of its fandom, ‘ARMY,’ which is now tens of millions strong. In many ways, this book is almost a singular recognition of how this enormous musical presence came to be with the power of its fans. BTS’s fans have translated their work, analysed it, pushed for radio play, streamed their music, and fiercely criticised racist and unfair critiques. In the book, members of the band note this in no uncertain terms. It wasn’t all adoration from there on out: The band came under fire for two songs that fans said perpetuated gender inequality and misogyny. The 2014 song “War of Hormones” featured lyrics that translate to “Girls are like an equation / us guys just do them (yup) / Imma give it to you girl right now / A woman is the best present.” And the 2015 song “Joke” includes lyrics that translate to “”You’re the best woman, the best vagina .... But now that I think about it, you were never the best / I will stop calling you best and instead call you gonorrhea.” Kang heads the Weverse Magazine, published by BTS’s own company. Celebrated as a music writer in South Korea, not much is known of him outside the country, other than the fact that he is the one journalist to whom all seven very private members of BTS have given lengthy interviews, full of passionate talk on what goes into their music. One of the standout features of this book is the inclusion of QR codes, allowing readers to access additional content online. This interactive element enhances the reading experience and makes it easier to dive deeper into BTS’s music and visual creations. The comprehensive timeline and album information serve as a valuable reference for fans who want to revisit key milestones in the group’s career. Suga traveled a similar path, using music to parse his emotions. Some are those felt by all humans: existential dread and the fear of failure. But others are more specific to the burdens carried by celebrities who suffer from relentless public cruelty. It’s why he tells Kang he has two dreams: one to still be performing on stage at an old age, and the other, to become a licensed psychological therapist to support those who come after him. 5. We really had almost no days off. So, at the time, I wondered whether it was right for a person to live life as exhausted as this.” The K-pop juggernaut known as BTS has dominated the American music scene in an unprecedented way. The group’s seven members — RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook — have performed at the Grammys and the American Music Awards, and most of their music videos have over 1 billion views on YouTube.
