About this deal

So yes, the BRS is an ultralight canister stove with the nearest competitor, the OLICAMP Ion Micro Titanium Stove, being nearly double the weight! How did I establish that Soto's claims of superior wind handling are true? By running simultaneous test after test after test. The stoves on this list weigh anywhere from an ounce to 2 pounds (but most are within the 3- to 9-ounce range). Some can fit in the palm of your hand, and some take up a bit more room. The Amicus will be far more consistent and predictable than other stoves, giving you the ability to a)plan more accurately, b) conserve fuel, and c) simmer better in wind. We were stunned at how fast bubbles began to dance in the pot, taking as few as just over two minutes to reach a rolling boil (depending on elevation and wind conditions). This makes it a solid choice for group trips where you need to whip up multiple meals fast. It also works great for melting large amounts of snow for water.

The butane or isobutane and propane gas mix varies from brand to brand. Fortunately most canister stoves like the BRS-3000T can be used with any brand of canister including Jetboil, MSR, Snow Peak, Optimus and other brands. Alcohol stoves are very light and simple. In the past they were the dominant choice for thru-hikers because of their weight, affordability, and readily available fuel in small towns. That’s not so much the case anymore. Over the past few years canister stoves have become much more common among thru-hikers because of their convenience, speed, weight, and safety. Also, it’s getting much easier to find isobutane canister fuel in small trail towns.

We did find it difficult to bring water to a simmer with this stove, and we found ourselves extinguishing the burner repeatedly in our attempts to reduce the heat output. Additionally, since the burner is so quiet (a plus while trying to be discrete around camp), it is often hard to know when it is still lit, or if you are just wasting fuel. With so much heat output, the pot also tends to get quite hot, so be careful when handling it. For a wood-burning stove, the BioLite also has an impressive boil time at a little over 4.5 minutes. In terms of performance, the stove boiled fairly well and simmered well too. It’s also a similar price point to other stoves that are similar in size. The Pinnacle made this list because of its compact nature — it’s one of the smallest and lightest stoves out there.

My "baseline" stove was the Optimus Crux. Both the Crux and the Amicus are rated at 10,200 BTU's. In still air, they both boil water in about the same time; there's no significant difference in boil time between the two. Lightweight, works in the wind, great piezo igniter, fuel efficient, very stable for a small canister stove The other thing to watch out for with the BRS-3000T is the length of the pot supports. At only 2-inches in diameter, you need to be thoughtful about what cookware you choose to use. You won’t want to use anything too heavy, but you also want to make sure that your cookware is stable enough so when the water boils, the pot doesn’t become unstable and tip. Part of why the Amicus has such good pot stability is that it has not the typical three but rather four pot supports. The Amicus also has more "teeth" on it's pot supports than most stoves, and those teeth are precisely made, gripping pots better. Many pot supports on other stoves are a bit rounded off, and they just don't grip as well.

Stability

That said, "good" and "perfect" are not one in the same. The Stealth ignition is the best in the business (nobody else really comes close), but even the best ignition is subject to breakage or failure. Always carry a second (or third) source of ignition such as a lighter, matches, or fire steel. The BRS-3000T is as intuitive as most other canister stoves like the Soto Amicus or the Snow Peak Giga Power Stove. Where you may need to get creative is protecting the BRS-3000T from the wind. There are various ways you can do this using a foam sleeping pad, a custom made windshield, or your body. Just be sure to allow the heat of the stove to escape so the canister doesn’t overheat. Versatility With the spark point of the Stealth ignition located in the center of the burner, it is not directly in the flame, giving it an edge in reliability over other ignition systems.

During testing, we found the pressure regulator did equate to more consistent boil and simmer capabilities and helped reduce the impact of cold and wind on stove performance. It also boiled faster than all but one other stove on this list. Canister gas stoves generally cook well. They have a highly adjustable flame. If you adjust the flame well and have appropriate cookware, there isn't really much in the way of limitations to what you can cook. The Amicus is no exception. On the Amicus, I was able to get a barely there flame capable of a very low simmer. Always read the instructions. (Yes, even if you are familiar with camp stoves.) The instructions will tell you how to prime your stove, and might even have tips on cleaning and repair. Not everyone needs the tiniest stoveon the market. Especially if you camp year-round, you’ll want to choose a four-season stove, or one better rated for cold performance. From my personal experience so far, I think it is plenty durable. I’ve had it along on many sea kayaking trips and beach campouts and it’s held up very well with no signs of rust or corrosion, and no problems with clogging up. While they’re far from the most convenient or speedy stove option, cooking over a fire can be a nice treat if you’re willing to put in the extra effort. What’s nice is this stove’s pot supports are wide enough for a variety of cookware sizes (we tried it with 1-2L pots and an 8-inch pan).

Of all the stoves I have in my collection that have various forms of piezoelectric ignitions (I have at least 10), the Soto ignition system is far and away the most reliable, most sophisticated, and least obtrusive. No one else in the industry even comes close to the quality and reliability of the Soto Stealth Ignition. As mentioned above, mine has been in some salty conditions and shows no signs whatsoever of any rust or corrosion. Whatever it is made from, I’ve been extremely happy with its construction and it looks like it belongs with some of my higher-priced gear. Does the BRS-3000T have an igniter? At first glance, we had concerns about the scalloped, curvy pot stand lips (which are designed to be compatible with BioLite’s pot and grill cookware). But upon testing, we had no issues balancing off-brand pots as well, even a small 1L pot.Even with a massive pre-heat from the spirit cup of the Trangia adapter I would not use pure paraffin. The picture below shows the way the flame had deteriorated. Not entirely understand why the Windburner was not included in the comparison - it's a bit less pricey and more comparable to the other tested stoves (integrated pot cozy, less of a water-boiling only machine, slightly more efficient), while having the same "impervious to gale force winds" burner like the Reactor :)
